Established in 1765 as the nation s first medical school, the Perelman School of Medicine is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. The School has ranked among the top five medical schools in the United States for the past 17 years, according to U.S. News & World Report s survey of researchoriented medical schools. Penn Medicine continues to provide its students with an innovative, comprehensive curriculum that prepares them to become leading physicians and scientists in a broad array of fields. Penn Medicine s physicians, nurses, and staff provide exceptional, personalized care to patients with a wide range of medical conditions, including cancer, heart and lung disease, neurological disorders, diseases of aging, and orthopaedics, as well as care for newborns. 4 CLINICAL FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS PENN MEDICINE INCLUDES FOUR HOSPITALS AND HUNDREDS OF OUTPATIENT CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE REGION, COMBINING FOR A TOTAL OF 6.7-MILLION SQUARE FEET IN FACILITY SPACE. hospital of the university of pennsylvania (HUP) is annually recognized as one of the nation s best by the US News & World Report in its Honor Roll of best hospitals. The 1.9 million-square-foot complex consists of 16 interconnecting buildings and is a busy inpatient hub for cancer, neurosurgery, cardiology care, and many other specialties. Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) Pennsylvania Hospital is the nation s first hospital, cofounded by Benjamin Franklin in Today its many outstanding clinical programs include the Spine Center, the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, maternity care, and Penn Medicine Washington Square. It is a 1.1 million-square-foot campus spread over 15 buildings. The Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine (PCAM) is a state-of-the-art outpatient facility, with diagnostic and treatment facilities designed to be in close proximity for patient-focused care. The Abramson Cancer Center (ACC) has more than 100,000 outpatient visits each year and more than 23,000 participants enrolled in clinical trials. Since 1973, it has been designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, one of 41 such centers in the nation. Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) is consistently recognized as a center of excellence for cardiac care, ophthalmology, and the Musculoskeletal Center located at the new Penn Medicine University City. Its 617,900-square-foot campus is spread over 10 buildings. Chester County Hospital (CCH), the newest entity of Penn Medicine, includes a 537,520 squarefoot hospital complex in West Chester and satellite locations in Exton, West Goshen, New Garden, Jennersville, and Kennett Square. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center, the largest integrated radiation oncology center in the world, uses beams of protons traveling nearly at light speed to eradicate tumors and spare healthy surrounding tissue, eliminating many side effects of conventional cancer therapies. 5

5 Penn Medicine Rittenhouse includes a rehabilitation facility, a long-term acute-care specialty hospital, and an inpatient hospice. Good Shepherd Penn Partners offers rehabilitation and outpatient care at 29 comprehensive facilities in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, including a specialty hospital at Penn Medicine Rittenhouse. Penn Home Care & Hospice Services offers a full range of home health needs through Penn Wissahickon Hospice, Penn Care at Home, and Penn Home Infusion Therapy. Penn Medicine Community Practices are located in Valley Forge, Radnor, Bucks County, Cherry Hill, and Woodbury Heights. The Clinical Care Associates and Clinical Health Care Associates of New Jersey are networks of primary and specialty care physicians, with more than 50 locations throughout the Philadelphia region. 7 EDUCATION The Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) is at the forefront of medical education with an innovative curriculum and integrated approach to learning, using small groups, case-based and teamfocused training, and advanced technology. Students also have the flexibility to combine their medical education with master s and doctoral degrees, specialty certificates, and global health and community service. 8 PATIENT CARE The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) comprises the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC), Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH), and Chester County Hospital (CCH), as well as an alliance with Good Shepherd Penn Partners, a rehabilitation and long-term acute-care hospital at Penn Medicine Rittenhouse and outpatient physical therapy sites across the region. UPHS also includes Penn Home Care and Hospice Service and many outpatient facilities and service programs. Penn Medicine physicians also work in partnership with their colleagues at The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. Penn Medicine again had the most physicians in the region featured on Philadelphia magazine s Top Docs list. All four Penn Medicine hospitals received the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association s Get With the Guidelines Silver Plus Achievement Award, for the highest standard of stroke care. PPMC again was recognized as one of the top 100 hospitals in the US by Truven Health Analytics. 23 Clinical Care Associates practices received the highest designation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance for providing access to more efficient and better coordinated care. 10 A TRADITION OF GLOBAL AND LOCAL ENGAGEMENT Penn Medicine s programs and projects extend beyond our institution to serve vulnerable populations in our surrounding Philadelphia community and to those in need around the world. Penn faculty are researching diseases, educating students, and treating patients in hospitals and mobile clinics, in partnership with institutions in Botswana, Guatemala, and Peru, and with many other international groups. Our community also comes together to support humanitarian and medical relief efforts across the globe, including aid to Ebolastricken nations in West Africa. In collaboration with the University, Penn Medicine continues the 14-year-old PennBotswana Partnership, with its focus on HIV/AIDS, cervical cancer, heart disease, educating local health care workers, and telemedicine. The GuatemalaPenn Partnership offers students a variety of training opportunities as well. The PennUniversidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia partnership offers students clerkships in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and tropical medicine. 17

11 AIDING THE COMMUNITY FROM WITHIN Improving the health of people living throughout the Philadelphia area is among Penn Medicine s highest priorities. Every day, physicians, nurses, medical students, and staff volunteer their knowledge, skills, and time to benefit residents in our community.
