LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGES 0 TO 3
THE CHILD S EARLY LANGUAGE IS DEVELOPED FACE-TO-FACE
LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 3 Did you know that when your child is born, it has been working on its language for several weeks? it can tell the difference between different language sounds? Did you know that when your child turns 9 months, it is expected to be able to Initiate contact? Associate sounds with things? For instance a telephone ringing Respond to its own name and dad and mom? Mimic other people s sounds and language tones? Express emotions in different ways? For instance by laughing, clapping and pushing away
4 LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY THE EARLY LANGUAGE (0-9 MONTHS) You play an important part in your child s linguistic development Speak with your child Maintain eye contact when speaking with your child Play with your child, for instance peek-a-boo and give and take -games. Sing with your child, use rhymes and nursery rhymes. When your child makes sounds, guess which word your child is trying to say. Then say the word!
LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 5 Help your child express emotions The child laughs and you say: I see that you are happy. Announce the things you are doing with your child I am going to change your diaper I am washing your arm
6 LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY THE CHILD S LANGUAGE FROM 9 MONTHS TO THE AGE OF 3 Pay attention to times, when your child tries to engage in a conversation with you. Take your time in speaking with your child and be curious when you are having a conversation. Talk to your child about the things you do together at home, for instance cooking, and about the things you are experience when you are out, for instance on a walk. Make your child s sounds into language Your child says: Wroom and points to a car. You say: Yes, that is a very cool sports car.
LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 7 Look at the things your child is paying attention to and discuss it You are both looking at a ball. It is a ball you say. Your child says: Ball. You say: Yes, that is a pretty round ball, and look, the ball bounces. Give your child the time and opportunity to repeat some of what you are saying. Answer when your child asks you a question. Speak with your child in your preferred language.
8 LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY Put your thoughts into words rather than just pointing Would you please hand me the cup? Accept your child s way of speaking, but repeat the sentence correctly The child says: Dowy dive car You say: Yes, the dolly is driving her car
LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY 9 PLAY, SING AND READ WITH YOUR CHILD Play and sing with your child. Also use rhymes and nursery rhymes. Look in books together. Read the same books over and over. Talk about things the child does not know of, for instance wild animals, children in other countries and many other things. Use the library. Watch children s TV with your child and discuss what you are watching. Expand your child s sentences The child says: Me bath. You answer Oh, do you want a bath? Language develops when you have conversations
10 LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT A JOINT RESPONSIBILITY INFORMATION You can obtain further information from your health visitor and at your child s daycare. You can also find information and inspiration at the library and at these internet sites:
