Presented from both the clinician s and the survivor s perspective, we hope to help attendees better understand the complex, and often misunderstood, dynamics of being a male survivor and some of the unique challenges and pressures faced by this population. We'll introduce participants to a model for healing and demonstrate some proven techniques to help men heal. Included will be a defining of terms, a focus on myths surrounding male sexual victimization, distinguishing features between male and female survivors, how to effectively assess for abuse, and understanding the clinical dynamics, after-effects, and healing strategies. The workshop will also include information on the extent to which sexual abuse of males occurs and place that information into context. This program will help psychotherapists enhance their work with male survivors in a number of ways. It will elaborate on effective treatment approaches and show what strengths may arise along the healing path. It will also highlight unique challenges to minority men from different lifestyles and cultures, and counter-transference challenges. We will address how to develop effective peer led support groups, and identify the numerous organizations and avenues for support available outside the therapist s office. We will identify what therapists need to know about working with survivors from a survivor s point of view. We will explore effective prevention strategies that can be taught to community members and clients. Lastly, we ll explore the rewards of working in this field, and present a paradigm for thinking about recovery that will leave participants re-energized for the important work they do every day. 7 AFFILIATED TRAINING 2: A Multi-Pronged Approach to Ending Corporal Punishment of Children in the United States: Creating a Non-Violent Future Date/Time: Friday, September 5, :00 AM 12:00 PM/ 1:30 PM 4:30 PM Fees: $95 Early Registration by July 31 $115 by September 1 $125 After September 1 Presenters: Victor I. Vieth, J.D., Executive Director Emeritus, Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center. Deborah Sendek, M.S., Program Manager, Center for Effective Discipline, Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center, Karen Polonko, M.D., Lucien Lombardo, M.D., Stacie LeBlanc, J.D., M.Ed Sponsored by: Gundersen Health System s National Child Protection Training Center (NCPTC) & The Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT) at Alliant International University Level: ALL Abstract: Hundreds of research studies indicate that corporal punishment of children can increase the risk of mental health issues for children into adulthood but most parents and many professionals working with children and families are unaware of these detrimental long-term consequences. In recent studies, thirty percent of parents self-reported hitting their infants who were less than one year of age while as many as seventy percent of US parents admitted to hitting their child in early childhood. Since research clearly documents the negative consequences, what can professionals do to help parents move away from this form of parenting behavior? This interactive presentation and discussion format will highlight the research effects of physical punishment, the challenges to ending the practice of hitting children, implementable strategies to deter hitting children and a professional commitment to protect children from corporal punishment. Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will be able to: List 2 research findings documenting the risks of corporal punishment (CP) to children's physical and mental health Identify 3 strategies to engage faith-based leaders in the discussion to end corporal punishment of children Explain the importance of allied professionals' and community leaders' attitudes toward corporal punishment in shifting norms regarding CP among parents and the general public Discuss how best to engage community leaders, professionals, and policy makers in efforts to shift norms and attitudes regarding CP List 4 resources to implement programs in their work environment that will contribute to the goal of ending corporal punishment of children Continuing Education: Up to 6.0 hours of CE credits for Psychologists, MFTs, Social Workers, Counselors, Attorneys, and Child Custody Evaluators

10 AFFILIATED TRAINING 5: Child Torture as a Form of Child Abuse Abusive Head Trauma 2014: Recent Research & Courtroom Arguments Date/Time: Saturday, September 6, :15 PM 5:30 PM Fees: $75 Early Registration by July 31 $95 by September 1 $105 After September 1 Sponsored by: The Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT) at Alliant International University Level: ALL Part 1: Child Torture as a Form of Child Abuse Presenter: Barbara Knox, MD, Medical Director, University of Wisconsin Child Protection Program Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, University of Wisconsin American Family Children s Hospital Abstract: This presentation describes clinical findings and case characteristics of children who are victims of severe and multiple forms of abuse and proposes clinical criteria that indicate child abuse by torture. Medical records, investigation records, and transcripts of testimony regarding a non-consecutive case series of 28 children with evidence of physical abuse, neglect and psychological abuse such as terrorizing and isolation were reviewed for types of injuries, duration of maltreatment, medical and physical neglect, social and family history, and history of prior Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement. The median age was 7.5 years (9 months to 14.3 years). Thirty-six percent died. Duration of abuse ranged from 3 ½ months to 8 years (median 3 years). Ninety-three percent of children were beaten and exhibited cutaneous injury; 21% had fractures. There were 25 victims of isolation (89%), including 61% who were physically restrained and 89% who were restricted from food or water. All of the children were victims of psychological abuse; 75% were terrorized through threats of harm or death to themselves or loved ones and 54% were degraded and/or rejected by caregivers. Nearly all children were medically neglected. Half had history of prior referrals to CPS. The children in this case series were physically abused, isolated, deprived of basic necessities, terrorized, and neglected. We define child torture as a longitudinal experience characterized by at least two physical assaults or one extended assault, two or more forms of psychological abuse and neglect resulting in prolonged suffering, permanent disfigurement or dysfunction, or death. Objectives: As a result of this training, participants will be able to: Discuss the rationale for a diagnosis of child torture as a form of child abuse and summarize proposed inclusion criteria for this medical diagnosis Define at least 3 system-wide failures and address red-flags which can allow for earlier intervention of tortured children Address 3 needs of the child victims Prescribe intervention needs of child victims Part 2: Abusive Head Trauma 2014: Recent Research & Courtroom Arguments Presenters: Randell Alexander MD PhD, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Florida - Jacksonville Abstract: Abusive head trauma (AHT) is not particularly a difficult or contentious diagnosis in practice, but continues to be argued in court. The history of AHT will be reviewed and current diagnostic methods will be examined. Recent research will be explored which sheds light on the international concurrence with the USA current practices, and adds additional substance to current major medical organization positions. Opposing courtroom arguments will be examined. Objectives: As a result of this training participants will be able to: Recognize the diagnosis of AHT and what other factors that need to be considered in confirming the diagnosis Describe recent research including the cost of care for AHT, its incidence, recidivism, and long term outcomes Articulate the diagnosis and treatment and overcome counter-arguments in court setting List at least 2 counter-arguments sometimes offered in court: one on alternative diagnoses and one on timing Identify at least 3 evidence-based arguments that support shaking as a mechanism for serious or fatal injury Continuing Education: Up to 4.0 hours of CE credits for Psychologists, MFTs, Social Workers, Counselors, Attorneys, and Nurses
