Real-Time Performance Monitoring of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge Yarnold, Moon, Aktan, Glisic IABMAS 2012
TACONY PALMYRA LIVE INFRASTRUCTURE FIELD LABORATORY: TACONY PALMYRA LIVE INFRASTRUCTURE FIELD LABORATORY: Federal State Local Governments, Policy, Regulation, Community, History, Culture, Economy, Brownfields, Delaware River, River Navigation, Tidal Wetland, Urban Estuary, Nature Park, Wildlife, Highways, Bascule Bridge, Bridge Commission, Bridge Staff, Consultants, Contractors
Tacony-Palmyra Bridge Two-leaf rolling-lift-system bascule with shear lock Between Tacony (PA) and Palmyra (NJ), over Delaware River 1929 by Ralph Modjeski 1,115m (3659ft) =168m (550ft) steel tied arch span + 2 x 224m (735ft) half through truss 3-span continuous units, + 79m (260ft) Scherzer, two-leaf rolling-lift-system bascule with shear lock Owned and operated by the Burlington County Bridge Commission (BCBC)
Objectives of Monitoring Owners strategy is to indefinitely preserve the historic bridge since replacement or even renewal is not politically feasible! Long-term goal is a real-time multi-scale multi-modal SCADA system: Bascule operations (safe opening and closing of the bascule) Structural performance (levels of strain, deformation, forces, etc.) Traffic safety (weather conditions, icing of the road, congestion, etc.) Security and Enforcement (weight, size, speed, toll, site security) Inspections and Maintenance Management (inspection planning, directions) Education reform Project-Based Learning at Live Infrastructure Labs The SCADA system includes: Dynamic and static strain sensors (resistive and vibrating wire strain gauges) Displacement transducers, tilt-meters, accelerometers Weather station, structural temperature sensors, air and water quality Courtesy sensors of Video surveillance Drexel University The software package for data acquisition/management is a critical element
Bascule Span Opening Mechanical System Force Couple 5 Bascule Opening
Bascule Instrumentation - Preliminary Preliminary Instrumentation: 22 electrical resistance strain gages 4 vibrating wire strain gages 2 Tilt Sensors (with temperature) Weather Station Truss B Upper Chord Strain Gages Truss AL Lower Chord Strain Gages (EF) DAQ Setup using National Instruments Compact RIO Tiltmeter Truss B Lower Chord Strain Gages (EF) 6
Title of Overall Presentation Typical Lower Chord Opening Response Tacony-Palmyra Bridge S Stage d STRAIN High Speed Strain Gage Results During g Opening p g ((Lower Bridge Chord) d c Stages of Bridge Opening a Bridge in closed position (no traffic) b Bridge release (cantilever condition) c Bridge in open position (~53 degrees) d Bridge in fully open position (~67 degrees) e Bridge back in cantilever condition (prior to close) a f Bridge in closed position (prior to traffic) 7 b EVENTS e f
Challenges Integration of static and dynamic multi-parameter data resulting from structural and environmental monitoring and their synchronization with camera images lead to several important tquestions: 1) How live data could be visualized in a clear, concise, yet comprehensive manner? 2) How can we access and visualize historic data? 3) How various stakeholders and end users influence visualization and accessibility to the data?
Visualization software package System Control (configuration of system, alarming, self monitoring, meta data) Data Management (easy access and meaningful visualization of fht heterogeneous data dt and alarms) Live Portal Software (visualization of live data) Playback Software (visualization of historic data)
Main system software
Live portal: panoramic camera page
Live portal: bridge graphic view / live
Live portal: bridge graphic view / trend
Live portal: bascule/engineer view
Playback software: static tab
Playback software: dynamic tab
Conclusions A properly designed data management scheme is critical for the success of Operational and Structural Performance and Health Monitoring Handling different inputs from various sensors (e.g. strain, temperature, acceleration, corrosion indicators, weather parameters, photographs or video streams) Easy real time and on-demand access to data and visualization in various formats Interpretation and analysis support The software package should be user friendly and intuitive Poor data management frequently leads to failure of monitoring
