2 About CUNY The nation's largest urban public university with 23 institutions: eleven senior colleges, six community colleges, the William E. Macaulay Honors College, the Graduate School and University Center, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, the CUNY School of Law at Queens College, the CUNY School of Professional Studies and the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. More than 226,000 degree-credit students and 230,000 adult, continuing and professional education students. Approximately 1,400 academic programs, more than 200 majors leading to associate and baccalaureate degrees, and more than 100 graduate degree majors. More than 80 percent of CUNY's senior college faculty hold Ph.D.s or other highest h degrees in their fields.

5 Why ASAP? CUNY ASAP is designed to provide New York City with the educated d workforce that it must have in order to stay competitive with cities around the world. -- Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg ASAP is designed to enhance a student s ability to graduate in a timely manner with the skills that are required in today s competitive marketplace -- Chancellor Matthew Goldstein

6 Where did it come from? The ASAP program was developed as part of Mayor Bloomberg s Commission for Economic Opportunity Agenda. It seeks to create a new model for the education and advancement of highly motivated community college students and working adults who are prepared to complete a college degree. Each of the six CUNY community colleges will admit qualified students who are expected to graduate with an Associate s degree in a promising field in no more than three years.

7 Who is Eligible? Students who are willing and able to commit to a full-time schedule of college courses (12 credits or more a semester) starting in September 2007, and to participate in a comprehensive summer program this summer. New York City residents Students t who meet the CUNY standards d for competence in Reading, Writing and Mathematics ti by Fall 2007.

10 The ASAP Experience Each CUNY community college will offer a 2007 pre-college summer program to orient students to ASAP, introduce them to faculty and advisors, and provide any necessary remediation. Full-time college study will begin in September Each college will offer several different programs of study in block schedules so that students can attend all their classes in a defined d period of time that t coordinates most conveniently with their work and other responsibilities.

11 Financial Benefits to ASAP Students Students eligible for federal and/or state financial aid will receive additional ASAP funding to pay the balance of tuition and school fees. All ASAP students will be provided with their textbooks. Students receiving gpublic assistance, may be eligible for additional benefits. Hours spent in class and at ASAP activities may satisfy a significant ifi portion of weekly work activity it requirements. Expenses such as child care and travel fare may be reimbursed

12 Learning Communities ASAP students will become members of a cohort of no more than twenty-five other students who share the same academic program. Classes will be taught by only full time faculty Each college will provide a range of scheduling options designed in a convenient morning, afternoon, evening, or weekend block of time

13 ASAP at LAGCC All First Year Students at LaGuardia participate in the Common Reading Program. During the ASAP Summer Institute students will start to work on the Common Reading for 2007: An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore. ASAP students will start to develop their e- Portfolio during the Summer Institute. It is a web based system that offers students multiple ways to showcase their work, enhance their education and develop essential skills for college work and future career goals.
