Interoperability architecture for electric mobility Allard Brand 1, Maria-Eugenia Iacob 2, Marten J. van Sinderen 2 1 Energie Data Services Nederland, 2 University of Twente 6th International IFIP Working Conference on Enterprise Interoperability (IWEI 2015)

Agenda 1. Context Provisioning electricity Electric mobility 2. Problem 3. Objectives 4. Approach 5. Contribution 6. Conclusions

Context The electricity system is subject to change Commitment of European Union to reduce CO2 emissions Transition to renewable energy sources Growing interest in electric mobility These developments impose threats for the (current) electricity system At the same time, electric mobility provides opportunities to facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources In order to mitigate the identified threats and to take advantage of the identified opportunities, further integration between involved parties from the markets of electric mobility and the electricity system is needed

Provisioning Electricity Overview of the current model Two inter-related movements Flow of energy Increasing electricity generated from renewable energy sources Decentralization of electricity generation

Provisioning Electricity Main challenge: renewable energy sources and distributed generation are generally unpredictable and introduce fluctuation in supply, potentially inducing imbalance in the electricity system

Grid pays 6m to turn off wind farm turbines Wind farm operators in Scotland have been paid nearly 6 million over the past 33 days not to generate electricity Source: The Herald, Scotland, May 2013

Electric mobility Overview of the current model Threat: significant impact on residential low-voltage networks Potential opportunity: accomodate the adoption of renewable energy sources by taking advantage of the ability to temporarily adjust demand shifting demand away from (household) peaks supply energy back into the electricity system during peaks in demand

Electric mobility Overview of the current model Threat: significant impact on residential low-voltage networks Potential opportunity: accomodate the adoption of renewable energy sources by taking advantage of the ability to temporarily adjust demand Significant source of flexibility shifting demand away from (household) peaks supply energy back into the electricity system during peaks in demand

Problem The current architecture for electric mobility provides insufficient integration with the electricity system, since at this moment there is no possibility for influencing the charge process based on information from market parties such as the distribution system operator. Charging can neither be influenced by grid constraints nor by the amount of (renewable) energy supply available. In order to mitigate the identified threats and to take advantage of the identified opportunities, further integration between involved parties from the markets of electric mobility and the electricity system is needed

Objectives The main goal of this research is to define a reference architecture for electric mobility with the purpose of facilitating interoperability between involved parties from the markets of electric mobility and the electricity system Objectives: To facilitate the integration of the electricity system and electric mobility To accomodate the adoption of renewable energy sources To improve the business case for charging infrastructure

Approach Open standards TOGAF ArchiMate 1 Current architecture 2 Reference architecture 1 2 TOGAF ADM and ArchiMate (Iacob, Jonkers, Quartel, Franken, & Van den Berg, 2012)

Contribution Interoperability architecture Based on the concept of smart charging A method of charging electric vehicles optimized to the available grid capacity and/or fluctuations in the supply of (sustainable) energy (Movares, 2013) "The main idea of smart charging is that by taking control of the charging process, the use of the grid and available energy can be optimized to minimize additional investments and facilitate the integration and storage of renewable energy (CEN, CENELEC & ETSI, 2012)

Smart charging Controlled charging Demand-response charging Flexibility operator gathering flexibilities; adapted from (CEN, CENELEC & ETSI, 2012) Aggregator (role) Control signals Top-down approach Software agent (EMS) Price signals Bottom-up approach

Design choices 1. Allow various energy suppliers to deliver energy at charging station customer can choose 2. No separate meters for electricity and charging - certified meters and shared metering data

Reference architecture

Migration path Migration architecture Reference architecture

Migration path Migration architecture Reference architecture

Validation - Business case for public charging infra less clear - Different opinion on implementation of price incentives - Controlled charging more feasible in short term Business model improvement ES/EM integration - Reduce impact of e-mobility - Better utilization by smart charging - Less replacement of electricity cables - Drives adoption of renewable energy - Smart charging is more effective than storages (less loss) Accomodating RES adoption

Conclusions 1. Electric mobility offers opportunities that are not utilized in the current situation 2. There is a need for interoperability 3. The reference and migration architecture provide a template solution to do so and can help to achieve Integration of the electricity system and electric mobility Accomodating the adoption of renewable energy sources Improving the business case for charging infrastructure

Further work Limitations High level of abstraction Number of experts for validation Further work Implications of inductive charging Business case development
