2 Letter from an Algonquin student Dear future classmates: Congratulations on your acceptance to Algonquin College. There are so many great things in store for you! I wish to tell you a little about myself and my experiences at Algonquin College to give you some idea of why I chose this school and a little sample of what you can look forward to. A career in business really interested me but I was uncertain as to which form accounting, marketing, international, managerial, etc. Having no experience in any of these fields I didn t know which one was the best fit for me. After looking at all the options I finally chose to attend Algonquin because, not only does this school have a great reputation, but this was the one place where I didn t have to choose which area I wanted to specialize in right away. In the business administration program you spend three semesters taking classes from all the different areas before you select your major. The flexibility to try out many areas before focusing on one really appealed to me and was the deciding factor in where to attend. My first semester has been going very well I am really enjoying the whole experience. The key that works for me is to attend classes regularly and stay on top of assignments. While I may learn many things from my textbook, I have learned so much more from my professors who are always giving extra hints and helpful advice in class. My final piece of advice is simply put yourself out there. I didn t really know anyone when I first started attending classes and it would be very easy to stay isolated. Not living on campus, I knew that it would be a very lonely road if I didn t try to make some connections. I deliberately made eye contact and offered a smile to as many classmates as I could. Using this approach, within the first two weeks I befriended many new people and formed a study group with like-minded students. I have gone from being a single student walking down the halls to being part of a vibrant community. Before you know it your first semester will be over and done. I hope you enjoy your time at Algonquin College as much as I have. Dive in, take part, have fun and stay focussed. Your fellow student, Khrista 32

7 Across the World Algonquin thinks global In September 2013, the doors opened on Algonquin s new campus in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, expanding on a set of existing international partnerships based in China, India, Montenegro and Kuwait. Today, international education is a significant contributor to Algonquin s activities, playing an important role in the future of the college and contributing increasingly to the employability of our students. 8 OTTAWA CAMPUS I have to say they have some pretty awesome teachers at Algonquin. Liz, student A college campus should be designed around student needs. It should include the facilities and services from public busing to affordable, healthy food that make student life efficient, worry-free, and productive. That s why the Ottawa campus of Algonquin accommodates a diverse range of requirements. A college campus should be set up to encourage discussion, with students enriching each other s experience, providing friendship, support and offering a special way to learn. 22 ALGONQUIN CENTRE FOR CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE At the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence, our goal is to educate and inspire. An education to build on The goal of the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) is to inspire and educate. It s a unique intersection where students, professors and the public can gather, encouraging public/college interaction and private use by students and faculty. The ACCE is a focal point for the entire construction trade and design industry as well as its associations. Bringing together students, professors, and researchers, with local builders and tradespeople creates synergies, increases industry awareness, and produces highly-skilled graduates familiar with the collaboration requirements of today s construction and design sectors. Having the ability to move from the second-year Construction Engineering Technician program directly into the third-year of the Civil Engineering Technology program allows me to further my education while focusing on an area of study that genuinely interests me. If ever a building represented the ambitions of its inhabitants, it s the ACCE, a 190,000-square foot (17,600 m 2 ), uniquely green and architecturally iconic learning centre that s home to the Construction Trades and Building Systems department, and the Architecture, Civil and Building Science department. You re going to learn just as much from the student sitting beside you, your colleague, as the industry expert in front of you. Eric Marois, Academic Chair, Architecture, Civil and Building Science Diamond, student 22 algonquinconnected.com/acce

23 By 2020, 50% of Canada s current skilled workforce will retire, creating severe shortages in every trade. Team Ontario: Algonquin College, Queen s University, and Carleton University successfully competed in the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition with their multiple, award-winning functional and livable starter house that strikes a balance between engineering and architecture and sets a higher standard of sustainable housing. Transportable themes The themes in all our programs are transportable across the world sustainability, green building practices, certainly the inter-professional education piece where you re not only learning about your chosen career, you re learning about the related field as well, says Eric Marois, Academic Chair, Architecture, Civil and Building Science. SEE OUR PROGRAMS PAGE 47 Theoretical and practical knowledge The need for skilled tradespersons is greater than ever and career opportunities are plentiful. Trades careers today demand a high level of both theoretical and practical knowledge. With the latest technologies, exclusive facilities, experienced instructors, and apprenticeship training, the programs found in the ACCE prepare you for success, giving you an education to build on. First-hand learning The ACCE not only helps to address the skills shortage in the construction industry, it is a showcase for green construction and training in Eastern Ontario. The building represents a great opportunity for students to learn first-hand about the construction of a leading-edge green facility. The ACCE confirms Algonquin s drive to become the leader in construction programs and skills training. The programs in the ACCE range from traditional construction trades to the latest innovations in building science and sustainable building and design practices. Helping our graduates to ladder into progressive programs, including advanced diplomas and degree programs, provides many options for continuing their studies and taking the best advantage of all that the ACCE offers.
