COURSE DESCRIPTION New Directions for Understanding Whiplash- Have We Been Driving in the Wrong Lane? It is necessary to gain an insight into the mechanisms underlying the pain, physical and psychological impairments for the differential diagnosis and appropriate management of a patient s neck pain and disability following whiplash injury. This course will present the research findings from the Neuromuscular Imaging Research Laboratory at Northwestern University, Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences and the new directions that are emanating from recent and ongoing basic science and clinical research efforts. This research is looking into the assessment, accurate sub-group classification and management of patients with neck pain; key areas being the mechanistic basis for pain, physical and psychological impairment in the musculoskeletal system in cases of traumatic whiplash. Several measurements have been developed towards quantifying/classifying impairments in the pain,

3 sensory-motor, postural control and sympathetic nervous systems as well as psychosocial features of neck-related disorders. The course will also explore innovative management options for mediating the expression of pain in both whiplash and other common neuromusculoskeletal conditions. COURSE DESCRIPTION Evidence-Based Solutions for Improving Cervical Spine Health and Function This two day course will provide participants with the latest multidisciplinary research into cervical spine disorders emanating from a distinguished international panel of basic science and clinician researchers. The emphasis in this course is placed on the application of translational research to leading edge clinical practice. The format will consist of lectures, panel discussions and question and answer. Specific topics include subgrouping patients with neck pain, measuring the experience of pain, and psychosocial factors, exercise prescription and medical management in neck pain. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Physiatrists, Orthopedic/Neurological Surgeons, Family Practice/Internists, Emergency Medicine Physicians, Physician Assistants, Residents, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Athletic Trainers, Nurses, Chiropractors, and individuals treating or researching cervical spine pain. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the New Directions for Understanding Whiplash course, participants will be able to: Provide an overview of soft tissue injury associated with whiplash-associated disorder Characterize the primary prognostic and diagnostic factors related to Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) Identify the primary clinical and radiographic findings that determine best management decisions for WAD Integrate current best evidence into effective assessment, sub-group classification and management of the patient with acute and chronic WAD as well as other frequently encountered neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Upon completion of the Evidence-Based Solutions for Improving Cervical Spine Health and Function course, participants will be able to: Discuss the relevant biomechanics of the cervical spine in injury prevention and mechanisms underlying the genesis and maintenance of pain. Review risk factors that could influence the maintenance and recurrence of neck pain. Devise an informed assessment, characterization and subsequent management strategy for the patient with neck pain. Integrate the influence of health care services and the economic impact of multidisciplinary

4 services for the patient with neck pain. Discuss the influence of subgrouping in the patient with cervical spine and upper limb pathology. Review patient education and counseling schemas for the patient with neck spine pain.
