5 What is the National Register? The nation s official list of places worthy of preservation. Administered by the National Park Service. HONORARY, not protective

6 Why a National Register listing? Raises awareness of and pride in your historic place Access to the Federal Rehab tax credit Some protection for your community character only IF federal funds will be used No additional reviews for property owners beyond usual local permit processes

9 State Register of Historic Sites This is the State Historical Marker Program. These markers are honorary designations.

10 Why a State Historical Marker? Markers can: Raise awareness and pride Educate Encourage heritage tourism Encourage historic preservation Bring community together at their dedication ceremony

11 What is a Local Historic District? Historically significant area protected by local ordinance Way to manage change

Way to manage change/ neighborhood insurance Protect property values Designation can encourage reinvestment and revitalization CLG program Economic benefits of protecting your sense of place (tourism, rehab dollars in your community) Protecting sense of place also protects quality of life

13 National Register Criteria Used for all the designations Once you understand your place s historic context, you can apply it to any of the three kinds of designations. Age Integrity Significance (4 criteria possible)

14 Age At least 50 years old, as a rule Some places, however, do achieve significance before they re 50.

21 Summary Create your significance statement for your historic place to which historic context or theme does your place belong? is it significant for any of its associations or architecture or craftsmanship or as part of a district? Does your place have enough integrity to help convey the significance? Which designation will you seek?
