Many of our Adult Education Programs prepare students for nationally recognized certificate exams in a variety of fields and trades. Local employers acknowledge and appreciate the rigorous training received in a Nassau BOCES program which helps when applying for jobs. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Adult Education Job Training reserves the right to change locations, times, or dates, where necessary, or to cancel classes. Purchase Order: Organizations enrolling staff for training can be invoiced if a purchase order number is provided. General Admission Guidelines Courses are taught in English. Students must be able to read, write and follow directions at a 9th grade or above level and possess strong math skills. Once employed, all trade students may be subject to background checks and drug screening. For union apprenticeships, students must possess a high school diploma or HSE. Students must possess the ability to problem solve, measure, calculate, analyze, set priorities and choose appropriate instruments. For many classes, students are required to perform fine and gross motor skills including, but not limited to: small muscle control, manual dexterity, lifting, pushing and pulling (100 lbs.), standing in one place for long periods of time, bending and stretching. Students must also possess eye/hand coordination and spatial abilities. Students must be able to have full use of senses: vision, hearing, touch and smell; normal or device corrected. Students also must be able to distinguish color and shape. 4 Adult Education Job Training Series Certificate Programs All Adult Education Job Training classes provide students with a certificate at the end of each class. Additionally, many of our programs offer students a Certificate of Series Completion for the hours they accumulated over many courses. Those programs offering Certificates of Series Completion are listed below and can be found in the respective area of the catalog: Auto Collision, Auto Customizing, Auto Mechanics Heating Systems Service Technician Plumbing Refrigeration and Air Conditioning/EPA Certified Technician Trade Electricity Introduction to Commercial Cooking and Baking Medical Assistant/Medical Secretary Medical Coding and Billing Specialist Pet Grooming Veterinary Assistant The steps to obtain an Adult Education Job Training Certificate of Series Completion are as follows: 1. Register and attend all classes within the sequence required for the Certificate of Series Completion. 2. Maintain an 80% attendance rate in all courses in the sequence. 3. Maintain a 74% or higher average in all courses in the sequence. 4. Payment made in full for all courses. 5. Submit an Application for a Certificate. Certificates of Series Completion will be mailed unless we are notified beforehand that you would like to pick it up. There is a $10 fee for duplicate copies of certificates. Certificate of Series Completion State and National Certification Programs Through our industry partners and accrediting agencies, many of our programs not only provide students with the completion hours and training to find a career, but also prepare students for state and national certification and/or licensing exams. After completion of a course or sequence of courses, students may opt to register for these exams. Adult Education Job Training is a TESTING SITE for the following State and National Certifications: Certified Health Professionals (CHP) These exams are offered at the end of each class with an additional fee paid directly to CHP. See course descriptions for more detail. EKG Medical Assistant Medical Billing and Coding Phlebotomy Technician Prometrics Upon successful completion of Certified Nursing Assistant class, students are eligible to take the exam through Prometrics. An additional fee is paid to Prometrics. See course description for more details. United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Upon successful completion of specific courses, EPA exam is administered on-site. Adult Education Job Training prepares students for State and National certification in the following: New York State Licensing Department Upon successful completion of course, students may apply to New York State to sit for the NYS licensing exam in each of these areas: Cosmetology Barbering American Council of Exercise (ACE) Upon successful completion of course, students can opt to contact the ACE and register for the Certified Personal Trainer exam on an individual basis. American Welding Society (AWS) Upon successful completion of specific courses, students are eligible to contact an AWS site to register for the certification exam. See course description for more details. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE Certified)Upon successful completion of specific courses, students are one step closer to obtaining certification from the ASE. As soon as the decision to close the agency is made, it s posted on the homepage at Sign up for emergency closing s by joining the Nassau BOCES emergency announcement list and be the first to know about emergency closings. Parking Policy All vehicles MUST park in designated regular parking areas. NO cars may park in designated fire zones, along the building curb line, reserved or administrators parking, or handicapped parking without a valid handicapped sticker displayed. Student Attendance Practices Students should make every attempt to be present for each scheduled class to keep current with the lessons and assignments. Students should be on time. In order to avoid failure, an 80% attendance rate must be maintained. Students who fail the class due to absenteeism will not receive a refund. Student Grading Practices A final grade may consist of quizzes, tests, a final exam and the demonstration of practical hands-oncompetencies as determined by the instructor. The lowest passing grade for any class is 74. A failing grade will be designated to students who have not demonstrated competency in the subject matter or who have less than an 80% attendance rate. Students will be made aware of their progress on a consistent basis by the instructor. Refund/Transfer Rules REFUND REQUESTS MUST BE IN WRITING AT LEAST FIVE BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO THE FIRST CLASS MEETING The date of withdrawal is the date/time your written request is received at the Adult Evening Office. It can be ed to org or faxed directly to us at (516) REQUESTS RECEIVED AT LEAST FIVE BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO THE FIRST CLASS MEETING $75 withdrawal fee. REQUESTS RECEIVED LESS THAN FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS MEETING 80% of paid tuition refunded, less a $75 processing fee. REQUESTS RECEIVED AFTER THE FIRST CLASS MEETING 50% of paid tuition refunded, less a $75 processing fee. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER THE SECOND CLASS MEETING. A REQUEST FOR TRANSFER between classes, semesters, or individuals received after the first class will not be honored and will be subject to the terms of the refund policy. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO NOTE: Cost of books is non-refundable. All refunds take up to 6-8 weeks to process. In the event a student is terminated from the program there will be no refund. No personal checks. No company checks unless a registered vendor. Damage to or Loss of Personal Property Nassau BOCES assumes no responsibility, either real or implied, for the personal property of any adult student. Students should review their own insurance coverage regarding personal property liability. Issues Under Dispute Nassau BOCES has an appeal and grievance policy for issues under dispute. A copy can be obtained from the Adult Evening Office or at Smoking Policy Nassau BOCES is a non-smoking facility. 6 Frequently Asked Questions about Adult Education Job Training Courses For those with a busy schedule, our part-time courses for adults are the perfect choice. Classes usually meet twice a week on alternate days (Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs) and from three to four hours per evening. Some licensing or certification courses meet more frequently. Do I need a high school diploma? All students must be at least 18 years of age. A high school diploma or HSE is required for all of our health occupation courses. A high school diploma is not required for other courses. Nassau BOCES Adult Education also offers tuition-free ways to obtain a high school general equivalency diploma. Call (516) for more information. Can I obtain a license or certificate? All of our courses lead to a Adult Education Job Training Certificate after the certificate requirements are met. Additionally, many of our program certificates prepare the student to sit for optional nationally-recognized certification exams. After every course is completed, a report card will be mailed to the student s home. Does the Adult Education Job Training Program partner with state and local agencies? The Adult Education Job Training Program partners with state and local agencies to provide career education and training for adult learners, including: New York State Department of Labor, Department of Veterans Affairs, Workforce Investment Boards (Hempstead Works, Town of Oyster Bay/North Hempstead), Long Island Forum for Technology/Connect LI, ACCES, unions, employers, schools, libraries, colleges and technical schools, community-based organizations, county government, and business councils. How do I register for courses? See page i of the catalog for registration information. Does Adult Education Job Training offer financial aid or tuition assistance? Adult Education Job Training does not provide financial aid or tuition assistance for our adult students. However, grant funds and tuition vouchers obtained by the student from corporations, agencies, and other funding sources are usually acceptable forms of payment. Adult Education Job Training is a certified educational facility with the New York State Department of Labor (for more information call the local NYS office) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at (888) , which may provide tuition reimbursement. Nassau BOCES Career Support Services provides individuals with disabilities and out-of-school youth with tuition-free training and support. Call (516) for more information. Are there any additional fees or costs? Some of our courses have an additional cost for textbooks. In limited instances, students are required to purchase personal protective equipment or personal tools. Check the course description to see if there are any additional costs or requirements. Classes that end in an exam from one of our industry partners may require additional test fees. How can I obtain an official transcript? Students may request an official transcript of their grades by submitting a completed Request for Transcript form and a money order for $10 payable to Nassau BOCES. 7 Adult Education Job Training Appearance Enhancement IMPORTANT INFORMATION for Licensing & Certification Courses in Cosmetology: Students must posses strong fine and gross motor skills; finger dexterity; and be able to stand, bend and stretch for extended periods of time. Students must have good oral and written communication skills and effective listening and interpersonal skills. Payment plans are available for these courses. For more information on any of our Appearance Enhancement courses, please call (516) Barbering Licensing This course is a combination of classroom and laboratory instruction that will develop the professional knowledge and skills for the barbering license. The course emphasizes training in safety, sanitation, shaving, hair cutting, reception, and sales. September 9 (6 10 p.m.) Monday through Thursday 125 Sessions/500 Hours $4,500 Cosmetology New York State Licensing Students will learn hair design, nail artistry, skin care, and basic men s hair cutting in our modern salons in a relaxed and friendly environment. After successful completion of the 1000-hour course, students may take the Cosmetology New York State Licensing Exam. Classes meet Monday through Thursday evenings from 6 10 p.m. Monthly payment plans are available. Required additional costs: Textbook, cosmetology kit, and mannequin. September 9 (6 10 p.m.) Monday through Thursday 250 Sessions/1,000 Hours $8,500 For Students Needing Additional Hours This course allows students who have completed hours in another approved program to complete their hours at and prepare for the Cosmetology State Board written and practical exams. 8 Automotive Technology Auto Collision Certificate of Series Completion Required Courses: Auto Collision I Auto Collision ii Total Hours: 120 Auto Collision I This course covers the use of body hammers, dollies, body files, grinders, and related power equipment; the mixing and application of body fillers and putties; proper preparation and repair of metal damage; and the use of primers, sealers, and refinishing procedures. Students will be introduced to oxyacetylene and metal inert gas welding for sheet metal repair. September 21 (7 10 p.m.) 20 Sessions/60 Hours $900 Auto Collision ii This course expands upon the principles introduced in Auto Collision I. It includes restoring corrosion and collision repair, expanded general welding techniques, cost estimating, urethane bumper repair, use of spray equipment, and paint finishing procedures. Prerequisite: Auto Collision I 16W202 January 14 (7 10 p.m.) 20 Sessions/60 Hours $900 Auto Customizing Certificate of Series Completion Required Courses: Auto Collision I, Auto Collision ii Auto Customizing-Fundamentals Automotive Painting 101 Total Hours: 210 Note: The requirement for Auto Collision I & II may be substituted with 2 years of documented work experience in the Auto Collision industry. The following courses are being offered at Autoseum, 100 County Seat Drive, Mineola, NY The instructor for these courses is one of the country s most experienced auto fabricators known for his work in the television and film industries. Auto Customizing Fundamentals This course provides an introductory experience for working with metals, fiberglass, and rubber for building molds to reproduce auto parts such as grills, spoilers, and scoops. Students will have the opportunity for artistry and one-offs and be introduced to the vacuum forming machine. Auto collision specialists will benefit from learning enhanced skill sets and be prepared for entry-level work in shops using current customization techniques. Tuition includes all tools and materials for instruction. Students may want to bring in additional materials or tools for personal custom work. Course held at: Autoseum, 100 County Seat Drive, Mineola, NY Prerequisites: Auto Collision I and II. Two years of validated and approved Auto Collision experience may be substituted for the prerequisite. September 21 (7 10 p.m.) Autoseum, Mineola 20 Sessions/60 Hours $990 Automotive Painting 101 This course focuses on the basics of how to paint a vehicle. Training will involve hands-on experience that will touch on all aspects of proper application of water-based paints. Topics include prepping for paint, masking, sanding, priming, color matching, mixing paint, blending, etc. Tuition includes all tools and materials for instruction. Student may want to bring in additional materials or tools for personal work. Course held at: Autoseum, 100 County Seat Drive, Mineola, NY Prerequisite: None September 29 (7 10 p.m.) Autoseum, Mineola 10 Sessions/30 Hours $640 Classic Car Restoration 101 This course focuses on the restoration of classic cars and trucks. Training will involve hands-on experience that will touch on many aspects of restoring the body of a classic vehicle (student s or ours) back to its former glory. Students will be taught by highly qualified instructors with national reputations in classic car restoration. This course may lead to a career or expand student s professional skill set and is also geared to the hobbyist who just wants to do it himself/herself. Topics include: Dismantling of car, inventorying parts, assessing the level of restoration needed, determining what parts are needed, preparing rust for repair, proper tools and safety, making patch panels, using a metal brake, and English wheel and mig welder. 9 Automotive Technology Classic Car Restoration 102 This course focuses on expanding the skills learned in Classic Car Restoration 101. Working with the highly qualified instructors from 101, students will continue their hands-on training in more advanced repair and restoration situations In Partnership with Autoseum! such as full quarter replacement, door skin replacement, structural rust repair, floor and trunk pan replacement, and multi-level rust repair. Tuition includes all tools and materials for instruction. Student may want to bring in additional materials or tools for personal custom work. Auto Mechanics Certificate of Series Completion Required Courses: Auto Mechanics I, Auto Mechanics ii Auto Mechanics Engine Performance, Auto Mechanics Auto Electrical/Electronic Systems Auto Mechanics Automotive Alternative Fuels Technology Total Hours: 288 Register for the ASE exam directly with the ASE online at For more information, call Auto Mechanics ii Steering and Brakes This course is a continuation of Auto Mechanics I and covers complete hydraulic brake systems, including master and wheel cylinders, disc-brake calipers, vacuum boosters, and the refinishing of drum and disc brakes. Power and manual steering systems (including rack and pinion), suspension parts and front end alignment are also covered. Textbook from Auto Mechanics I will be required. Students will learn tune-ups and basic engine performance checks, and tire and fluid service and repair. Students are introduced to suspension systems, braking systems, and basic automotive electrical systems, as well as the internal combustion engine and hybrid technology. Students are assessed using Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) style questions in preparation for future ASE exams. Tuition includes cost of textbook. Prerequisite: None 15T102S September 21 (3 6 p.m.) 15T101S September 21 (5 8 p.m.) September 21 (7 10 p.m.) 20 Sessions/60 Hours $890 Auto Mechanics Engine Performance This course is both hands-on and theoretical in its approach to engine tuning and driveability problems. Topics covered include ignition systems, carburetors, fuel injection, computer control systems, and emissions systems. Based on the knowledge learned at the beginning of the course, the instructor will teach more advanced skills such as port fuel injections, C31 computer-controlled coil ignition, GMTBI and PFI advanced diagnosis, EFI on-board computer systems diagnosis, OBD II diagnosis, fuel injection, and microprocessor control unit (MCU). 10 Automotive Technology Auto Mechanics Auto Electrical/Electronic Systems Today s automotive technicians must be familiar with electrical and electronic theory, diagnostics, and repair. Learn about shorts, open circuitry, voltage drops, and grounding AC-DC signals. Study battery service, starting, charging and lighting systems, as well as on-board computers, sensors, instruments, and accessories. Advanced hybrid technology is also covered. Learn how air conditioning, dash units, memory seats, and mirrors are controlled. Textbook from Auto Mechanics I will be required. Required additional cost: Students should have their own multimeter for this course. Prerequisites: Auto Mechanics I and II 16W402 January 14 (7 10 p.m.) 20 Sessions/60 Hours $760 Auto Mechanics Automotive Alternative Fuels Technology Millions of light- and heavy-duty alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles are used by state and federal agencies, private companies, and consumers. Alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles come in a variety of makes and models and run on a number of different fuels. This course is designed to familiarize students with the various types of alternate fuels in use today. Tuition includes cost of textbook. Topics include how to start your own business and stay in business, planning ahead, cash management, dos and don ts of selling goods and services, getting help when needed, and how to determine proper pricing. Before starting your business, be prepared by learning all that is necessary in this venture.
