IMPORTANT - GUARANTEE AND INSTRUCTION This Replacement Unit will give you maximum service when properly installed. Regulators are guaranteed for ninetv days against defective workmanship and materials. Regulators are bench tested and set for correct charging rate according to original factory specifications. DO NOT TAMPER WITH ADJUSTMENTS. The fact that you are replacing the old regulator indicates the possibility that some trouble may exist in the electrical system that caused the old regulator to fail. To avoid damaging the replacement regulator follow these instructions carefully. Fig. I Fig. I1 Fig. 111 f AUTOLITE DELCO-REMY I FORD I AUTOLITE DELCO-REMY FORD I BEFORE INSTALLING DO NOT REMOVE OLD REGULATOR UNTIL THESE TESTS HAVE BEEN MADE IF BATTERY IS LOW AND CHARGING RATE LOW OR NO CHARGE AT ALL MAKE THESE TESTS. 1. check battery water and general battery conditions to see if will take and hold a charge. Check each cell with volt meter. 2. Check wiring for damage. Make sure all wiring connections at t- generator, regulator and battery are tlght and free from corrosion. 3. Check fan belt for slippage. 4. Run motor at medium speed, using a wire to touch one end to regulator base and other end to a good ground. If this corrects trouble, make certain regulator base is well grounded. 5. If the above does not correct the trouble make this test: Fig. 1 AUTOLiTE, DELCO-REMY AND SOME FORD TRACTOR REGU- LATORS use an "A" or STANDARD circuit generator. The qenerator field is traced from the generator armature through the generator field co~ls and then through the requlator to ground at the requlator base. F1q. I1 FORD REGULATORS (except some tractors) AND SOME SPECIAL AU'TOLITE AND DELCO-REMY use a "B" circuit generator. The generator field circuit is traced from the generator armature through the regulator, then through the generator fields to the ground inside of the generator. Fig. I11. If the fault is not corrected, connect one of a wlre to the ARM terminal and the other end to the BAT terminal with motor running at medium speed. If charging rate increases, replace the requlator. 7. If the above tests do not indicate a faulty regulator you probably have a defective battery or - Loose or dirty connections at the generator, regulator, starter switch, battery or ground straps. Faulty generator, bad brushes, weak brush pressure, open or shorted windings. IF BATTERY IS OVERCHARGED AND CHARGING RATE REMAINS HIGH. MAKE THESE TESTS 1. Make sure the regulator base is well grounded to car. 2. With motor running at medium speed disconnect FLD terminal of regulator. If charging rate reduces, replace the requlator. 3. If the charging rate remains high the generator field is shorted at the generator or in the wires to the regulator. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ck application with catalog for proper regulator. Each 3. 30 The Importance of Reprinted from and with permission of AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE DIGEST MAGAZINE, August, 1953 BATTERY and GENERATOR POLARITY Explaining why generators must be correctly polarized, before starting the engine, whenever repairs are made on electrical units T HE automotive electrical system actually contains two generators. One is a chemical device that produces voltage and current by chemical action and is called a storage battery. The other is a mechanical device which produces voltage and current when conductors arc forced to rotate through a magnetic field (Fig. 1 ). In normal operation these two generators are hooked up so that the positive terminal of the battery and the positive terminal of the mechanical generator are connected together when the cutout relay contact points are closed. In other words, the voltages of these two generators normally oppose each other, although this is not always recognized. B y L. V. L A R S O N AMMETER CUTOUT CURRENT VOLTAGE RELAY REGUUTCR REGULATOR Above, Fig. 1: The battery and generator are the two electrical generators in the charging circuit. Below, Fig. 2: Vibrating cutout relay contact points is one result of wrong polarity It is common practice, of course, to connect batteries and generators positive-to-positive and negative-tonegative, and it is assumed that current usually will flow into the battery. It is this assumption which tends to hide the fact that these two units are opposing each other electrically. A review of important details will help to clear up this point. The voltage produced by a normal lead-acid storage battery is approximately 2.1 volts per cell or.3 volts on a fully charged -volt battery on open circuit. The generator voltage, on the other hand, is limited by a voltage regulator on which a limit setting of 7.4 volts can be considered normal. Under these conditions the maximum generator voltage is approximately one volt higher than the open circuit battery voltage, and this difference in voltage will cause current to flow from the generator into the battery. When the battery is in

31 Left, Fig. 3: Method of polarizing generators of the "A" circuit type. (Externally grounded field) Right, Fig. 4: Method of polarizing generators of the "B" circuit type. (Internally grounded field) a discharged condition, its open circuit voltage is lower, being approximately volts. The greater difference between the voltage of the battery and the generator then results in a higher charging rate to the battery. As the battery becomes charged its voltage increases and there is thus less difference between the voltage of the battery and the regulator setting so less current will flow. This is the action which takes place when a battery is being charged. The opposing voltage of the battery on charge is called its counter electromotive force. It is a variable voltage which changes according to the state of charge of the battery and its internal resistance. Since counter voltage always depends on the amount of charging current flowing, it cannot be measured separately. The voltage read across the charging circuit includes not only battery counter voltage but also voltage drop in the leads and connections. This total voltage equals the controlled generator voltage. Thus it is the in- crease in counter voltage which tends to reduce the charging rate as the difference between generator voltage and battery voltage becomes less and less. The problem would be much simpler if we could always depend upon the generator having a polarity to match the polarity of the battery with which it is used. Unfortunately, a generator will build up voltage of either polarity depending upon the magnetic polarity of the pole shoes in the generateor. Changing the direction of current flow in the field roils will change the magnetic polarity of these pole shoes and voltage then will build up in the reverse direction. Whenever the battery, generator, regulator, or the wiring is removed from the vehicle, the generator polarity may be reversed accidentally by touching the battery circuit to the field terminal of the generator. Also, generators removed for repairs may be tested on a stand with a battery connected for the opposite polarity. It is for these reasons that all electricians are cautioned to always polarize the generator correctly after cornpleting electrical repairs and before starting the engine. Vibrating cutout relay contact points is on? result of wrong polarity (Fig. 2). With high-resistance, lowoutput generator armatures, this condition is not too serious as the generator field usually is polarized correctly during an interval when the cutout relay points are closed. This can be called self-polarization. With low-resistance, high out-put generator armatures, as used in most current production generators, it is the exception rather than the rule for generators to be self-polarized. This operation must be performed by the mechanic or electrician working on the vehicle. To polarize generators with the "A" circuit, or externally grounded field, as in Delco-Remy passenger car systems, a jumper lead should be used to complete a temporary circuit Left, Fig. 5: Heavy arrows indicate paths of current flow as generator builds up voltage Right, Fig. : Only one path for current flow when cutout relay contact points close CUTOUT RELAY CUTOUT RELAY

32 between the BATTERY and AR- MATURE terminals of the regulator (Fig. 3). On the higher output generator it is necessary, in addition, to insulate a generator brush from the commutator when making this flash connection. Otherwise, a high discharge will result. To polarize generators with the "B" circuit, or the type with the field circuit grounded inside the generator, as on heavy-duty Delco-Remy generators, disconnect the field lead from the FIELD terminal of the regulator and flash on the BAT- TERY terminal of the regulator (Fig. 4). These procedures send battery current through the field circuit in a normal manner so that the generator will be polarized to produce voltage of the same polarity as the battery with which it is used. As long as the relay points continue to vibrate when the generator and battery are hooked together with.the wrong polarities, the only trouble resulting is burned cutout relay points. Unfortunately, the arc occurring as the points separate is hot enough to melt the point material and the contact points may weld together. Under this condition the generator becomes properly polarized and the battery will be charged, but the points witl not open when the engine is stopped. The high current discharge - which then occurs can burn'up the wiring in the charging circuit or damage the generator armature. The higher the system voltage the more chance for points welding together. On twenty-four-volt systems the points usually vibrate only once or twice before welding occurs. The complete story behind this action is rarely explained, but by following the direction of current flow in a circuit diagram the answer is quite simple. As the generator buiids up voltage, current flows through the field coils in the direction indicated, due to the magnetic polarity of the pole shoes in the generator (Fig. 5). There is also a path for current to flow through the charging circuit to the voltage or operating coil in the cutout relay. When the generator voltage is high enough to crate enough magnetism in the core of the cutout relay, the armature is attracted and the cutout points are closed. With the generator and the battery hooked up so that the positive terminal of the generator is connected to the negative terminal of the battery, two things take place. First, in a six-volt system, for instance, the six-volt mechanical generator is connected in series with the six-volt chemical generator. We then have twelve volts applied to a circuit with very low resistance, and a high current flows through the charging circuit. Secondly, at the same instant, the positive voltage of the generator is being impressed on the insulated side of the circuit, and the positive battery voltage is being impressed on the ground side of the circuit (Fig. ). With practically no difference in voltage between the two sides of the circuit, no current will flow through the field coils and the generator voltage falls to a low value. The current flow through the voltage coil of the cutout relay then drops to zero and the relay points open. The fact that an arc occurs as the contacts separate indicates that there still is current flow through the charging circuit at that instant. This arc becomes more severe at higher voltages with a greater tendency to weld the contact points. As soon as the circuit is broken (by the relay conwts) the generator again builds up voltage to close the relay points and a repetition of the above action takes place. However, if the points weld during this action, the generator becomes polarized with the battery, as already discussed, and normal charging will result. It doesn't take long for trouble to occur, however, when the engine is stopped. The relay can no longer function, and the battery discharges at a high current rate through the low resistance of the charging circuit. The replacement of wiring and units destroyed in this way never fails to be expensive. "A.stitch in time saves nine" is an old proverb, but it "pays off' to be sure that the generator is correctly polarized after repairs are completed and before the engine is started. GENERATOR-REGULATOR CIRCUITS Two different methods are used to connect the generator field circuit to the generator armature. the "A" circuit and the "B" circuit. "A" CIRCUIT The field resistance and contact points of the regulator are connected between the field terminal of the generator and ground so that the generator field is grounded through the regulator. REGULATOR I( "B" CIRCUIT The field resistance and contact points of the regulator are connected between the field terminal and main terminal of the generator so that the field is connected to ground inside the generator. 4 REGULATOR w GENERATOR
