CSEES Degree Requirements 1. Degree Requirements: a. Credit Hour Requirement: To complete your master s degree, you will need to take 38 credit-hours of relevant, graduate level coursework. Language courses DO NOT count towards the credithour requirement. Under semesters, we anticipate students taking (3), 3 credit-hour, area studies courses per semester and (1), 3 credit hour language course. To meet the 38 credit-hour requirement, students will also need to consider enrolling in a Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Forum. These courses will typically be 1 credit hour courses that help students prepare themselves for paper presentations and professionalization. Example: Slavic 6000: Slavic Literature, Film and Culture Studies Professionalization. RETURNING STUDENTS ONLY: Students who started the degree in or before the Academic Year will have slightly different requirements as they have to convert their coursework from quarter to semesters. If you are a returning student, you will not have to meet the 38 semester-hour requirement. Instead, you will have to have taken 12 area studies graduate courses by the end of your graduating quarter. b. Language Requirement: Again, language classes do not count towards your credit-hour requirement. However, students are still expected to enroll in these courses and obtain either a 4 th - year or higher proficiency in Russian, or a 2 nd -year or higher proficiency in all other languages. c. Thesis/Exam Requirement: In addition to the credit hour requirement, students must EITHER take a master s exam OR write and defend a thesis. This should be done in their final semester. See point (4) for more details on this requirement. d. Required Coursework: i. As part of your course work, there is only one required class. This is Slavic 6501 (formerly Slavic 700). ii. Students must choose an area or discipline of concentration. At least 9 semester-hours (or 3 courses) must be taken in their concentration. iii. Students can only take 2 courses at the 4000 level (formerly 500 level). These courses must carry graduate credit.
1. Note: This means that courses at the 3000 level or lower ARE NOT eligible. Also, area studies classes CANNOT be taught by graduate teaching associates but language classes can. iv. All other electives must be taken at the level. This does not include language courses. v. Elective classes should be taken from 3 different disciplines. Ex.) History, Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures, and Art History vi. Electives also need to come from at least two different colleges or divisions within a college. Ex.) History and Public Policy or History and Political Science For more information on the divisions within the College of Arts and Sciences go to: vii. Students should also be aware of and enroll in 2 REE&E Forums for a total of 2 semester credit hours over the course of the program as necessary. These courses are not required but will help the student to reach the credit-hour requirement. If a student has enrolled in 4 semester-hour courses, they may not need to take these courses. viii. Following this plan, students will meet the 38 credit-hour, the Slavic 6501, and the area of concentration requirements. Sample Course Selection: 1. Slavic 6501(3 credit hours) 2. REE&E Forum (1 credit hour) 3. Slavic 6500 (1 credit hour) 4. History 7280 (3 credit hours) Area of Concentration 1, Discipline 1, & College/Division 1 5. History of Art 8605 (4 credit hours) Discipline 2 6. Political Science 7216 (3 credit hours) Area of Concentration 2, Discipline 3, & College/Division 2 7. Russian 6254 (3 credit hours) 8. History 6999 (Thesis writing) (3 credit hours) 9. History 6999 (Thesis writing) (3 credit hours) 10. History 7275 (3 credit hours) Area of Concentration Public Affairs 5700 (3 credit hours) 12. Slavic 7621 (3 credit hours) 13. Russian 5250 (3 credit hours) 14. History 7650 (3 credit hours) Total Credit Hours: 39

The area of concentration should reflect a geographic area of interest, i.e. Russia, Central Asia, etc. A discipline can be chosen as well (history, political science, etc.) 3. Selection of Advisor: Students entering the program by default will have Dr. Hashamova as their advisor. However, students are able to choose their faculty advisor based on their area of interest. Students should choose from faculty members that work in the relevant area AND with whom they have taken courses. CSEES staff and second-year students are a good resource if students have questions about with which faculty members they should work. The selection of an advisor should be done by the end of the 1 st year. Once a student selects a new advisor, the student needs to contact Dr. Hashamova and get her approval to change advisors. Then a student needs to contact Maryann, giving her Dr. Hashamova s approval and the information
on the new the advisor. Maryann will then contact the graduate school to have the change processed. 4. Master s Thesis or Exam Option: a. Exam Option: Once a student has selected their advisor, they also need to choose between writing a master s thesis or exam. For the exam option, the student will sit a 4-hour, written exam during their last semester that will be graded by their exam committee that consists of their advisor and two other faculty members. Students should select the two other faculty members based on their interests and their prior work with the committee members. It is IMPERATIVE that students ask their advisor and committee members to serve on their committee and to talk with them about their timeline for graduation to ensure that the committee members will be available at the time of the exam. To start the exam and graduation process, students need to fill out and submit the Application to Graduate- Master s form provided by the Graduate School by the third Friday of the semester in which they wish to graduate*. On the Application to Graduate form, students will list their committee member s and select the non-thesis option. The form must be signed by their advisor and Dr. Hashamova before being turned into the Graduate School. Once the form is turned into the Graduate School, the Graduate School will send Maryann a Master s Examination Report that will need to be signed by all committee members when the student passes the exam. The student will turn this form into the Graduate School. 50% of the exam will be questions from the advisor, and then the remaining committee members will each contribute 25%. Usually, the advisor will discuss with the student whether the 50% will consist of one question or multiple. It is expected that the advisor s portion of the exam will take 2 hours to answer while the other committee members questions will take an hour each. b. Thesis Option: If the student selects the thesis option, ideally the student will register for independent study hours with the advisor for two semesters. This will help the student to research and write the thesis and work closely with their advisor. To register for thesis hours, the student first needs to get permission from the advisor. The student then needs to work with the advisor s home department to find out the call number for thesis hours. Many departments will have a specific course number for master s thesis research hours often with a 6999 call number with a specific.# for a specific faculty member. Ex.) History Other departments will have a different system for registering for hours. Students will then need to select at least
one other committee member. This again should be someone with whom the student has worked and spoken. Like the exam option, students must apply for graduation by the third Friday of their last semester. On the Application to Graduate, students will fill-out their committee members, select the thesis option, and get the required signatures. Once the application has been received, the Graduate School will send Maryann the master s examination report, which the student should then pick-up from the office. This must be signed by the committee members when the thesis is approved and turned back into the Graduate School and a copy given to Maryann. After turning in the examination report, the student then must make any corrections to the thesis that their committee recommended and format the thesis according to Graduate School guidelines. Students are advised to stop by the Graduate School to have their thesis reviewed for formatting pointers. Please see the Graduate School s website for formatting guidelines and deadlines*. *It is the student s responsibility to check with the Graduate School about deadlines, as they can change.
