Early Concept Design Review - Project Purpose Late concept design review identifies some errors that are systemic and cannot be easily corrected after the concept has been selected. Could you carry out Circulation assessment at early Concept Deign, so it would inform us in the selection of a concept?
Integrated Review in Early Concept Design for US Courts Preliminary Spatial Validation 8.14 Verify BIM Measurements Circulation/ Security Check 8.21 Verify BIM Measurements 8.8 Create Three or More Preliminary Concepts 8.13 Refine Three Concepts 8.20 Develop Best Concepts Preliminary Concept Design is a crucial early step for GSA project review Final Concept Design is the last step for project review before DD
Early Concept Design Review - Project Purpose The PBS-100 Guide lays out the process clearly. An Early Design Concept begins with a simpler set of given requirements: -a space program of the occupancy, number and type of occupant spaces -the site and general site plan -major circulation and building zoning -a budget or expected cost figure -major fire code considerations -exterior zoning -and recently, preliminary energy analysis
Context - Concept Design Energy Review provide automated feedback on early stage concept designs for energy implications, catching energy issues early, speeding and standardizing GSA reviews

GSA BIM Guide for Early Concept Design Review Building defined as a set of floor slabs, at the appropriate height/spacing (above and below grade External walls, with thickness, percent glazing All slab covered by space objects, with department space name (and base space name if defined) Elevators/stair spaces defined by space names One wall object covers one level One wall object covers three levels

Automated Early Space Program Review
Automated Early Space Program Review
An Example: Actual Department Names in the Model This should be Building Support Facilities department. This could be handled by the fact that its space name mechanical room is always under the Building Support Facilities. But most cases require correct Department-Space name set. Well-named Department example. Computer recognizes it. Insufficient Meaning. For which Judge s Chamber? (Magistrate / District / Senior District / Bankruptcy Judge) Blank Name Standard Name defined in the Design Guide is USMS. But U.S. Marshal is also a correct name. Synonym DB needs to handle this. Misspelled Name Secured is non-standard name, but it is recognizable by our name mapping algorithm using secure key word mapping.
Space Naming for GSA and U.S. Courts Preliminary thru Final Spatial Validation Cost Estimation Space Classes Space Names Departments and Base spaces Circulation Space Classes Energy Internal Load Classes Department Names Base Space Names Application-based Space Names
Our BIM Program embedded these circulation rules into BIM-analysis software Court design guide U.S. Courts Design guides Selected circulation issues Define standard syntax and structure for rule families and procedures Normalized circulation issues Show where design fails IFC Court house Data Testing a court house model on Rule Checking SW Reference back to Design Guide description Generate rule set Rule Sets
Automatic circulation rule checking Circulation rule checking by using start, target and transit space conditions Circulation rule checking based on graph representation of space (paths shown in green)
3D circulation rules are implemented as a route graph that defines all paths within the building going through space that can be used for through circulation Conditions regarding the distances traversed, the types and security of spaces in the traversal path, and other conditions can be used to define allowable and illegal circulation paths. On a 6- story courthouse, approximately 27,000 routes were tested using 312 circulation rules in approximately 15 seconds.
Understanding an occupant s path traversals User-based occupant rules on path traversals ensure that a path between a judge s chamber and attorney s office can be made within restricted spaces (Figure 1). These rules also check multi-floor paths (Figure 2). Figure 1 Figure 2
Preliminary Design Energy Analysis In selecting a concept many energy-impacting decisions are being made, even though many have not been made and there is uncertainty in final energy costs. The purpose of energy analysis at this state is to understand the relative energy costs of each alternative and the energy impacts of the design features Major decisions and feedback available form this stage: building massing: number of storeys, footprint Orientation, self-shading, impact of applied shading Areas where building envelope receive major gains Impacts of courtyards and atriums
Preliminary Design Energy Analysis Input values from IFC Building geometry Construction types (associated to wall thickness) Heat gains by occupant density (associated to space name) Input values from Solibri Interface Location (City & State) Building North Orientation (0 = North up in plan) % fenestration pre façade External wall class Default values Solar Distribution Idealized HVAC system
MODELING /DEBUGGING EFFORTS Thermal zone generation Aggregate spaces by occupancy type Create perimeter zone (15 perimeter) Assign internal heat gains (revised to match new P 100) Zone surface subdivision Departmental spaces Secondary space boundary definition Thermal model with aggregated spaces by occupancy types, with added perimeter zones, and subdivision of zone surfaces Open to below condition (atrium) Internal walls (level of detail) zone inside a zone Next: surface overhangs + = Level 1: Level 2 Horizontal surface subdivision
ENERGY INTERFACE DEVELOPMENT Automated generation of thermal model Open IFC file Build: generate/visualize thermal zone Simulate: save IDF & call Energy Plus Aggregate results: view output report build Option to edit input values Revise building orientation Modify envelope construction type Change % window Add external shading simulate results

The Method Being Followed: Requiring specially configured BIM models during design destroys the design effectiveness uning BIM Robust post-processing of widely varied assessment tools is the only reliable means to gain effective use All the interfaces developed here are made compatible with their analysis interfaces through significant post-processing Concept design Design development Contract model Construction
