2 Page 2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Holy apostles Parish Family, This weekend we begin our annual Diocesan Stewardship Appeal: Many Roads, One Path.. This goes right along with our theme this year, Walk with Me This year our video emphasizes Campus Ministry at NIU and Youth Ministry, plus Deaf Ministry. We are very much affected by the Youth and Campus Ministry as many of our young people go to NIU from this area. (They even took me 35 years ago!) Many of our vocations to priesthood come this way. It is important for us to do our part. Stewardship is the attitude of sharing the gifts God has given us with those who need them. We are called to share 5% with the parish, 2% with the diocese and 3% for other important charities. I choose to share about 6% since I do not have to worry about housing cost and raising children. I also aim at paying back in this way the cost of my seminary education. The history of our parish is to receive about $110,000 in pledges then have to ask for $30 to 40,000 more in February to cover the shortfall. It costs us about $2,000 for that mailing. I AM APPEALING TO YOU TO PLEASE GIVE WHATEVER YOU HAVE GIVEN IN THE PAST, SO WE DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS SECOND MAILING. This year our shortfall was $5,000. My hope is that those of you who have not contributed can cover this for the upcoming year. YOU CANNOT GIVE TOO MUCH TO THIS COLLECTION, SINCE ANY OVERAGE IS RETURNED TO THE PARSIH, JUST LIKE YOUR INCOME TAX. Please help us start a new tradition and be done by the end of the month, so we can focus on bigger goals that we need to address. It costs us additional funds to fall short and we already pay over $100,000 in interest on a $1.7 million debt. Thank you to those who have been so faithful. Our bishop has towed the line well and given us no raise in goal, so we hope to meet that challenge. Our 2015 goal is $145,914. Gratefully, Father Paul WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS FOR: All the homeless, the unemployed, the military, the addicted, the grieving, the imprisoned, and the physically and emotionally ill. 5 Page 5 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 We Share Our Blessings This week, our Parish Tithe will be given to P.A.D.S. of McHenry County (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). Your Giving Helps When Funds are Tight When money is extremely tight, tough choices are made on how available funds are spent. Families often need to choose between paying a utility bill or paying for other essentials. Recently, a young couple in such a situation paid their Nicor bill, but were running out of food and struggling with a lack of clean clothes to wear to work. Through your generosity, the St. Vincent de Paul Society provided groceries and a prepaid laundromat card to assist this family. This assistance along with prayerful support helped see them through a difficult situation. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Jn 15:12 Consider Serving as a Eucharist Minister Eucharistic Minister Formation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 19 at 7 PM in the church. Vocations Corner: Conformity with Christ Just the other day I was thinking about how great a desire I have to grow in my relationship with Christ and yet at the same time how difficult it is to achieve this. As I was praying about this I opened a book of letters written by my favorite saint, St. Catherine of Siena. I began to read a letter in which she told someone that we can not the achieve perfect conformity with Christ without complete detachment from conformity with the world. The fact that she uses the word conformity is what I think makes her statement so powerful! Often we can think of the importance of being in union with God, but to think of being conformed to him is much more drastic! Being conformed to him means that our union with him is affecting us and changing us in moving us into who it is that we are! How often do we think about the fact that the things that we spend our time with, end up affecting who we become? Catherine continues and says "though they seek honors, they are disgraced; in pursuit of riches, they are poor because they are not looking for genuine wealth. Wanting happiness and pleasure, they find sadness and bitterness because they lose God who is supreme happiness. In light of this I simply ask you, are your plans for your life in conformity with God's will? Or are your plans only in conformity what the world says will make you happy? Think about this long and hard and beg God for the grace to help you to adjust your plan accordingly, because Catherine is right, supreme happiness only comes when we conform our lives to God! The Church of Holy Apostles, McHenry, IL Diocesan Chorale Seeks Singers The Rockford Diocesan Liturgical Chorale (formerly known as the Diocesan Chorale ) is seeking singers for the upcoming Ordination Masses for the Diocese of Rockford. The Chorale is directed by our own Music & Liturgy Director, Feargal King. Anyone may join the Chorale, but some previous choral experience and the ability to read or at least be able to follow music notation is helpful. Singers interested in participating are added to an e- mail list and notified when an event is imminent. Singers commit to only those events for which they are available. A few rehearsals are held for each event in a small but growing number of parishes around the Diocese. Schedule for the upcoming events are as follows: Sat., May 16, 11 AM - Transitional Diaconate Ordinations (final step before Priesthood for those to be ordained in 2016) Sat., June 6, 11 AM Priesthood Ordinations To volunteer to sing with the Chorale for either or both Ordination Masses, or to join the Chorale Mailing list, or to find out lots more information including event and rehearsal schedules and music lists, please visit: You may choose to sing at both or one of these Masses. Founded in the 1960 s by Bishop Arthur O Neill, the Rockford Diocesan Liturgical Chorale is made up of volunteer choral singers from all over the Diocese of Rockford, who give generously of their time and talent to provide music for major diocesan events. Serving under the direction of Feargal King since 2002, the Chorale aspires to be an example of musical excellence for the entire diocese.
