6 IEEE BigData 2014 Taipei Satellite Session Keynote Speakers About the Speaker: H. T. Kung is William H. Gates Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University. He is interested in computing, communications and sensing, with a current focus on machine learning, compressive sensing and wireless networking. In conjuction with his course on Internet of Things (IoT) at Harvard in Spring 2014, he studies application opportunities and technology challenges in IoT. Prior to joining Harvard in 1992, he taught at Carnegie Mellon University for 19 years after receiving his Ph.D. there. Professor Kung received his B.S. from National Tsing Hua University. About the Speaker: Dr. Wenwey Hseush, Ph.D. in Computer Science, Columbia University, is the Chairman and CEO of ebizserve and CEO of MacroData Inc. In 1995, Hseush founded TimeCruiser Computing in New Jersey, US, a developer of innovative community and enterprise portals for the education marketplace. In 2000, he joined Computer Associates as VP of Advanced Technology, overseeing operations for all Computer Associates invested joint venture companies in Asia. In the same year, Hseush started ebizprise as a Computer Associates joint venture company in Taiwan. He was dedicated in developing the market of Supply Chain Collaboration, specializing in S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) and CPFR (Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment). In 2009, he published a book, Fair Collaboration. Since 2011, Dr. Hseush has been working on Big Data computing research, developing an in-place computing technology (BigObject ) based on data transformationcomputing programming paradigm. BigObject aims to deliver a high-performance (100x- 1000x), powerful data processing model compared against traditional relational database and SQL. About the Speaker : Jan-Ming Ho received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Northwestern University in He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from National Cheng Kung University in 1978 and his M.S. at Institute of Electronics of National Chiao Tung University in Dr. Ho joined the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica as an associate research fellow in 1989, and was promoted to research fellow in He visited IBM s T. J. Watson Research Center in summer 1987 and summer 1988, the Leonardo Fibonacci Institute for the Foundations of Computer Science, Italy, in summer 1992, and the Dagstuhl Seminar on Applied Combinatorial Methods in VLSI/CAD, Germany, in In , he had served as Director General of the Division of Planning and Evaluation, National Science Council. 6

7 Dr. Ho s research interests cover the integration of theory and applications, including combinatorial optimization, information retrieval and extraction, multimedia network protocols and their applications, bioinformatics, open source, web services, and digital library and archive technologies. Dr. Ho has also published results in the field of VLSI/CAD physical design. He has served as board member of several NPOs including Institute of Information and Computing Machinery (IICM), Frontier Foundation, Taiwan, Y.T. Lee Foundation Science Education for All, WuSanLien Foundation on Taiwanese History. He had served as President of IICM in and President of Software Liberty Association Taiwan (SLAT) in He had served as Associate Editor of IEEE Transaction on Multimedia. He was Program Chair of Symposium on Real-time Media Systems, Taipei, , General Co-Chair of International Symposium on Multi-Technology Information Processing, 1997 and will be General Co-Chair of IEEE RTAS He was also steering committee member of VLSI Design/CAD Symposium, and program committee member of several previous conferences including ICDCS 1999, and IEEE Workshop on Dependable and Real-Time E-Commerce Systems (DARE'98), etc. In domestic activities, he had been Program Chair of Digital Archive Task Force Conference, the First Workshop on Digital Archive Technology, Steering Committee Member of the 12th VLSI Design/CAD Symposium and International Conference on Open Source 2001, and is also Program Committee Member of the 13th Workshop on Object-Oriented Technology and Applications, the 8th Workshop on Mobile Computing, 2001 Summer Institute on Bio-informatics, and Workshop on Information Society and Digital Divide. About the Speaker: Mihaela van der Schaar is Chancellor's Professor of Electrical Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles. She is an IEEE Fellow, a Distinguished Lecturer of the Communications Society for , the Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and a member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing. She received an NSF CAREER Award (2004), the Best Paper Award from IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (2005), the Okawa Foundation Award (2006), the IBM Faculty Award (2005, 2007, 2008), the Most Cited Paper Award from EURASIP: Image Communications Journal (2006), the Gamenets Conference Best Paper Award (2011) and the 2011 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Darlington Award Best Paper Award. She received three ISO awards for her contributions to the MPEG video compression and streaming international standardization activities, and holds 33 granted US patents. She is also the founding director of the UCLA Center for Engineering Economics, Learning, and Networks (see netecon.ee.ucla.edu). Her research interests include engineering economics and game theory, multi-agent learning, online learning, decision theory, network science, multi-user networking, big data and real-time stream mining, and multimedia. 7
