ENVIRONMENTAL Emphasizes reducing or preventing pollution in industrial systems, waterways, water systems and soils. PROCESS Focuses on design, operation and control of process industries such as oil and gas, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, polymers and plastics and inorganic chemicals and fertilizers. CO-OP... Students take foundational courses on physical, chemical and biological sciences, transport phenomena, kinetics, separations, process engineering and design and economics. 13 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM CIVIL engineering OKANAGAN CAMPUS Civil Engineering students obtain a strong fundamental knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and structures. Students further focus their studies on sub-disciplines including environmental, geotechnical, hydraulics, structures and transportation engineering. Students understand the design and structural analysis of a truss, use building information modeling software and learn about plane surveying methods. 15 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM ELECTRICAL engineering OKANAGAN CAMPUS OPTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS BIOMEDICAL Concentrates on courses ranging from anatomy, physiology, biomedical instrumentation, bio-signals and systems, medical imaging, regulatory standards and design processes. ELECTRICAL ENERGY SYSTEMS Emphasizes control, protection and reliable operation of power grids, electromechanical actuators, electric propulsion, electrical power systems as well as industrial and manufacturing processes. NANOTECHNOLOGY AND MICROSYSTEMS Focuses on next-generation electronics where chips integrate mechanical, fluidic, biological and optical components, and where nanometer scale features are forcing changes in the design of transistors and other basic circuit elements. Electrical Engineering students learn topics including physics, electric circuits, analog and digital electronics, electric and magnetic fields, communications, signal processing and controls. Students can take advanced courses related to systems and controls, nanotechnology and microsystems, biomedical engineering materials and electromechanics. CO-OP... 17 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM GEOLOGICAL OPTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS APPLIED GEOPHYSICS Focuses on a combination of geotechnical, environmental as well as minerals and fuels exploration. ENVIRONMENTAL Emphasizes groundwater flow, contaminant migration, design of landfills and environmental cleanup. GEOTECHNICAL Focuses on site investigation, design of foundations, tunnels, excavations, dams, reservoirs, landfills, roads, railway grade, slope stabilization, mine excavations and forestry. MINERALS AND FUELS EXPLORATION Concentrates on developing skills in petrology as well as geology and economics of ore deposits or petroleum and coal. Foundation courses in geotechnical and environmental are also taught. Geological Engineering students apply the principles of engineering, chemistry and physics. This interdisciplinary program combines aspects of earth sciences, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering with a fundamental understanding of natural processes, materials in the earth surface and near-surface environments. 18 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM INTEGRATED Integrated Engineering students receive a multidisciplinary undergraduate engineering education, with a focus on engineering design. Students develop knowledge and skills in Chemical and Biological, Civil, Electrical, Materials, Mechanical and Mining Engineering during their academic studies. They take courses in material, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and systems involving biological, chemical and electro-mechanical components. CO-OP... 19 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM MATERIALS OPTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS BIOMATERIALS Concentrates on biomedical equipment, physiology/anatomy, clinical and industrial biomedical engineering, biomaterials and nanofibre technology. MANUFACTURING AND PERFORMANCE Emphasizes microstructural analysis, failure of materials, microstructure evolution, electronic materials and composite materials. MINERALS AND METALS EXTRACTION Focuses on physical mineral processes, reactor design, process mineralogy, hydrometallurgy and flotation. Materials Engineering students develop in-depth knowledge of the entire life cycle of materials. This includes the recovery of materials from minerals, making engineered materials, manufacturing materials into products, understanding and evaluating materials performance, proper disposal and recycling of materials and evaluating societal and economic benefits. 20 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM MECHANICAL engineering OKANAGAN CAMPUS Mechanical Engineering students gain extensive knowledge in topics including design, fluid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing processes, solid mechanics and control systems. They develop a foundation in engineering concepts and application of practical design skills which are integral to the program. OPTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS BIOMEDICAL Focuses on solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, dynamics and design as applied to implantable and external biomedical devices. Students learn mechanical properties of biological tissues and study human body systems. MECHATRONICS Integrates core mechanical engineering courses and selected electronics and software engineering courses to design devices with embedded electronics, sensors, actuators and related systems. Students develop skills in machine design and analysis, instrumentation, control systems and software engineering. THERMOFLUIDS Studies related to aircraft, naval architecture, clean energy technology, pulp and paper, fluid and thermal processes, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning. CO-OP... 21 UNDERGRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM MINING OPTIONAL SPECIALIZATIONS MINING Focuses on structural geology and rock mechanics, mining methods, rock fragmentation, mine feasibility study, mine ventilation, ore deposit modeling, mineral planning and mining design. PROCESSING Emphasizes comminution, physical separation, flotation, hydrometallurgy, process control, processing precious metal ores, plant and process design, oil sands processing and coal preparation technology. Mining Engineering students gain a thorough knowledge of general engineering principles, complemented by courses specific to mining and mineral processing. They learn responsible mining practices and receive a cross-discipline approach to mining by developing a fundamental understanding of mining, mineral processing, economics, management and environmental and social responsibilities. 22 GRADUATE CO-OP PROGRAM MASTER OF OKANAGAN CAMPUS The Master of Engineering is a course-based professional program designed for engineering graduates who wish to complement engineering courses with management knowledge. In addition to engineering courses, students can choose from a variety of courses such as entrepreneurship and technology management. SPECIALIZATIONS IN MASTER OF : Biomedical Chemical and Biological Civil Clean Energy Geological Electrical and Computer Materials Mechanical Mining MASTER OF SOFTWARE SYSTEMS Master of Software Systems students advance their skills in cutting-edge knowledge in software engineering while using a blend of theory and practice. The program emphasizes software system development and implementation by providing a background in modern network architecture, internet and web programming, real-time and distributed systems, security, modern programming languages and databases. 20
