HOW TO BET ON GREYHOUNDS Gambling can be addictive. Please play responsibly.
Greyhound racing in the UK takes place every single day (except Christmas Day). The first races start around 11am and there s a race every seven or eight minutes until 7.30pm. Then the main evening programme begins, with a race every few minutes until 10.30pm. INTRODUCTION Betting on greyhound racing can be seen as a quick fix for some bettors, with each race lasting around thirty seconds (although the ante-post market for the Derby, the sport s biggest event held every June at Wimbledon trades for almost the entire year). Australian greyhound racing is also covered on Betfair, with races taking place daily from late at night UK time through til early afternoon. Sky Sports offers live televised coverage of greyhound racing on 35 nights of the year usually midweek - with its schedule based around major events. Racing Post Greyhound TV (Sky Channel 212), provides two live race meetings every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. 2
Greyhound racing is split between graded and Open racing. TYPES OF RACE Graded racing at a track is confined to locally based dogs that generally race only at that track. The dogs are provided by contract trainers. Open racing, which is included at most tracks, is for the higher class greyhounds, which travel around the country to race. Open racing is split into competitions. The Derby is the most important and is run over six rounds. Other major events usually comprise three or four rounds. There are also many one off Open races. You may also come across BAGS racing, which are races covered in UK betting shops. BAGS stands for Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service although the racing takes place throughout the day. BAGS races run from 11am to 9.30pm seven days a week with a race every seven or eight minutes. The races comprise two matinee meetings, another two in the afternoon, and two or three in the evening. Many of the races are for graded dogs, although the programme includes regular Open racing and major competitions. Most markets are based on individual races. 3
Most markets are based on individual races. For BAGS racing the markets are: win, place and forecast For evening racing, for major tracks not covered in the betting shops and off the card races at BAGS evening meetings, the market is: win MARKETS For TV Cards racing, such as Racing Post Greyhound TV meetings, the markets are: win, place, forecast and Trap Challenge For TV Cards racing, such as Sky Sports meetings, the markets are: win, place and forecast, plus TV Specials like betting without the favourite, Trap Challenge, Multi Traps, winning distances, match bets and more. On Betfair, you can also take the Betfair SP on most individual races. For Ante-post racing for major competitions, the markets are: win (and occasionally place such as for the Derby) and to reach final In Australia, the markets are: win and tote (including win, place and exotics - such as exacta, trifecta and quadrella, etc.) 4
Reading the form of Greyhound Reading the form of Greyhound racing in the UK 22:35 time of the race Race 12 the number of the race on the card The BETFAIR EDUCATION 750 the sponsors or racename 750m the distance the race is run over Flat greyhounds can run over jumps as well as on the flat. (OR) tells us this is an Open Race 1st 250 & Trophy prize for the winner RACE CARD Others 50 prize for other entrants 1 this is the trap number for the greyhound Red the colour of the jacket for Trap 1 (in the UK Trap 2 is Blue, Trap 3 is White, Trap 4 is Black, Trap 5 is orange and Trap 6 is black and white stripes) BETFAIR BOB the name of the greyhound Owners name owner of greyhound Trainer trainer of greyhound Date last time the greyhound ran or trialled Dis distance of race in meters (H) denotes hurdles race. Tp The trap number the greyhound ran from Stm/Hcp Split Time is the time it took the greyhound to cross the winning line first time around. In a Hcap race this will show the head start distance received R11 (11 meters), SCR (this means the greyhound was running off scratch and was giving a start to one or more rivals) 5
Spl Splits (often called bends) shows the posigon the greyhound was in at various points. Fin the finishing position By the distance the greyhound won or was beaten by Winner/2nd Handicap/Venue details of the winning greyhound or the second if Betfair Bob was the winner (the venue for the race if different from current track if a Handicap race then the handicap of the winning or 2nd greyhound) Remarks In running comments RACE CARD WinTm the time the race was won in Going N is Normal. However, if the track has been subjected to heavy rain or was quick drying in the summer after watering it will be given a + or rating. These +30 or 30 are to show if the track was quicker or slower than normal (in 100ths of a second). Kilos the weight of Betfair Bob for each race. SP/T the official SP of Betfair Bob for each race. Class the class of the race. Usually A1, A2, A3 etc. the lower the number the better the race. OR is an Open Race and T is a trials race. Calc Time the time the greyhound recorded taking into account the going. 6
Most trading on greyhounds is done in the five or so minutes before the race to coincide with the on-course market. This can mean the market fluctuates rapidly during that period. Many punters base their wagering almost entirely on the activity in the market, keeping a close eye on the on-course markets as they change (via websites such as sportinglife.com) and note discrepancies between them. Many players take particular interest when a dog is trading under on Betfair i.e. shorter than the on- course market. Sometimes less-fancied greyhounds will trade at hugely inflated odds compared to their on-course price. With dramatic fluctuations taking place in a short period these races offer excellent trading opportunities. BETTING ON BAGS RACING While it s possible to play purely by monitoring the movement of the markets, potential profits can be further increased with even a minimal amount of homework. Many punters dip in and out of the racing, maybe trading for just a handful of races and are totally oblivious to what s happened earlier on at the meegng. They will have no idea whether the track has a bias i.e. is favouring the inside or outside runners. This usually occurs during wet weather, where a track may favour the outside, or during the winter when salted tracks, to stop them freezing, can often result in more winners on the inside. Sometimes a bias is so blatant even the most uninformed punter will realise what s going as the markets become distorted, but the key is to anticipate it. Taking a view that there might be a bias early on at a meeting, even a marginal one, offers a potentially golden opportunity for profit, although it s important to continually monitor the results and adjust your views appropriately. Audio commentary on BAGS races is available and a quick search on Google will provide a number of alternatives. 7
OTHER GREYHOUND BETTING Ante post betting offers the chance to build up a portfolio of greyhounds for a major event. It s most widely used for the Greyhound Derby, both in the months leading up to the competition and then during the event itself where the six round format offers excellent opportunities to trade. While the markets for other major competitions offer less liquidity, they nevertheless serve as a useful channel for those wanting to back and lay runners between rounds. Open races are often lop-sided in terms of the betting market with many shortpriced favourites. Knowing which ones to take on is far from an exact science, but the discerning punter should consider whether a dog is favourite purely on the basis of its big name trainer, whether it has any previous form (or at least has been given a trial) at the track in question and if it s effective from the trap it s been given. For example is a railer, trained by a leading handler having a first run in trap five at a track it has not previously been around trading at 1.5 really the good thing the market suggests it to be? The Betfair SP offers a Starting Price alternative to taking the current price on any individual race and is calculated by balancing SP and exchange bets at the time each race begins. A projected SP can also be displayed on the racecard to give a constantly updated indication of the expected final odds. 8
BETTING ON AUSTRALIAN GREYHOUNDS Bettng on Australian greyhound racing is something of a secret club for UK punters. For those who insist on an endless stream of information and data when wagering, it s hard to beat. Full form and results are readily accessible, and clicking through the Betfair cards will take you to The Form Hound which provides ratings and tips on every race covered, while extensive commentary feeds are easily accessible via live radio streams. In addition to the usual markets available on UK races, Tote Extra provides an array of forecast and trifecta opportunities, while additional markets such as Best of 4, Mid Tote and Top Fluc monitor the various Australian Tote and On-course pools to offer best prices. There s a wealth of information available about each race, with a racecard and form pointers easily accessible via the Betfair website. Plus there s more detailed information on sites such as racingpost.com and greyhound-data.com. 9
SIMPLE BETTING METHODS Study the Betfair Greyhound Racing Guide for each race for an easy-to-read formcard and pointers such as quickest break and quickest racetime. Use betting.betfair.com for comprehensive previews and tips for all the Sky Sports and Racing Post Greyhound TV covered meetings. Browse racingpost.com for greyhound spotlights and tips and a betting guide for individual races. Use sportinglife.com for live on-course betting shows. Check earlier results at a meeting for a possible track bias and whether the track is favouring early pace runners or strong finishers. 10
ADVANCED BETTING METHODS Study individual races to determine how a race might be run. Being able to enjoy a clear run is the most important factor to any greyhound s chances, so look at the make-up of the race in terms of the number of early pace runners compared to finishers and the split of railers compared to wide runners. You should also note pointers such as dogs likely to improve - usually younger dogs, but perhaps graded dogs that have recently switched tracks - as well as bitches returning from season. Sixteen weeks after her season date is usually the time a bitch reaches her peak form. Use greyhound-data.com to study the full form of individual dogs to gauge their optimum conditions and preferences. For example, a dog may win regularly from trap one in A6 races, but fail to score when drawn trap two in A5 events. Be aware of dogs with poor strike rates, a run of second places doesn t necessary mean a dog is about to strike gold it may prefer finishing in that position! Build up knowledge of individual tracks statistics. For example, trap three is usually very effective at Romford, while trap five wins fewer races than average at Nottingham.
