2 Tuesday 9 June Outline of the day Conference programme Registration with tea and coffee Concourse Welcome and conference opening session Professor Peter McGeorge, Vice-Principal for Learning and Teaching, Aberdeen, and Chair of the Scottish Higher Education Enhancement Committee (SHEEC) Argyll Suite Keynote - Transition Pedagogy: A whole student, whole-of-institution framework for successful student Professor Sally Kift, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at James Cook University, Australia, and President of the Australian Learning and Teaching Fellows (ALTF) From a success-based perspective, this presentation will discuss research conducted by the ALTF that examined a 'whole student', whole-ofinstitution framework for first year curriculum design and transition support. The impetus for this work was the recognition that, in all their diversity, students come to us in higher education to learn. It is therefore within the curriculum that students must be engaged and supported for multiple, and realise a sense of academic and social belonging. It will be suggested that conceptualising the first year curriculum as the 'organising device' and the 'glue that holds knowledge and the broader student experience together' (McInnis, 2001) is central to transitional engagement, success and retention. A major ALTF outcome has been the articulation of a Transition Pedagogy: a guiding philosophy for intentional curriculum design and support that carefully scaffolds and mediates the first year experience for contemporary heterogeneous cohorts. Transition Pedagogy is framed around the identification of six First Year Curriculum Principles, delivered by academic and professional staff working in partnership for whole-of-institution enhancements. These six, interconnected organising Principles, together with examples and strategies for their implementation, will be examined, and their capacity to promote the inclusion and retention of non-traditional students in particular will be explored. Most recently, Transition Pedagogy has been extended to frame the capstone or final year student experience for successful transition out into the world of work or further study. This application will also be discussed. McInnis, C (2001). Signs of Disengagement? The Changing Undergraduate Experience in Australian Universities.
