2 PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENT This document applies to students beginning their accountancy studies at Massey University in The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants makes every efft to ensure the accuracy of the infmation provided. However, the infmation covered in this document is subject to change from year to year. Students and prospective students are advised to check with the University and the Institute befe applying f, planning courses. The infmation contained in this document will assist you in planning your academic programme, at Massey University, to meet the Institute s academic requirements f admission to the College of Chartered Accountants (CA) the College of Associate Chartered Accountants (ACA) the College of Accounting Technicians (AT) This document contains details of the codes and titles of approved subjects available at Massey University that meet the Institute s academic requirements f admission to each college. There may be pre-requisite requirements f the approved subjects listed in the document. You should contact Massey University to determine any pre-requisite requirements f the approved subjects listed. The Institute recognises specified cross-credits. The Institute will accept restricted passes and exemptions towards NZICA's required topics where students have been awarded a full degree diploma by Massey University. NZICA will not accept exemptions restricted passes in cases where a student has only completed selected papers at Massey University. Once you have completed the academic requirements of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, you should apply f provisional membership of the appropriate College of the Institute. The application fm f provisional membership can be downloaded from the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants website - On completion of the academic study, practical experience and professional competence programme requirements, you may apply f full membership of the appropriate College of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. Details of the practical experience requirements and professional competence programme are available from the Institute s website. 3 COLLEGE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS (CA) AND ASSOCIATE CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS (ACA) ACADEMIC PROGRAMME The academic requirements f becoming a Chartered Accountant Associate Chartered Accountant are the same. Students intending to become Chartered Accountants Associate Chartered Accountants must complete the following academic requirements: 1. Completion of a bachel s degree Completion of a bachel s degree at Massey University will satisfy this requirement. 2. Students must complete approved subjects to cover the Institute s required topics. The following table outlines the approved subjects students must complete at CPIT to satisfy the required topics: Auditing and Assurance Finance Accounting Infmation Systems *Commercial and Cpate law Organisational management Quantitative methods Approved subjects Advanced Advanced Auditing Advanced Auditing Advanced Business Finance Accounting Infmation Systems Advanced Accounting Infmation Systems Law of Business Organisations and Commercial Law Organisations and Management Statistics f Business *To satisfy the commercial and cpate law topic in full f the CA & ACA Colleges, students must ensure they complete the approved subjects outlined in this academic schedule. If the commercial and cpate law topic has been partially completed at another tertiary the student will need to approach their new tertiary and discuss the possibility of obtaining specified cross credits towards the approved subjects as outlined in this academic schedule. If the tertiary is not willing to grant specified cross credits the student will need to complete the approved subjects outlined in this academic schedule in der to satisfy the commercial and cpate law topic in full Academic requirements Massey University page 3

4 COLLEGE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS (CA) ACADEMIC PROGRAMME FOR MPAF STUDENTS Students completing the Massey University Master of Professional Accountancy and Finance (MPAF) who are intending to become Chartered Accountants must complete the academic requirements outlined below. 1. Completion of a bachel s degree Completion of a bachel s degree at an NZICA accredited tertiary institution (ATI) will satisfy this requirement. Students entering the MPAF program who have completed an academic qualification overseas will be need to have their qualification assessed by NZQA as being comparable to the learning outcomes of a bachel s degree from a New Zealand university. 2. Students must complete approved subjects to cover the Institute s required topics. The following table outlines the approved subjects that MPAF students must complete at Massey University satisfy the required topics: Auditing and Assurance Finance Accounting Infmation Systems *Commercial and Cpate law Organisational management Quantitative methods Approved subjects Advanced and Repting Advanced Strategic Auditing and Assurance Tax Cpate Finance Accounting Systems Law of Business Management in Organisations Quantitative Methods f Accounting and Finance *To satisfy the commercial and cpate law topic in full f the CA & ACA Colleges, students must ensure they complete the approved subjects outlined in this academic schedule. If the commercial and cpate law topic has been partially completed at another tertiary the student will need to approach their new tertiary and discuss the possibility of obtaining specified cross credits towards the approved subjects as outlined in this academic schedule. 5 COLLEGE OF ACCOUNTING TECHNICIANS (AT) ACADEMIC PROGRAMME Students intending to become Accounting Technicians can meet the academic requirements f this designation by completing the following: 1. The New Zealand Diploma in Business (with required topic coverage), 2. Two years of degree level study (240 points 16 papers) (with required topic coverage) Students wishing to complete the academic requirements f the College of Accounting Technicians at Massey University can complete the following: Accounting Principles Accounting Practice Commercial Law Organisational Management Business Communication Infmation Technology And two from the following: Auditing Business Finance And: Approved degree level subjects Accounting Introducty Legal and Social Environment of Business Organisations and Management Not required f degree level study Management Infmation Systems Intermediate Auditing Business Finance Further degree-level papers to satisfy the two years study requirement F infmation relating to NZICA s alternative pathways to AT membership please visit Academic requirements Massey University page 5
