6 Denmark Denmark is a small country in northern Europe with a unique mix of Scandinavian and European culture. You could say Denmark is Scandinavia s gateway to Europe. Thanks to Denmark s international outlook, visitors find it easy to live and study in the country. The native language is Danish, which resembles other Scandinavian languages. However most Danes speak English fluently as a second language. Most households receive international television channels, cinemas show foreign films in the original language and foreign newspapers are available at libraries. Denmark plays an active role in global business and politics. Danish universities have a long tradition of welcoming international students and researchers. Over the last 20 years, the number of international study programmes has increased considerably with the expansion of universities global networks. Geography Denmark is located in Northern Europe north of Germany, south of Norway and southwest of Sweden between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It consists of the peninsula of Jutland and more than 400 islands, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The landscape is very flat. You are never more than 52 kilometres from the sea in Den mark, famous for its long white beaches. Woodland makes up 11 per cent of the countryside. Even the towns and cities are full of parks and green spaces. Copenhagen is the country s capital, with some 1.2 million inhabitants. Often called the Paris of the North, the city has an old, historical centre and many pedestrian streets, cycle paths and parks. Climate and the environment The climate is temperate, with mild, windy winters and cool summers. January and February are the coldest months and August is the warmest month. The wind can be quite strong, which explains why the Danish wind industry is the world s largest. Wind power accounts for almost 20 per cent of Denmark s power consumption. Danes are very environmentally conscious. Nine out of 10 Danes routinely recycle bottles and glass. Seven out of 10 take short showers lasting no more than five minutes. Three out of four turn off the light in rooms they are not using. And two out of three Danes always buy environmentally friendly products. Tap water is of high drinking quality and the air is clean. Politics Denmark is a constitutional monarchy and modern democracy. The country is headed by the royal family, which has a ceremonial role devoid of political power. Folketinget, the Danish parliament, is based on a system of proportional representation, whereby several parties can be represented. Thus the government is often a multi-party coalition. For more information on Foketinget see EU membership Since Denmark joined the EEC/EU in 1973, the country has played a significant role in environmental and social matters as well as the EU enlargement process. Denmark has not introduced the euro, the EU common currency, due to a referendum in Denmark in 1992 in which the nation rejected the Maastricht Treaty. However the krone, Denmark s national currency, is closely linked to the euro because of Denmark s fixed exchange-rate policy. 7 Photo: Cees van Roeden Photo: Bob Krist Photo: Klaus Bentzen Welfare Denmark is a wealthy country. Its economy is open and dependent on foreign trade. GDP per capita is one of the highest in Europe. Denmark is a welfare society with a relatively even distribution of wealth. Income tax is relative to earnings, so the more you earn, the more tax you pay. Thanks to the Danish taxation system, citizens are well cared for by the state. Danes enjoy free education, medical treatment, hospitalisation and a pension from the age of 65. The state also subsidises unemployment benefit, dental costs and nursing home accommodation. This gives people a considerable degree of security. Equality Denmark is a world example in terms of gender equality. Danish women have a high employment rate almost 75 per cent. Women are well represented in Folketinget and county and local councils. Equal pay has been achieved to a large extent. Religion A total of 83.3 per cent of Danes belong to the Lutheran National Church. The second-largest religious group are Muslims, who make up about five per cent of the population. Personal safety Foreigners visiting Denmark often mention security and safety as the country s most distinctive features. Children walk to school on their own. Even famous business executives don t usually use bodyguards. The country s parliament Folketinget is open to the public, and it is not uncommon to see government ministers cycling through the capital. Even the Queen can go shopping with minimum security personnel. Road safety has improved considerably over the last 30 years. The number of people killed or severely injured in traffic accidents more than halved between 1970 and Denmark is sheltered from natural disasters. 8 Danish University Education Danish universities welcome foreign students from around the world full degree students as well as exchange and guest students. Denmark is known for its modern teaching approach and high academic standards. Higher education institutions can be grouped into research-based universities, specialist university-level institutions and colleges. This brochure describes the eight Danish researchbased universities that award bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees. For information on other sectors see: intensive programmes. Students on these programmes usually come to Denmark as an exchange or guest student. Summer programmes Some universities offer a wide range of courses during the summer holidays. Study programmes in English International students can choose from a range of courses and full degree programmes taught in English. Joint programmes are offered in cooperation with partner universities in other countries, enabling students to obtain a joint or double degree. If you speak Danish, you can also follow study programmes taught in Danish. International students can choose from the following options: Full degree programmes Students follow a full-time study programme at bachelor or master level and receive a Danish degree or joint degree. Exchange/guest student programmes Exchange students usually come to Denmark via a bilateral or multilateral exchange at their home university and follow courses of their choice at the host institution for one or two terms. Tailored programmes Some institutions offer study programmes tailored to the needs of international students, including one-term study opportunities and For more information on study programmes taught in English at Danish universities see: Degrees International students can choose from the following options: 3-year bachelor s degree (BA or BSc, 180 ECTS) The main entry requirement for a bachelor s degree is an upper secondary-school diploma. 2-year master s degree (MA or MSc, Danish Candidatus programmes, 120 ECTS) The entry requirement is a bachelor s degree of good academic standing in the same subject as, or one similar to, the master s degree. Some universities also give international students the opportunity to complete studies in one year with a postgraduate diploma. 1- or 2-year master s degree (MBA programmes, 60 ECTS) Most of these part-time programmes allow students to work while studying. This brochure only deals with 2-year MA/MSc degrees (120 ECTS) and not with 1- or 2-year master s degrees (60 ECTS) or PhDs. For more information on these degrees contact the relevant university. Modern teaching approach Universities in Denmark offer a dynamic study environment. Small seminars and group work are central to most study programmes. Students are expected to participate in class and develop an analytical approach to their studies. The Danish university system emphasises independent study and self-discipline. This means students have to work hard but can fulfil their potential. Project work in groups is part of almost all study programmes. Students develop analytical skills in groups, gaining valuable experience for their future careers. Project work also has social benefits. Students get to know each other while working together and often become friends. Exams in Denmark are both oral and written, depending on the course. This differs from the university exam format of many other countries where only one method is used. Communication between students and professors is informal. Students call teachers by their first name and discuss topics in class. Students are asked to evaluate their teachers abilities after each term in an anonymous form. As a result, teaching methods are developing and improving constantly. Did you know that more than 80 per cent of Danish women between the years of 30 and 54 are active in the job market? High-quality education Danish university education is rooted in a continental European university tradition based on the continuous interaction between teaching and research. Academic standards are high. Studying in Denmark offers students access to up-to-date research through lectures and project work. Studying in Denmark equips students with new skills and can be a once-in-alifetime experience. Written and oral examinations are conducted by teachers and an external examiner, who ensures all exams meet set standards. All universities in Denmark are public and subject to state regulation. Universities enjoy a considerable degree of autonomy but must abide by a framework of quality assurance, which Act on universities (the University Act) To safeguard student influence on education and teaching, the Dean shall set up the necessary number of study boards... Each study board shall comprise of equal numbers of representatives from academic staff and students, selected by and from academic staff and students respectively 10 Choose a Danish University 2007

11 guarantees that all Danish universities meet national and international academic standards. All study programmes are to be accredited on a five-year cycle by the independent Danish accreditation institution. As part of the accreditation of the study programmes, the universities must document that the accredited study programmes are satisfactorily integrated in the university s system for quality assurance, cf. the European standards and guidelines for quality assurance. Danish language courses An entry requirement to study programmes taught in Danish is a strong command of the Danish language. You can demonstrate proficiency by taking Studieprøven (proficiency test at C1 level in Danish), which is preparatory for higher education. This test comprises of four exams and shows ability to read, write, speak and understand Danish. Some university study programmes demand a certain mark. The test can be taken at sprogcentre, language centres throughout Denmark. It is also possible to take Danish language courses at some universities. Terms The academic calendar at most Danish universities is divided into terms, which include public holidays. At most universities the first term begins in August/September and finishes in December/January, including the Christmas holidays. The second term starts in January/February and ends in June, and includes the Easter holidays. Photo: Ole Bang Berthelsen Communication between students and teachers is informal. This makes discussions in lectures interactive and dynamic. Students are expected to take an analytical approach to their studies.
