5 Professor Paul Simshauser, Master of Commerce Professor Paul Simshauser has had his finger on the pulse of Australia s energy sector for more than 20 years. As AGL Energy s Chief Economist and Group Head of Corporate Affairs, he has responsibility for regulated pricing, economic policy and sustainability, energy regulation, government affairs, media and corporate communications. A constantly evolving industry landscape, where sustainability has emerged as the key factor for 21st century business, prompted him to update his skills and knowledge through postgraduate study. When I realised the extent of the structural changes sweeping across the energy industry, I knew it was crucial to keep pace, he said. Paul returned to Griffith University to study a Master of Commerce. I thought carefully about my career and its future evolution within the industry. The Master of Commerce made perfect sense as it allowed me to take a wealth of industry experience back into a study environment and incorporate one with the other. It proved a valuable means of building momentum and keeping on top of an everchanging world. My postgraduate studies both sharpened and expanded my thinking, and led to new and increasingly efficient approaches to business, he said. Paul, who is also a Professor of Economics at Griffith University, says a holistic approach to sustainability is vital to the success of any business today. If a business is to be successful going forward, everything it does now must be sustainable. From community to environment to finance and economics, you can t take one without the other. 3
