5 Introduction As in other years, the ICS presents facts and figures on the previous year in the Annual Report. For the first time, the Annual Report is released via the ICS website (http://www.icsgraduateschool.nl/). As most information on the ICS - e.g. the research program or the training program - is available in folders on this same website, the Annual Report 008 is much more concise than previous reports. In four chapters, we present information on the organization and research input (chapter ), research output (chapter ), ICS PhD students (chapter ) and funding of PhD projects (chapter 4). In the appendices, additional information is given on the defense rates and labor market position of ICS PhD students. Full lists of ICS PhD students, postdocs, ICS Dissertations, Current ICS PhD students and ICS postdocs are completing this Annual Report 008. A major event in 008 was the assessment of research quality in Sociology. For the ICS, this assessment likewise included an evaluation of the PhD program. The outcomes of this assessment, published in the QANU Research Review Sociology 008, can also be found on the ICS website and the full report can be downloaded. With pleasure, we repeat here the results of the ICS programs involved in the assessment. Each program was assessed on the dimensions quality ( international recognition and innovative potential ), productivity ( scientific output ), relevance ( scientific and socio-economic impact ), and viability ( flexibility, management, and leadership ). Five-point scales were used for the assessments: ( unsatisfactory ), ( satisfactory ), ( good ), 4 ( very good, internationally competitive ), 5 ( excellent, work that is at the forefront internationally ). The resulting scores for ICS Groningen are , and for Utrecht The Nijmegen scores in a local 006 assessment were A second major accomplishment in 008 was the realization of the Agreement of Cooperation National Research Network ICS ( Samenwerkingsovereenkomst Landelijk Onderzoeksnetwerk ICS ). As is meanwhile well known, there is a tendency at Dutch universities to focus on local graduate schools and proposals for KNAW (re-) accreditation of interuniversity schools are no longer endorsed by the Dutch university boards. Given this tendency, the ICS - KNAW accredited since 99 - has searched for an alternative warranty of the merits and the quality of the ICS. The result of these efforts, and of intensive consultation of the executive boards of the universities and the Faculties involved in the ICS, is an Agreement of Cooperation National Research Network ICS, effective since January, 009. As long as the Dutch universities stick to this policy, the ICS board considers this agreement of cooperation, together with the research assessment and the evaluation of the PhD program as an equivalent of KNAW accredition. Taken together, the agreement of cooperation and the research assessment offer adequate institutional context and conditions for the ICS to proceed as an interuniversity research and graduate school. 9 . Board and International Curatorium As of the initial accreditation of the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS) by the Royal Dutch Academy of Art and Sciences (KNAW) in 99, each participating university (University of Groningen, Utrecht University and later the University of Nijmegen) formed a specific and independent unit. The national Research School ICS consists of the Groningen research institute GCS (Groningen Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology), the Utrecht research center (ICS/Utrecht), and the Nijmegen Section for Sociological Theory and Methodology (NCS) of the Department of Sociology. On December, 008, the Faculties Deans of the universities involved in the ICS have signed an Agreement of Cooperation National Research Network ICS ( Samenwerkingsovereenkomst Landelijk Onderzoeksnetwerk ICS ), effective since January, 009. In 008, Rafael Wittek (RUG) was scientific director of the ICS. Qualitate qua the scientific director is present at all board meetings. Werner Raub was chairman of the ICS Board, which in 008 further consisted of: Siegwart Lindenberg (RUG) Henk Flap (UU) Werner Raub (UU) Wout Ultee (RU) Louk Hagendoorn (UU) (Advisory Member) Peer Scheepers (RU) (Advisory Member) Jo van Engelen (Faculty of Business Development, RUG) (External Member) The scientific director is assisted by a Research Secretary, who is also Secretary to the ICS Board. Furthermore, the Scientific Director and the Board receive support from an International Scientific Curatorium consisting of Yannick Lemel (Laboratoire de Sociologie Quantitative du CREST-INSEE), Nan Lin (Duke University, Durham, NC) and Rolf Ziegler (University of Munich, Germany).

They continue to contribute actively to ICS research, PhD training, and PhD supervision. Formal restrictions require to fix their appointment at.0 fte.. ICS PhD Students and Postdocs As is shown in Table., there were 69 PhD students and 9 postdocs at the ICS in 008. The inflow is quite structured - 0 to 5 PhD students enter the ICS as a year group in September every year - but students leave at various times, depending on the moment they finish their PhD theses. Therefore, the number of PhD students may vary slightly at different moments in the same year. Table. gives full time equivalents for ICS faculty, PhD students and postdocs: following the Standard Evaluation Protocol, the standard research fraction of PhD students and postdocs is set at 70% of their appointment. A full list of PhD students is provided in Appendix 7 and ICS postdocs are listed in Appendix 8 (updates December, 008). Table. gives the ICS research input according to the SEP Guidelines (SEP ). 5
