1 Dr. Jel Cne/Dr. Alexis Dbsn (512) Detxificatin Prtcl Peridic detxificatin makes sense in keeping yur bdy as fine tuned and healthy as pssible. We knw many disease states, including heart disease, cancer, and chrnic inflammatry disease states have a strng crrelatin with diet, lifestyle, and envirnmental factrs. There are many different cleanse ideas, but if we start with the knwledge f the anatmy and physilgy f the bdy we can make the best apprach t a detxificatin prcess pssible. We knw that there are several systems by which txins and waste prducts are eliminated thrugh the bdy. By having knwledge f these systems we can increase ur ability t aggressively detxify ur bdy. There are fur majr detxificatin systems ur bdy uses. The first is the respiratry system which eliminates gaseus waste prducts such as carbn dixide, a waste by prduct f glucse metablism. Anther system is the integumentary system, in which lactic acid and varius ther wastes are remved. We als use the digestive system, especially the hepatbiliary system t remve sme chlesterl, bile secretins, and ther txins bund in bile. The liver is als the primary cngugatr f metablic txins int water sluble prducts which can be sent t the kidney fr remval. The remaining system is the renal system, in which the kidney remved nitrgenus wastes, including urea, ammnia, creatinine, and ther drug metablites frm the bdy. I have als added the lymphatic and circulatry system as an eliminatin cmpnent, as they play a crucial rle in the mbilizatin f cmpunds that need t be remved frm the bdy. I prefer t use as simple a plan as pssible when cming up with a detxificatin prgram. One reasn is that I dislike taking many capsules and pills. I just plain dn t like it. I wuld much rather have a patient make a dietary change, rather than add supplements t their system when pssible. Keep that in mind when beginning a detx prgram. It must strive t be dable, and it must be cmprehensive at the same time. Als, many peple may benefit frm a pre- and/r pst- bld analysis, including bld lipids (fats), a cmplete bld cunt, and a cmprehensive metablic panel. This detx prgram has several cmpnents that are based n the abve fur eliminatin pathways. All are imprtant and play an imprtant rle in the whle f the prcess. 1. Integumentary The integumentary system has clse ties with subcutaneus fat depts and is als a back up system f eliminatin when the kidneys d a pr jb f eliminatin. We ften see skin rashes, itching, dermatitis related t the bdy s trying t reslve txins and metablic metablites. We enhance this system thrugh ne primary way which is the lw temperature dry sauna r infrared sauna. These can 1

Heat is in the infrared spectrum f light, s yu ften hear peple talk abut this wavelength f energy. It sunds rather fancy, but again, is simply heat energy. The dry sauna frces the integument t sweat t try t cl the bdy. It des s much mre that steam saunas, a.k.a. wet saunas. In ding s a great amunt f the circulating bld is shunted t the skin away frm ther rgans, and this is why peple ften get red when sweating and exercising. I recmmend adding Niacin, vitamin B3, which causes a peripheral flushing reactin t the sauna in rder t further increase circulatin t the integument. Start in the lw hundreds ( mg) and up t 1,000mg (this is what I take). Niacin can be intense, s start with less rather than mre. I recmmend ver-the-cunter B3, such as a capsule (fast disslving) made by TwinLabs, rather than a tablet (slwer t disslve). I als start with minutes f exercise, which starts the sweating prcess and increases circulatin. During the dry sauna yu shuld als drink at least a liter r s f reverse smsis water every minutes, which may r may nt have herbs added t it (read n abut these additins). This therapy can be dne daily t multiple times per week depending n the aggressiveness f yur detx. Sme peple als d this sauna fr 3-5 hurs per day n very serius detxificatin prgrams, including drug detxificatin prgrams. Other minerals, salts, and vitamins shuld be cnsidered if attempting smething f that nature, hwever. Yu shuld feel quite amazing after this prcess. (I usually take the Niacin just prir t starting the 30 minutes f exercise. It facilitates rapid digestin, s it gets it dne and ut f yur system by the time yu are ready t leave the sauna. If yu d daily sauna treatments, yu shuld make sure that yu have plenty f rganic mineral salts in yur diet. D nt be afraid t add sea salt t the fds yu eat. Yu will be lsing lts f salt in the saunas, and getting adequate salt in yur diet is an easy way t replenish it. If yu develp any eye twitching, muscle twitches, r spasms, yu may need t add sme salt, r ther minerals, t yur diet at this time. A cld shwer after the sauna feels great. 1. Take the Niacin 2. Begin 30 minutes f aerbic exercise such as: Bicycle/stair climb/treadmill/elliptical 3. Sit in the dry sauna with plenty f drinking water fr 45 minutes t 1 hur. Gastrintestinal and Hepatbiliary The gastrintestinal and hepatbiliary systems play a large rll in the remval f dietary wastes, and in sme prcessed metablic wastes. The crnerstne f this system is fiber. It binds chlesterl, bile, excess dietary fats, and it prvides an smtic drag f water that makes fr a bulky, well-frmed stl. Bulky stls essentially help t sweep ut the intestines, and keep them functining nrmally. Prper fiber intake is als assciated with weight lss, lwer chlesterl, and inversely related t hemrrhids, varicse veins, and hypertensin. We ften use psyllium seed husk, which can be fund at mst grceries. It is very inexpensive and has a neutral taste. I tend t avid cathartic herbs, such as Senna, as they can cause sme dependency and are nt really necessary in my pinin. In additin t fiber, the liver can be stimulated with herbs and nutrients that stimulate bile secretin, bile liquefactin, and increased bile prductin. This aids in the liver s ability t remve txins, and als in the gall bladder s ability t efficiently cntract t mve bile alng the biliary tree. I als fcus n adding adequate amin acid supplementatin t the detxificatin prgram in the frm f a medical meal. This ensures adequate vitamins and minerals that are used in the detxificatin prcesses f Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III detxificatin in the liver and gastrintestinal tract. It als ensures adequate amin acids supplementatin that is required fr prper Phase II cnjugatin prcesses. One f these areas is the lack f fiber t bind txin-rich bile. Withut fiber, bile salts, including txins secreted by the liver, are simply reabsrbed in the small intestine. Als, a fasting diet des nt prvide amin acid resurces that are needed fr the liver t be able t cnjugate free-radicals frmed in Phase I Detxificatin, and the persn ends up with increased free-radical activities, which are damaging in and f themselves. Fasting is als very hard fr many individuals due t the pssibility f very lw bld sugar events which make peple mdy, lethargic, and ften cause headaches. It is nt a bad idea, hwever, I dn t always feel this is necessary, and like I stated befre, I want t keep csts minimized and the prgram as simple as pssible. If yu have recently had ral r I.V. antibitic, antibacterial, r antifungal drugs, yu want t add a prbitic during this detxificatin regiment t help reinnculate the cln. The prebitic psyllium is ften sufficient fr mst patients, withut having t add a prbitic, such as L. sprgenes r Bifidbacterium. 1. Start by adding 1 teaspn f psyllium seed husk t an 8 z glass f water in the evening befre bed. After a few days add anther, until yu are taking 1-2 Tablespns f psyllium in a large glass f water prir t ging t bed. Since the parasympathetic system is mst active at night, this will set yu up fr a regular bwel mvement in the mrning when yu wake up. Regularity will becme a pattern and yu will be n yur way t better health. 2. I ften add an herbal extractin t aid in varius detxificatin mechanisms. With this system I will smetimes add a frmula that cntains Milk Thistle Seed, Dandelin Rt, Barberry Rt, Blue Flag, and Rsemary. Yu may want t add an ral Liver-G.I. Detx 3

I ften cmbine frmulas r add ne that seems particularly pertinent t the patient s needs. 3. Add a prtein beverage medical meal t aid the cnjugatin f metablites in the liver and intestine. Take medical meals as yur nly fd and beverage (ther than water and herbs, supplements) in the first tw days f the detxificatin prgram, as many as yu like. D nt add fruit, juice, nuts, sweeteners t the beverage during the first tw days. Use as meal supplements fr the remainder f the detxificatin prgram, while adding in lw antigen fds (mre n this later). The meal replacement shuld be used nce t three times daily in additin t ther fds and meals. I recmmend at least 2 per day. 4. Try drinking ht water with ½ a lemn squeezed in it as a mrning rejuvenatr. It acts as a bwel stimulant and shuld, alng with the fiber, make fr a regular bwel mvement in the mrning. The warm water and acid cmbine t stimulate the release chlecystkinin, which in turn stimulates bile acid release and will facilitate a bwel mvement. 5. Peple wishing t add anther level f detxificatin may wish t add a cffee enema. Ask abut this if yu have serius chrnic illness, multiple persistent symptms, are very practive in health maintenance, etc. The respiratry system is ften aided by ther techniques such as exercise, meditatin/prayer, and relaxatin techniques. Full, deep, belly breathing is imprtant fr the prper expansin f the diaphragm. Substantial increases in xygen delivery are seen with deep breathing. It als activates the brainstem, and increases lung perfusin and exchange. Often parts f the lung are nt used during respiratin, and breathing techniques can increase their use. 4. Renal 1. Relaxatin techniques, visualizatin, meditatin, and prayer, are all techniques that have been assciated with increased parasympathetic respnses and relaxatin f many chest and thracic muscles that are ften tight, in additin t many ther benefits. If yu are interested my relaxatin-meditatin utline, please ask. 2. Practice taking lng slw breaths in fr a full 7 secnds. Then hld yur breath fr 26 secnds. Then slwly release yu breath ver a full 14 secnds. Try this in a series f up t 5 cycles at a time and try this nce per day. If yu cannt d this all at nce, wrk up t it. The renal system is ne f the mst imprtant systems fr eliminating the very txic nitrgenus wastes that we prduce in metablic prcesses. Frtunately, it is ften mst helped by adequate hydratin. We d smetimes add a diuretic fr varius reasns that can increase renal clearance f txins, thugh this is nt always necessary. 4

If I am adding in liquid herbs (see under Final Thughts), I simply add them t the cntainer and make sure I finish the beverage by the end f the day. It is imprtant t eliminate sft drinks, cffee, and caffeinated tea during this detx, as they add acid, caffeine, and/r diuretic effects. Reverse smsis water is available at water dispensaries and many grceries. 5. Circulatry and Lymphatic As I mentined earlier, the circulatry and lymphatic systems are nt exactly eliminative systems, they bth play a large rll in the prcess indirectly. Exercise is a great way t stimulate bth f these systems, and is a natural immune stimulant. I recmmend the exercise prir t sauna therapy as a great type f exercise during this detx prgram. Outdr bicycling, walking, lake r cean swimming, kayaking, etc. are als great things t d as well, as they include fresh air, sun shine, and endrphin release. Massage is als anther way t increase lymphatic clearance, thugh it is quite a bit mre expensive than exercise! It des feel great and has psychlgical benefits in additin t increased lymphatic clearance. Cnsider getting a massage smetime during the detx curse f therapy. I have sme therapists names if yu need a referral. 6. Diet 1. Get 30 minutes f exercise prir t the sauna, and get ther utdr exercises when yu can 2. Cnsider getting a massage during yur detxificatin prgram. The earlier the better, because yu may want anther! Yur diet during the detxificatin prgram shuld be heavy n fresh fruits and vegetables, clrful and varied-vegetable salads with light (lemn/apple cider vinegar/balsamic vinegar and live il dressings), steamed, grilled, r rasted vegetables, lean un-breaded meats, such as fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, and lw in (r n) antigenic fds such as grains, yeasts, and dairy. We reduce heavy starches like a full, baked ptat r mashed ptates when pssible. Grains shuld be used in mderatin, and gluten shuld be avided when pssible, as it is a very cmmn allergen. Other gd whle grains, include brwn rice, quina, r buckwheat grats. A typical breakfast culd be steamed spinach, garlic, fresh sliced tmat with sea salt, and tw pached eggs with ht lemn water r herbal tea. It culd als be a medical meal, a smthie, r fruit. Lunch culd be a big, diverse salad with clrful vegetables f all srts, garbanz r black beans, and chicken r tuna salad with lemn, healthy maynnaise, and finely minced red nin and dill, sea salt and cracked pepper. It culd als be an Ezekiel bread/ezekiel bagel sandwich, bulging with avcad, cucumber, red nin, tmat, spruts, fresh basil, and balsamic vinegar. Dinner culd be a free-range grilled chicken breast, trut, r salmn, with brwn rice, rasted turnips, asparagus, and nins alng with a side salad. It culd als be a 6 z. bisn steak, with green peas, and a large, diverse salad. Dessert culd be fresh in-seasn fruit. Snacks may include raw, unsalted nuts (in mderatin), rasted r raw vegetables and hummus/baba ganush, rganic fruit, a hard biled egg, r a medical meal beverage. Anther thing t cnsider is that yur plate shuld 5

This is an easy way t keep the vegetable cntent high. ½ f yur dinner plate culd be salad, the ther ¼ a side vegetable, and the remaining ¼ culd be rice and/r a meat. This keeps the animal prtein lwer, and the vegetable intake high, while still cntaining adequate prtein. The medical meal will supply a cmplete prtein. Peple generally tend t have ¾ f the plate as a meat (think a 16 z. steak) with an iceberg lettuce salad as the remaining ¼ f the plate. This is nt what YOU shuld be ding. This detxificatin diet is diverse, full f chices, and highly nutritius. This diet FEELs great. Peple feel different. Planning is everything, s shp ahead, make ahead, and plan ahead, s yu wn t be caught in a bad situatin. As a general rule, yu shuld likely be making mst f yur meals. There are sme restaurants and grceries that d cntain fresh, healthy meals, but be hnest abut yur fd chices at restaurants. If yu are unsure f the ingredients, assume the wrst! The meal replacement beverage can be useful when it is hard t get a prper meal in. Simply put a scp f pwder in yur bttle and add water when yu are ready t drink it, r make it ahead in the mrning. We d use spruted grain bagels and bread in mderatin, such as Ezekiel brand bread, fund in the frzen sectin f many grceries. Dn t g verbard, thugh, as grains can be highly antigenic. These seem less s, but they are nt perfect either. If yu interested in further allergy testing, ask abut the 164 IgG Bld Panel fr delayed-nset hypersensitivity testing. I als discurage a lt f fruit juice, as it is fiber-less, cmpared t whle fd cunterparts. Often peple get a lt f calries, and very quickly, with either carrt r fruit juice cnsumptin. If yu d have juice, I wuld recmmend a vegetable-type juice blend f that is primarily celery, tmat, spinach, kale, garlic, and parsley/cilantr, with a smaller amunt f carrt r apple juice fr flavr. Smething f this nature can be added in the detx as desired, but make sure yu are taking the psyllium supplement. Other resurces fr diets are the Palelithic Diet, the Suth Beach Diet, a Mediterranean-type diet, and Susan Summers diet bks, which all have sme similarities and gd recipes. I als recmmend the avidance f simple sugars, such as hney, agave nectar, sucrse, turbinad sugar, and artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin, and sucralse. I d have patients use stevia and/r sugar alchls, such as AptheSweet, which we carry at ur ffice. Stevia shuld strive t be pure stevia if pssible and nt cmbined with dextrse, sucrse, r ther larger sugar mlecules. With this said, ccasinal natural surces f sweeteners are nt ging t cause a big prblem. Just be hnest with yurself abut hw addicted yu are and hw ften yu are using them. They can cause fluctuatins in bld glucse and in turn, insulin regulatin, which can greatly affect many systems. The veruse f simple sugars is ften related t fat-gain, weight lss truble, carbhydrate-craving cycles, and eventually metablic syndrme X and diabetes. Repetitive high sugar meals are related t lwered grwth hrmne release (a bad thing), increased insulin release (a bad thing), and lwered fat burning, alng with adrenal and thyrid verstimulatin. 7. Final Thughts A detxificatin prgram can be anywhere frm a few days, a week, t preferably, a full fur week prgram. Peple s lives change at the end f a full fur week detxificatin prgram. Peple ften lse weight n this prgram, thugh this is nt a weight lss prgram per se. It is als imprtant t cnsider all aspects f this cleansing prcess and nt leave ne ut. Many rgan systems are synergistic and back the thers up, s nt ding ne aspect f this detx may adversely affect the ther systems. Fr example, the lw temperature dry sauna ften releases sequestered txins frm fat in the subcutaneus and bne marrw regins. It will g thrugh the bld and eventually be released in the skin r in the liver. If it is released in the liver, in will travel via the intestine and may get reabsrbed in the small intestines and then can redepsit in the fat! Hwever, sme patients can feel bad fr a perid f time, in what we call a Hertz Heimer reactin, r healing crisis. This is simply the bdy releasing sequestered, fat-bund txins; bne bund txic metals, viral lad, etc. Sme patients get lw grade fevers, jint pain, swllen glands, r just feel tired, r slightly ill. Thugh this is rare, the prgram des everything t prevent situatin by blstering every eliminatin pathway available. It is imprtant fr this reasn t d all aspects f the prgram.
