2 The Presentation of the Lord Page 2 Unconditionally Pro-Life, Pro-Family The Presentation of the Lord February 2, 2014 He had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way. Hebrews 2:17a Today we get to watch the pageantry of the Super Bowl. May the best team win! But as we see two teams fight it out to be called the champions, we are reminded that we can be champions too! To be a real disciple of Jesus means to heroically live the Gospel each and every day! So each of us can be heroes as we live our faith. As we love one another, forgive one another, and serve one another, we are heroes and champions! A champion is one who remembers to do the basics! Watch a champion sports player, they have talent but they also do the basics of their sport, when you forget the basics, you usually fail. Are you living the basics of the faith? The fourth Joyful mystery of the Rosary is the presentation of the Lord. This is what we celebrate today! What does it mean? "And after the days of her purification, according to the Law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord" (Luke 2:22). Mary had conceived the Son of God as a virgin; she gave birth to the Savior of the World, and her virginity remained intact; through her piety and that of Saint Joseph, she would remain a virgin for her entire life. So what does it mean to refer to the "days of her purification"? Under the Old Testament Law, a woman remained impure for 40 days after the birth of a child. But Mary was not subject to the Law, because of the special circumstances of Christ's Birth. Yet she obeyed it anyway. And in doing so, she showed that a ritual concerned with the purification of the body was really a symbol for the purity of soul of the true believer. Mary and Joseph offered a sacrifice, in accordance with the Law: "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons" (Luke 2:24), to redeem the Son of God, Who needed no redemption. "The Law is made for man, not man for the Law," Christ Himself would later say, yet here is the Holy Family fulfilling the Law even though it does not apply to them. How often do we think that we don't need all the regulations and rituals of the Church! "Why do I have to go to Confession? God knows I'm sorry for my sins"; "Fasting and abstinence are manmade laws"; "If I miss Mass one Sunday, God will understand." Yet here are the Son of God and His Mother, both more pure than any of us will ever be, abiding by the Law that Christ Himself came not to abolish but fulfill. Their obedience to the Law was not lessened by their purity of soul, but made all the greater. Might we not learn from their example? If they followed the Law, shouldn t we? We re certainly not better that them! TODAY S READINGS First Reading There will come to the temple the LORD whom you seek (Malachi 3:1-4). Psalm Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord! (Psalm 24). Second Reading Jesus had to become like hisbrothers and sisters in every way to help the descendants of Abraham (Hebrews 2:14-18). Gospel The just and pious Simeon proclaims the infant Jesus to be a revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of the people Israel (Luke 2:22-40 [22-32]). FAITH SHARING... WHOLE COMMUNITY CATECHESIS Reflection: The Lord is coming, we learn, but before we meet him, he will burn away everything in our lives that would keep us from experiencing him fully. Yet, we do not have t face the Lord of Hosts alone. Jesus has become one of us in every way but sin. He has taken upon himself our sinful nature and through his Death on the Cross has made amends for the sins of all; Jesus is at our side. The Son of God approaches his people as a vulnerable baby in His mother s arms. Only Simeon and Anna, inspired by the Holy Spirit, see in the7is infant the salvation of the nations. Question of the Week: What kind of help do you need from Jesus to meet the tests that await all of us? What attitudes do you need to strip away to see the presence of God in the marginal and most vulnerable? Resolution: A sense of humility and a willingness to surrender to our Lord are powerful attitudes to prepare ourselves to stand before our God. Jesus demonstrates his humility by becoming one of us and thereby opening the gates of heaven for us to share in the divine nature of our God. Before this can happen we must place our faith in or Lord, Jesus, above all other worldly concerns. RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY "Some people argue that changing laws will not eliminate abortions. It is certainly true that a change of heart is more important than a change of law. What is forgotten, however, is that the law is the great teacher. Children grow up believing that if a practice is legal, it must be moral." --Cardinal John O Connor
3 February 2, 2014 Page 3 Youth Ministry News From Fr. Bill We got an from a Brittany asking what we mean by the baseball field banner unconditionally pro life, pro family. First of all, I hope and believe that those words on the banner are true for ALL churches which are Catholic not just Sacred Heart. I'll spend some today on our being Pro-Life. We Catholics believe that our lives are a gift from God. We believe that God is involved in the act of our being created. We know that although we get chromosomes and DNA from our parents, it is God, who knows us in the very act of conception, who loves our soul... and our very self into existence. I know some people who claim that we are not real people until we are viable that is able to exist on one's own. This is one justification for abortions... that they are not people yet. Honestly, I have never met any human under five able to survive on their own... and I dare say that there maybe adults living in their parent's basement who don't meet this standard of personhood. The Bible speaks about God knowing us in our mother's womb... and His having a mission for us even then (e.g. Psalm 139). We Catholics believe that Dr. Seuss got it right in the book Horton Hears A Who. A person is a person, no matter how small. You may not realize this, but until the 1950's this was an almost universally accepted position by ALL Christian denominations. Abortion is a crime against humanity. Life, especially the life of the innocent and defenseless, should be protected. The Unconditional part of being pro-life is most difficult for some Catholics. Although they support protecting the innocent within their mother's womb, it is much more difficult be motivated to protect the lives of those guilty of murder and other vicious crimes. We believe that life is from God and should only be taken by God. Answering evil with another evil does not make things right or bring the victim back. The church does teach that a state does have the right to defend its citizens... but as the American murder rate continues to be among the highest in the world... it would be hard to demonstrate how taking another life somehow might make our communities safer places in any situation other that crimes that are in progress or in a wartime action. So we as Catholics whether through Senior Care Facilities, Catholic Charities, Hospitals, Prison Ministries, Places for women to bear their children to full term, and all manner of works of justice and charity strive from womb to natural death to support life. Even among believers, some are slow to live their belief to the full. How many more would show up at Mass next Sunday, if we announced that the Pope would be there? How many would take time to stop by if told that $1,000 awaited their visit? How many would respond if some movie star or famous athlete invited them to a banquet? ~Fr. Tom Forrest, CSSR Will you spend one hour with Our Lord on Friday at 4PM? Please call Lupe This week s vocal Holy Hour is in 7p.m. EUCHARISTIC APOSTLES OF DIVINE MERCY The Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy will be making religious articles (rosaries, holy medals, etc.) available for a donation the fourth Sunday of every month. 5 February 2, 2014 Page 5 MISA DEL MEDIODIA, 12 P.M.
