StoreGrid Cloud Import and Export Resellers and Managed Service Providers often run into slow backup transfer rates especially if the bandwidth is low between the client and the StoreGrid Cloud Online Backup Servers. Depending up on the upload bandwidth available in the customer s site, this initial backup of large backup sets could take days, if not weeks. Or more importantly, Customers would like to restore data quickly from the StoreGrid Cloud in case of disaster recovery of their critical machines. There again the time involved in restoring the data over the wire may not be acceptable to customers. StoreGrid Cloud provides Resellers and Managed Service Providers a StoreGrid Cloud Import facility where you can run the backups from the Customers machines to a local disk and ship that disk to Amazon AWS team. Amazon AWS team will attach the disk to their Amazon Cloud AWS infrastructure and let StoreGrid team know. StoreGrid team will then import the data from the disk into the your account in StoreGrid Cloud server under the appropriate Customer and arrange for shipping back the disk to you. Similarly during restore, a service request can be created to have the backup data How does it Work
1. MSP or the Reseller sends service request through an to StoreGrid team at The should have the following details: Serial Number of the Disk you will be shipping. Make sure the disk is one of the supported devices. Approximate size of the backup data in disk. Address to which you want the disk to be shipped back 2. StoreGrid Team will reply back with a PDF file with the Signature Barcode and instructions for shipping the disk. 3. Install StoreGrid client in the machine that needs to be backed up. Configure backups to the disk that you will be shipping. You can run backups from multiple client machines into the same disk. The disk that you are shipping can have up to 16TB of data. Please note: Once the backup is completed, before detaching the drive from the client machine, make sure the backup is suspended. Here are the steps: 1. Log into client s web console page and select 'Backup -> Add Backup' from the top menu. 2. Select the Backup Type as Local Backup in Step 3 and select the external drive location for the Local Backup Location. After entering all the other backup details, save the backup schedule. 3. Run the backup, check the progress and make sure the backup runs to completion. 4. When the backup is complete, suspend the backup schedule from the Backup -> List Backup Schedules page. THIS IS IMPORTANT. 5. Disconnect the external drive from the client machine.. 4. Print out and paste the Barcode on the disk that you shipping. Follow the instructions in the PDF to ship the disk. Make sure you also ship the disk s power adapters, required cables also. 5. Once the data is imported into your account in StoreGrid Cloud by the StoreGrid team, they will let you know over with the details including the service charges incurred. You will get your disk shipped back to you from Amazon.
6. Log into the client machine web console and perform the Seed Backup Migration steps for the backups that you have imported. The resume the backup and check. Here are the steps: 1. Log into client s web console page and select 'Backup -> Seed Backup Migration' from the top menu. 2. Select (local) for Select the Backup Server that this client machine is currently backing up to. 3. From the listed backups, select the ones you have imported. 4. Click on the Migrate button to start the migration on the client machine. Make sure the migration is completed successfully. 5. Go to 'Backup -> List Backup Schedules and click on the resume action icon for the backups that you have imported. 6. The backups will then start running incremental backups at the scheduled time directly to the StoreGrid Cloud. Confirm and make sure only newly added and modified data alone is getting backed up. How much does StoreGrid Cloud Import cost Device Handling $80.00 per storage device handled. Data Loading Time $2.49 per data-loading-hour. Partial data-loading-hours are billed as full hours. Loading time depends up on the disk speed, type of files stored: large number of small files will tend to increase the load time. You can get the load time calculator here: Return Shipping US Partners If you have specified a return address within the US, there will not be any shipping charges. If you have specified a return address outside of the US, shipping charges based on your shipment destination and weight will apply.
EU Partners If you have specified a return address within Ireland, there will not be any shipping charges. If you have specified a return address outside of Ireland, shipping charges based on your shipment destination and weight will apply. When to consider StoreGrid Cloud Import StoreGrid Cloud Import is recommended when either the data size is huge or when the available bandwidth for data upload is small. Here is the recommendation from Amazon AWS: Available Internet Connection T1 (1.544Mbps) 10Mbps T3 (44.736Mbps) 100Mbps 1000Mbps When to Consider StoreGrid Cloud Import 100GB or more 600GB or more 2TB or more 5TB or more 60TB or more When should the payment be made The disk handling charge of $80 will be detected from the storage credit available in your StoreGrid Cloud account once we receive your request. If your account doesn t have enough StoreGrid Credit, your request will be rejected. The additional data loading charges will be detected after the completion of the import.
What kind of disks are supported for StoreGrid Cloud Import US Partners Item Power for External Devices Requirement US wall socket plug* Max Power Consumption 2,000Watts Interface Type esata USB 2.0 (including USB flash drives) 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch internal SATA hard drives Dimensions The maximum device size is 14 inches high by 19 inches wide by 36 inches deep (8Us in a standard 19 inch rack). Weight The maximum device weight is 50 pounds. EU Partners Item Power for External Devices Requirement UK/Ireland Plugs: BS1363* Continental Europe Plugs: Schuko (CEE7)* Kettle Lead Plugs: IEC 320/C14* Max Power Consumption 2,000Watts Interface Type esata USB 2.0 (including USB flash drives) 6.4-cm (2.5 inch) and 8.9-cm (3.5 inch) internal SATA hard drives Dimensions The maximum device size is 35 centimeters high by 48 centimeters wide by 91 centimeters deep (8Us in a standard 48 centimeter rack). Weight The maximum device weight is 22.5 kilograms.
* An adaptor must be included for plugs other than the ones supported above FAQs 1. Can I ship multiple disks in one shipment? No. A StoreGrid Cloud Import request can be done only for one disk. For multiple disks, multiple requests have to be raised. 2. Do I just ship the disk? No. Along with the disk you need to ship the cables and power adapters as well. 3. How long will the entire import process take? After the disk has arrived at the shipped address, it will take 2 working days for the data to be imported. If the data is huge and has several millions of small files, the importing time could be larger. The time taken also depends up on the disk speed. 4. Can backup data from multiple clients be imported through the same disk? Yes. You run any number of backups from multiple client machines into the same disk and import it in one shot. Like for example say you have 2 customers each having 3 client machines to be backed up. You can take the disk and attached it in each of the client machines one by one and run the backups. But make sure all the backups from the 6 clients are in the same 1/ folder in the disk: 1/clientID1/ 1/clientID2/. Just make sure the size of the data in the disk doesn t exceed 16TB 5. What is the maximum size that the shipped disk can have? 16 TB
6. Is $80 disk handling charge negotiable? No. StoreGrid Cloud Import uses Amazon s AWS import services and that is the cost that Amazon would charge Vembu. Vembu doesn t make money out of it. 7. What happens after the import is completed? The disk will be shipped back to you. StoreGrid Cloud team will notify you through that the data has been imported. a. You can log into your StoreGrid Cloud account and verify it. b. Log into the client machine web console and run the Seed Backup Migration steps for the backups c. Incremental backups from the client will now run directly to StoreGrid Cloud. Verify and confirm that only changed and newly added files are backed up during the incremental backups
