Hazardous Weather

Hazardous Weather

Hazardous Weather Like so many others across the region and country our thoughts are with those affected by recent tornadoes in Oklahoma and North Central Texas. Unfortunately though, the peak of severe weather season is just beginning for our region. In fact, there a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (generally in the afternoon and evening hours each day). The primary hazards with any storms are expected to be large hail and strong winds and we are not expecting any significant tornado threat. However, we encourage everyone in the Panhandles to review their severe weather safety plan and stay tuned to the latest forecast as things can change. For more information on severe weather preparedness check A refreshing cold front will drop temperatures back to slightly below seasonal norms today. There will be a slight chance of rain showers and perhaps a thunderstorm mainly across the north this morning before we return to partly sunny skies this afternoon. Highs will range from the 70s to lower 80s. Also, we are proud to offer a severe weather spotter training class tonight. This is the first time delivering via a webinar thus allowing you to attend from your home or business. For more information, see and click on the link at the top of the page.

Scattered thunderstorms...some of which will likely reach severe levels...will be possible across the Heartland and Northwest Hill Country this afternoon and evening. Other storms will be more isolated farther west near Abilene and San Angelo, but if they develop, they may reach severe levels as well. Hazardous Weather

Hazardous Weather A significant severe weather outbreak is possible across North and Central Texas later today, including the DFW Metroplex and Waco, Temple and Killeen areas. This image shows forecast or simulated radar returns in an effort to convey how we think this event will unfold across the area today. 1. From sunrise to noon, we expect a line of storms to move south from Oklahoma and cross the red river shortly after sunrise. This line will continue east towards the I- 35 corridor and I-20 corridor west of I-35 through noon. These storms will likely NOT be severe, although we will be watching these storms closely through the morning hours. 2. The line of mainly elevated storms is expected to more or less dissipate and scattered supercell thunderstorms are expected to develop near the DFW area and southwest right around noon. These storms may become severe quickly after developing. 3. From noon to 4 pm, supercell thunderstorms are expected to mature, and will be in a good environment to produce tornadoes. This is the primary time we expect a high threat for very large hail and tornadoes. These storms could affect the DFW Metroplex and heavily populated Waco, Killeen, Temple areas as well. 4. The scattered supercells are expected to combine into one large line by the late afternoon hours. Once in a line, these storms will accelerate to the southeast away from North and Central Texas. The line of storms will be capable of producing 70 mph straight line winds once developed.

Hazardous Weather Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon into tonight as an upper level disturbance approaches Texas. A few storms could become severe with large hail and damaging winds. A weak frontal boundary could provide additional thunderstorm focus to bring additional isolated threats for tornadoes and locally heavy downpours of 1 to 2 inches. The chance for strong to severe thunderstorms will be highest between 3 pm and 3 am. Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms capable of large hail and damaging winds will likely develop to the west of the region this afternoon and move east. Severe thunderstorms will be possible mainly north of the Interstate 10 corridor late this afternoon through tonight. The higher risk of severe storms will be for areas mainly north of a Caldwell to Huntsville to Groveton line. The storms as they move into the are should change from a hail and damaging wind threat to just a damaging wind threat during the evening hours. The storms should be weakening after midnight as they move into a more stable atmosphere. Rainfall of inches will be possible with a few isolated amounts of 2 to 3 inches associated with the stronger storms.

Hazardous Weather Another warm and breezy day expected today. Most of the week will be dry, however there is a chance for thunderstorms Tonight and Wednesday, mainly for western and northern portions of the area. High temperatures will generally be in the 90s and upper 80s with lows in the 70s through much of the week. Persistence is the word for our forecast with hazy and humid conditions continuing today. Breezy southeast winds...20 to 25 mph...will develop by late morning across the eastern half of the region. Morning clouds will give way to sunny skies out west with a few more clouds closer to the coast. Afternoon highs will range from around 80 degrees on area beaches to 100 degrees around Falcon Lake.

Hazardous Weather Dry west flow aloft will keep the Borderland sunny, with temperatures near normal. Winds light northwest in the morning, will become west 10 mph in the afternoon. Cooler today behind a cold front that moved through overnight.
