13 FTTdP Issues REVERSE POWERING Reverse Powering Brings a guaranteed benefit to the Telecom Operators in terms of their energy bills Is not cheating Customers: as a matter of fact, it s not a different situation from Customer s powering ISDN NTs, ONTs, xdsl modems/routers/iads or even IP-TV STBs Power requirements of hybrid NT are to be kept as low as possible, of course The most (only) viable solution is very much the same used by PSTN in the last 100 years (or more): applying a DC voltage to the loop DC Reverse Powering will conflict with POTS signaling (eg. DC powering and ringing voltages from CO, on-hook, off-hook conditions) While there are several ways to keep POTS and Reverse Powering together the general agreed assumption is that FTTdP will be associated to the availability of a VoIP-only voice service to Customers 13

14 FTTdP Issues REVERSE POWERING Safety of Information technology equipment (general): EN/IEC PSTN terminals/interfaces: ETSI TBR 021, ETSI ES , ETSI Reverse Power Feeding: EN/IEC , ETSI ES , ETSI TR , ETSI TR Elements to be considered (from alle the above documents) PSTN Terminals must be tested up to 100Vdc Up to 60Vdc are not generally regarded as hazardous under dry conditions for an area of contact equivalent to a human hand Typical DC voltages in PSTN (sourced from batteries located in the CO): nominal voltage of -48V (and -60V) and a range of -40,5 Vdc to -57 Vdc Maximum power available from a Telecommunication network should be limited to 15VA POTS copper wiring is generally considered a TNV-1 circuit (ie. max 60 Vdc, exposed to overvoltages of Telecommunications networks) 200m/0,4 mm Launch voltage 60V End-line voltage 50V Figure from ETSI TR

15 FTTdP Issues COPPER COUPLING TWO TECHNOLOGIES SUITABLE TO FTTdP, VDSL2 and G.FAST VDSL2 standardized in 2006 VDSL2 chipsets shipped in volumes VDSL2 Profile 30a offers aggregated data rates of 250Mbps with a 100Mbps symmetric service resembling most of nowadays FTTH services DP vs Cabinet (need for DPBO) VDSL2 modems, supporting 17a&30a, already deployed in FTTCab allow easy upselling once FTTdP is in place G.FAST standardization in QI- 14 G.FAST chipsets expected in Late 14 G.FAST targets aggregated data rates exceeding 500MBps, overtaking most of nowadays FTTH services, filling the gap between copper and fiber G.FAST can start above 17 MHz VDSL2 modems in current FTTCab architecture must be substituted in case of FTTdP-G.FAST Relative computational complexity of the different DSL flavors Timmers et alt., Proceedings from ACCESS 2011 Relative memory complexity of the different DSL flavors 15

18 FTTdP Issues INSTALLATION IN THE HOME NETWORK A SUCCESSFUL SOLUTION for both the customers and the carrier needs installation timing to be: SHORT PREDICTABLE THREE installation steps can be foreseen Hybrid NT at DP: technician always needed Connection between DP and Customer s home wiring over existing copper pair: NO ACTIVITY IN FTTdP Power Injector in Customer s home wiring: self-install The best option is to handle the whole installation without the need of scheduling an engineer appointment at the customer s home; this will avoid: Hassle for the customer (4 hours appointment, need to get time away from work ) Cost for the carrier FTTdP (without POTS regeneration) allows an un-managed install First the Technician installs the hybrid NT at a DP Then the Customer plugs in the Power Injector The two activities do not need to be synchronous, just cascaded 18

19 FTTdP Issues INSTALLATION IN THE HOME NETWORK UN-MANAGED INSTALL SCENARIO: VDSL2/G.FAST, NO POTS Installation can be easily deployed without the need for an engineer appointment Voice services are provided through VoIP and so using FXS ports on the VDSL2/G.FAST CPE / IAD ANY PHONE, FAX OR DEVICE MUST BE CONNECTED TO ONE OF THE PORTS OF THE VDSL2/G.FAST IAD ANY OTHER SOCKET INSIDE THE HOME NETWORK (IF PRESENT) IS NOT WORKING AND USELESS ANYWAY BUILDING HOME EXTRA SOCKET (DO NOT USE!!!) 23 Conclusions EGGS AND HENS (Western) Europe is STRUGGLING to reach a critical-mass of FTTH subscribers Without CHANGING approaches, DIFFERENT results will be hardly achieved FTTdP is DIFFERENT FTTdP could be more mature, of course BUT Why Choosing between having an egg (100 Mbps) today (copper) OR an hen (1Gbps) tomorrow (fiber), when you can have both? FTTdP/VDSL2 = The EGG FTTdP/G.FAST = The HEN 23

26 FTTdP Issues POTS SUPPORT ANALOGUE Voiceband signals (and any other in-band signal, eg. FSK) pass-through Signaling between DP and Customer s LLEP (eg. for Ringing, Off-Hook) is carried by dedicated off-band carriers DIGITAL Digital signal between DP and Customer s LLEP with appropriate framing carrying sampled/digitised voiceband (and any other in-band tones, eg FSK) and a specific protocol for signaling IN THEORY, BOTH WORK FINE AS LONG AS THEY ARE COMPATIBLE WITH VDSL2 / G.FAST SPECTRUM G.FAST Starts above 2.2 MHz VDSL2 Starts at 138 khz, if U0 band is not used - Starts at 25 khz, if U0 band is used U0 band support is not used in 30a Profile 26

27 FTTdP Issues POTS SUPPORT ANALOGUE could be based on identifying three carriers (based on Country-specific standards) providing signaling to/from DP and LLEP (for upstream and downstream signaling) POTS Band xdsl Band DIGITAL would imply implementation of VDSL2 over a_digital_signal like ISDN kbps line rate, kbps line rate (or 128 kbps line rate, if TC-PAM 4 is used) thus leveraging well-know technologies and widely available chipsets 4K 11K 18K22K32K SPECTRUM on the BUILDING LOOP Figure from ETSI TR DIGITAL WITH ISDN ( VDSL2 over ISDN ) Fully standardized and already deployed (eg Germany) ISDN Silicon available since decades, not exactly a technology with a bright future today NOT ALLOWED everywhere (eg. Italy neither ADSL over ISDN is permitted); change of mind by National Regulators needed DIGITAL WITH SHDSL ( SHDSL below VDSL2 ) Brand new approach SHDSL Silicon available and stable Consensus/Approval to be gained by xlecs and National Regulators Line coding currently mandated by ITU-T and ETSI for SHDSL (TC-PAM 8 for US asymmetric, TC-PAM 16/32) would allow a minimum line rate of 200kbps, which could be compatible with VDSL2 starting from 138 khz Additional implementations (eg based on TC-PAM 4/8) allow even lower minimum line rates (eg 136 kbps) IN CASE OF G.FAST, NO ISSUE IS FORESEEN DUE TO G.FAST SPECTRUM OCCUPYING FREQUENCIES ABOVE 2.2 MHz (or 8, 12, 17, 30) 27
