High School Catalog A Message from Our Director Schools used to be just another kind of factory. Just as the local car factory took in raw materials and created finished products, so the local school was supposed to take raw materials children and put out the finished product of the educated student. But just as Henry Ford s Model T came in any color you wanted, as long as you only wanted black, so the factory model of schools could not accommodate the infinite variety of children s needs and abilities. That s where homeschooling comes in. Homeschooling is education for the 21st century. It is the education that breaks away from the constrictions of the Industrial Age and moves forward into the Information Age. In the Industrial Age, products were mass produced so that everything was the same. In the Information Age, we have the era of mass customization. Lots of products can be produced, but each can be tailored to the specific needs of a single user. That is exactly what homeschooling does takes the best of what has been thought, written, and discovered, and delivers it in a way that is customized to each student. Each student learns and succeeds at his or her own rate, rather than being sped up or slowed down by thirty other students in the class. Homeschooling is the cutting edge of education, but it is not some new fad. It is a method of education that has proved itself, time and time again, for centuries. By any measure, but especially by standardized test scores, homeschooling has shown itself to be the best method of education available today. We believe that homeschooling with Seton is the best homeschooling there is. Seton has been providing educational services to homeschoolers for nearly thirty years. Seton provides not only lesson plans, but also counseling by phone and , so you know that you will never be lost in a course without someone to help you. Seton s counselors for subjects such as math, science, and languages afford you a level of expertise and personal attention you would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. High school students have their whole lives and the whole world in front of them. You are taking the first step on the road to a great adventure. But traveling alone isn t easy. On any journey, it s great to have a guide who knows the way, and who has brought many others safely to their destination. That s what Seton has done for thousands of students through the years. That s what Seton can do for you. We re headed the same way. Let s travel together. Director, Seton Home Study School Pope John Paul II taught us that parents are the first and the most important educators of their own children. This sums up very well the philosophy of Seton Home Study School. We are here to assist parents with their educational duties. We help by providing counseling by phone, message boards, fax, and . We also provide daily lesson plans, testing services, books, software, videos, online testing, online audio lectures, and other educational materials for Catholic homeschooling. Parents are the first and the most important educators of their own children, and they also possess a fundamental competence in this area; they are educators because they are parents Letter to Families, Gratissimam Sane 2 Seton Home Study School (866)

High School Catalog A Letter from the Admissions Directors of our Dear Homeschooling Families, As the Admissions Directors for these Catholic colleges and universities, we want you to know that homeschooled students are welcome at our schools and are an important part of our identity. For many of us, up to 50% of our incoming classes are composed of homeschoolers. We encourage all homeschooling students to research our schools and apply if interested. Preparing for College In general, we find that Catholic homeschoolers are well prepared for the spiritual and academic demands of higher education. Their Christ-centered academic background allows them to excel above their public and private school counterparts in many ways. Most of our schools recognize salutatorians and valedictorians; we have found that many so honored over the past five years were homeschooled. While we encourage Catholic homeschooling in general, it is important for us to note that sometimes it may be of more benefit to an incoming freshman if he was enrolled in a structured homeschooling program in high school. In our experience, certain students can be better prepared to enter college if they were enrolled in an official homeschooling program. The accountability demanded by a program can be an asset to a college freshman. College courses are detail-oriented, with professors assigning specific work to be accomplished outside of class, requiring students to order their time well. Students who have successfully completed a cohesive high school program may be able to budget their time more efficiently. Additionally, the structure of a program can help students flourish in a more traditional academic environment. The transition to college can be a difficult time, and anything that you can do to make it easier is well worth it. We wish you much success in your continuing high school education, and hope to hear from you in the near future. Enroll Online at 3

High School Catalog ACT and SAT Tests Please contact the college of your choice, in your sophomore or junior year of high school if possible, to determine which test they require. Seton s high school guidance counselors can help you with any questions you have about college, vocational schools, technical schools, and military enlistment. The major testing companies, such as those that administer the ACT and SAT, also maintain websites which can help you. SAT website: ACT website: Admission Requirements For admission to the high school diploma program, Seton requires the following: completing Seton placement tests, and a transcript of any previous high school courses. A copy of previous report cards showing high school courses and grades earned should be sent to Seton with the application. This will help to determine courses needed, and will suffice until the previous school sends the official transcript. Official Transcripts with Application Students transferring into Seton are required to submit a transcript of previous high school courses. This helps the counselors determine the proper courses needed for graduation. If you do not have an official transcript, a report card or homeschool transcript will suffice. At the time of enrollment, transcripts can be ed to or faxed to Special Services A child with learning difficulties or attention problems may need some modification to a standard curriculum. Sometimes these can be minor adaptations, such as presenting lessons orally. Sometimes a different book format may be required. An individualized curriculum which works with the student s strengths in order to develop the weaker areas is the best teaching approach for a student with learning difficulties. For more information, contact the special services department via at or by phone at Diploma Requirements The Seton Diploma Seton Home Study School grants three accredited diplomas. Two diplomas are preparatory for college: the Academic Diploma and the Advanced Academic Diploma. The third, a General Diploma, is designed for students who are not planning to apply to a fouryear college. These options are in line with most high schools in the United States. Differences of Diplomas College bound students are strongly advised to work towards the Academic or Advanced Academic Diplomas. Today s colleges are looking for high school graduates who have completed a strong academic high school curriculum. Non-Diploma Students If you are enrolling only for supplemental courses, or do not intend to receive a diploma through Seton, please let us know at the time of enrollment. You can change your status at anytime by speaking to a high school counselor. Transfer Students Transferring Outside Credits to Seton Seton generally accepts transfer credits from other schools, though not all credits apply towards graduation requirements. A high school counselor will evaluate submitted transcripts to determine which courses will transfer. Questions about high school transcripts and transfer credits can be directed to the Guidance Department at (540) Transfer of Credits from Seton Since Seton is an accredited school, your school should accept our credits. However, it is up to you to seek approval from your high school. Credits Needed for Transfer Students To comply with our accreditation requirements, students must take at least 25% of Seton s required credits to receive a diploma, regardless of the amount of credits earned from other schools. This would be a minimum 5.5 credits for the Academic and General diplomas, and 6.5 for the Advanced Academic Diploma. 6 Seton Home Study School (866)

High School Catalog Find out more at the premier, online, Catholic magazine for Catholic Homeschoolers Honor Code As a Catholic organization, Seton Home Study School has always had a code of conduct. We all know this code as the Ten Commandments. We have always relied and continue to rely on you, the parent-teachers at home, to ensure that the students live and learn according to the Commandments, even as we work to infuse our teaching materials with the faith and morals of the Catholic Church. Over the years, Seton has included an Honor Pledge on some of the courses and/or assignments the students are required to submit. However, owing to a recommendation by our accreditation committee that we incorporate an honor code in all our courses, and following in the footsteps of the Catholic schools of our diocese, Seton Home Study School is implementing an Honor Pledge based on the Arlington Diocesan honor pledge. The Seton Home Study School Honor Pledge is as follows: On my honor as a child of God, I state that I have not received unauthorized help with this assignment. Beginning January 1st, 2014, all students in grades seven through twelve will be required to write or validate this pledge on all submitted assignments. Seton Home Study School trusts its families, of course. In a culture where honesty means less and less, it behooves us as Catholics to be explicit and conscientious about living virtuously and to set an example of honorable behavior. Full details of the Code of Conduct and Honor Code will be published at We thank you in advance for your support in this matter. Director, Seton Home Study School While Seton offers counselors to help both parents and students with the curriculum, experience has shown that Seton high school students obtain the best learning results when their parents are involved with their students on a regular basis. Parents who monitor the lesson plans, review assignments, discuss the readings, and assess written assignments, motivate and inspire their children to higher levels of achievement. 8 Seton Home Study School (866)

High School Catalog Seton Graduation Seton holds an annual high school graduation ceremony for graduating seniors during the Memorial Day weekend. Students must meet eligibility requirements in order to graduate. The Seton Graduation has grown from a small beginning into a grand event, with over 100 graduates and their families in attendance, as well as major speakers such as Raymond Arroyo, Rep. Robert Dornan, and Dr. Ray Guarendi. Besides the graduation itself on Saturday afternoon, the graduation includes an entire weekend of events including a Friday afternoon pizza party, a Friday evening reception (hosted by Christendom College), and a Saturday evening dance. Information about the graduation is sent to all 12th grade students, and posted on Seton s website in January of each year. You can look back on your Catholic high school years at Seton as a worthwhile journey that has strengthened you in knowledge, understanding, spirituality, and self-motivation. Now it is your task to carry this hope out into the world. Hope in the lives of each one us is like a beacon on a hill. Even in the darkness of our secular society, others can see that beacon of hope, and understand that, through perseverance, we all can reach our eternal goal. 16 High School Catalog Testimonials Catholic Leaders Too often children are not being taught authentic Catholicism in parish schools, but if the parents put them in public schools, the atmosphere will be much worse. Years ago I could offer them little comfort. Now I can suggest home study courses such as Seton School offers. I would say to parents deliberating a decision for home study, Courage, God will give you the necessary graces to perform your duty as primary educators. Father Robert J. Fox Author, Leader of Fatima Youth Retreats May I congratulate you, and the founders of Seton Home Study School, on the Catholic content and vision of the courses you provide. This Pontifical Council for the Family will be interested to follow the future development of your programs, especially in the way they reinforce family life. Bishop Jean Francois Arrighi Former Vice-President, Pontifical Council for the Family, Rome Seton Home Study School is in direct response to the concerns of Our Holy Father and the Holy See. It is in the forefront of the battle to preserve the Catholic Faith and Family Life, aiming not only to teach children their school subjects permeated by the Faith, but also to help parents themselves grow in the Faith as they teach their children, and accept their responsibility as the Church wishes. I firmly believe that if parents enroll their children in Seton Home Study School, they and their children, in the church of the home, will be strengthened in the faith and in their family life. Father John Hardon Author of The Catholic Catechism We are living in an age when parents are systematically being dispossessed of their children by public and private schools. My wife and I chose home education in the realization that we cannot give our children to God unless they first belong to us. Seton Home Study School offers Catholic parents the opportunity to exercise responsibility for their children s academic formation and prepares them for college. Damian P. Fedoryka Former President of Christendom College The Seton Home Study School represents one of the most promising developments in modern Catholic education. Catholics United for the Faith, as an international association of Catholic laity vitally concerned with Catechesis is pleased to commend Seton Home Study School for its efforts to assist parents with the intellectual and spiritual formation of their children. It was written to give these businessmen a better understanding of the three basic accounting documents: the Balance Sheet, the Cash Statement, and the Income Statement, or Profit / Loss Statement (P&L). The book follows a young entrepreneur as he learns his business with a lemonade stand. The textbook includes many handson exercises and an answer key. Seton has added several supplements in the lesson plan to make some areas more clear. This is not a bookkeeping course. There are no journal entries or book closings to worry about in this course. Once you have learned keyboarding, researching on the Internet, sending s to family and friends, and posting messages on the MySeton message boards will be an easier process. The textbook is Keyboarding Skills by Diana Hanbury King, who is the author of the Writing Skills series of books. The method of instruction in the book involves three of your senses: seeing, hearing, and touching. The first half of the course uses Small Basic to teach the basic concepts of programming. Because Small Basic is an interactive programming environment, the student will receive immediate feedback and more easily learn fundamental concepts. After learning the basic concepts in Small Basic, the course switches to the graphical environment of Visual Basic Express. Visual Basic Express is based upon the.net programming system from Microsoft, which is a very popular Windows-based programming tool. Students will learn such concepts as structured programming, object-oriented programming, event-driven programming, binary numbers, branching logic, using functions, arrays, constants, forms and controls, and programming for the Internet. 18 High School Curriculum English Courses English 9 English 10 ENG101 CREDIT: 1 PREREQUISITES: None This course covers principles of literary analysis. Students carefully analyze a work of fiction, while learning literary elements, such as characterization, conflict, and theme. Other literary devices covered include point of view, foreshadowing, tone, and symbolism. The study of poetry is introduced, as students are taught to discover the deeper meaning of poems. 19 High School Curriculum English 11 English 12 ENG301 CREDIT: 1 PREREQUISITES: English 10 The main objective of this course is to improve the student s ability to analyze, interpret, and critique literature. Further, students learn and perfect the skill of writing an interpretive essay. We especially emphasize works of literature written from a Catholic point of view, and students are brought to a deeper understanding of the Catholic view of reality and human nature. Different types of literature are read throughout the course so that the student may sample each of the different genres: the novel, poetry, narrative poetry, and the play. TEXTS: The Song at the Scaffold, The Ballad of the White Horse, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, The Scarlet Letter, The Screwtape Letters, A Man for All Seasons ONLINE: Video ENG401 CREDIT: 1 PREREQUISITES: English 11 This is a survey course of British literature that covers the great works of the British literary tradition. Using a Catholic British literature anthology, students study the chronology of poetry and prose from the author of Beowulf to Chesterton. The works are carefully studied, encouraging textually based interpretation that captures the insights of the great British authors. The textbook begins with the literature of the early Anglo- Saxon period and continues with the Medieval, Renaissance, and Elizabethan periods. The poetry of Donne, Milton, and Gray are studied, followed by poetry from both the Romantic and Victorian era. The anthology concludes with selections from the Catholic literary revival in England, including works by Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and Hilaire Belloc. In addition to the textbook, students read longer works from authors such as Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and T.S. Eliot. The lesson plans provide analytical questions and discussions. TEXTS: Prose & Poetry of England, Pride and Prejudice, Murder in the Cathedral, Robinson Crusoe, Macbeth Students choose 4 additional titles from the list below, only one per quarter (not provided*). 20 High School Curriculum Grammar and Composition American Literature ENG121 CREDIT: 1 PREREQUISITES: None ENG312 CREDIT: 1 Juniors & Seniors Only The first semester of this course is spent studying grammar, while the second semester is devoted to composition. The objective is first to cover the basic rudiments of the English language before moving on to their practical application in the writing of compositions. The grammar portion reviews basic grammar concepts such as the parts of speech, and then teaches more advanced concepts, such as participles and gerunds, as well as phrases, clauses, and sentences. Sentence diagramming is incorporated into the first semester. The semester of composition begins with a review of the basic characteristics of a good paragraph, including topic sentences, unity and coherence in a paragraph, and the use of relevant supporting details. Students write longer compositions while studying the different kinds of composition: descriptive, narrative, expository, compare and contrast, and persuasive. TEXT: High School Grammar for Catholic Students, Video Vocabulary ENG131 CREDIT: 1/2 PREREQUISITES: None The purpose of this one-semester course is to help the student learn vocabulary for personal conversation, for college papers, to understand what is read, and to score well on college entrance exams. The text-workbook teaches the student new words from context, building vocabulary through central ideas, and words derived from Greek, Latin, French, Anglo-Saxon, Italian, and Spanish. TEXT: Vocabulary for the College-Bound Student Shakespeare ELE406 CREDIT: 1/2 Juniors & Seniors only This is a one-semester course concentrating on the plays of the classic English playwright William Shakespeare. In many ways, these plays show us how Catholic thinking, traditions, and culture have been reflected in the life and literature of the past. This is a survey of American literature, using a Catholic anthology. The textbook chronologically covers major periods in American history by tracing the development of American literature and culture. In keeping with Seton s curriculum, the course stresses analytical thinking and appreciation of the literary merit of each of the works. Book analyses are written in each quarter. The first section Colonial Outlines includes mostly travel narratives and letters from early explorers and missionaries such as Christopher Columbus and Blessed Junipero Serra. Revolutionary Designs includes political pieces by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. National Patterns begins the formal American literary tradition, including great American authors like Irving, Longfellow, Hawthorne, and Poe. The book continues through the frontier period and finishes with selections from the 20 th century.
