1 Medical Teams International is currently recruiting dental professionals to volunteer for shortterm international development teams. As this recruitment sheet is constantly updated, please check our website ( for a list of our most current volunteer opportunities. Projected costs typically includes airfare, food, lodging, ground transportation, and medical evacuation insurance, unless otherwise noted. If you are selected for a team, we can offer you fundraising information. Although Medical Teams International does not have faith requirements for volunteers, some of our in-country partners request that we send Christian volunteers, which is noted where applicable in the country summaries below. These are teams with immediate needs for dental professionals to travel in the next days. Some countries have strict processes for authorization and require extra documentation and time to coordinate. VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS The first step to volunteering with Medical Teams International is to apply. All the forms can be accessed on our website at: How to Volunteer. 2 Africa Cameroon Mbingo Baptist Hospital Medical Doctors and Surgeons are needed at Mbingo Baptist Hospital near Bamenda, Cameroon. Volunteers will be fully integrated into the work of the hospital providing surgery, direct patient care, taking call, and providing lecture and hands-on training to surgical and internal medicine residents as part of the CIMS training program. Mbingo Hospital serves people of all faith backgrounds but requests that volunteers be Christian. The departure dates are flexible and can be anytime during the year Maximum of two people per team. Volunteers will be fully integrated into the work of the hospital providing surgery, primary care, taking call, mentoring, and providing hands-on and lecture training as needed. Banso Hospital serves people of all faith backgrounds but requests that volunteers be Christians that are willing to also spiritually mentor Cameroonian physicians. 3 DR Congo Heal Africa Hospital in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo has a need for Pediatricians, Cardiologists, Pathologists, Cardiothoracic surgeons, Urologists, and Spine Neurosurgeons. Volunteers will provide direct service delivery and will help improve the skills of local physicians and nurses through specialized training. Departure dates are flexible, depending on volunteer schedule. October December, weeks Emergency Physicians Pediatricians Cardiologists Pathologist Cardiothoracic surgeon Urologist Spine Neurosurgeon $3,800 per person Liberia (urgent) Medical teaching professionals are needed to provide support to our Liberia staff who have been so dedicated to making Liberia Ebola free. This team will focus on growing the capacity of our MTI Liberia office and clinical staff in three different counties. Volunteers will provide three different types of trainings, depending on expertise and travel dates. They are the following: Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illnesses (IMNCI), Basic Life Saving Skills (BLSS), and Home Based Maternal & Newborn Care (HBMNC). No minors, please. Previous international medical experience in Africa required. As soon as possible 4+ weeks Family Practice Physicians Pediatricians OB/GYNs Nurse Practitioners Physician Assistants Nurse Midwives Registered Nurses $2,500 per person South Sudan (urgent) Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care team is needed for teaching, mentoring, coaching of local health workers in CEmONC (Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care) Project in collaboration with World Vision. Volunteers will work alongside national staff at Kuajok Hospital in Warrap State, South Sudan. Ability to work in conflict affected and low resource environment. Experience with emergency obstetric care. Previous international medical experience required, preferably in Africa. There will be a 5-day security training pre-departure. Revised 10/6/15 Page 3
4 South Sudan, continued As soon as possible 4-6 weeks Midwives OB/GYNs $1,500 - $1,800 per person, depending on airfare Uganda Physicians and Nurses are needed to provide direct services, support and hands-on training to local staff at MTI clinics in refugee resettlements in SW and NW (West Nile), Uganda. As a member of a 2-person team, you will work alongside Ugandan clinical staff to improve health services for the refugee and local populations. Sending two teams per month, one team will work in SW, while the other will be focused in NW. The current project focuses on improving referral services, prevention of disease outbreaks, improved quality of health services, strengthening community capacity, maternal and reproductive health services, and improved clinical response to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV). This team supports MTI s projects in partnership with UNHCR and US Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Experience working in Africa is strongly preferred. April 1, 2016 April 29, 2016 May 27, 2016 June 24, weeks 1 Physician or Nurse Practitioner (family practice, pediatrics or OB/GYN), paired with 1 Physician Assistant, Nurse Midwife or RN $2,150 per person Uganda Surgical Teams are needed at MTI clinics in Nakivale and Oruchinga refugee resettlements in SW Uganda. As a member of this 6-7 person team, volunteers will work alongside Ugandan surgeons and medical staff to treat such illnesses as fistula, hernias and splenomegaly. Volunteers will also provide hands-on training and mentoring to clinical staff. This team supports MTI s projects in partnership with UNHCR and US Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Previous international medical experience required, preferably in Africa. Departure dates are flexible. 5 Zambia Maternal and Newborn Health Care team is needed for teaching, mentoring and coaching local health workers in labor and delivery, post-natal and newborn care for a BEmONC (Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care) Project in collaboration with World Vision. Volunteers will work alongside national staff in rural health facilities in Pemba District, Southern Province of Zambia. Ability to work in low resource environment. Experience with emergency obstetric care. Previous international medical experience required, preferably in Africa. February 2016 and following months 3-4 week minimum, up to 3 months OB/GYN s or MD/Surgeons experienced in OB and C-Section delivery Nurse Midwives Labor & Delivery Nurses $4,000 per person Asia Cambodia Pediatric Medical Teaching teams are needed to work with MTI s partner, Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. AHC is a premier pediatric teaching and referral hospital where volunteer professionals provide training in English to the staff of this hospital in various topics. Opportunities for direct care may be possible, but mainly teachers are needed to help local staff increase their knowledge so they can provide better care to the children in Cambodia. Departure dates are flexible within the month. Training schedule listed below. 6 Cambodia Emergency Medical Service volunteers are needed to conduct EMS trainings in 8 Cambodian provinces. The team will provide comprehensive participatory training utilizing a Training of Trainers (ToT) paradigm alongside MTI staff and Khmer counterparts. Teaching is mostly participatory by use of hands-on demonstrations and some lecture. Teaching modules will be progressive. Subjects on one trip will include: rapid assessment & packaging; airway and trauma management; basic/advanced life support; mass casualty planning EMS systems development. Subjects on second trip will include: child birth, postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation and medical ailments. Team size can be 1-3. Additional training dates will be determined later in Professionals must have at least 3-years of practical field experience and some teaching/training experience. March 1, 2016 April 1, 2016 May December, days (1 week teaching) 16 days (2 weeks teaching) Paramedics Nurses Doctors $2,500 - $3,000 per person Cambodia Nurse Midwife Training teams are needed to help train Khmer nurse midwife students. Our partner is a private Christian University on the Cambodian coast. Volunteers are responsible for creating their own lesson plans from a syllabus provided by the university. They will stay in campus housing at the university with the other instructors. Departure dates are flexible. One to two people per team. 7 Eurasia Moldova Optometry teams are needed to work in rural villages surrounding Chisinau, the capitol of Moldova. These families lack access to an optometrist and do not have funds to purchase expensive and life changing eye glasses. Teams are needed to address basic eye health needs, provide eye exams and distribute eye glasses. Team size and travel dates to be determined. Spring week Optometrists Optometric Technicians $2,700 - $3,000 per person Moldova Rehabilitation Therapy teams are needed to work in placement centers and in private homes in and around Chisinau, Romania. Teams will help create rehabilitation plans for children with physical and mental disabilities who otherwise do not receive this type of care. Departure dates are flexible. Spring weeks Pediatric Physical Therapists Occupational Therapists Speech Therapists Behavior Therapists $2,700 - $3,000 per person Romania Rehabilitation Therapy teams are needed to work in placement centers and in private homes in and around Chisinau, Romania. Teams will help create rehabilitation plans for children with physical and mental disabilities who otherwise do not receive this type of care. Team size and travel dates to be determined. 8 Latin America & Caribbean El Salvador Ophthalmology team will serve with our partner ASAPROSAR in Santa Ana, El Salvador. The team will provide eye surgeries for individuals affected by cataract, strabismus and pterigium. Travel dates to be determined and have flexibility in scheduling. January December, days 1 Ophthalmologist 1 Anesthesiologist 1 Recovery Room Nurse, or 1 Surgical Technician $1,600 - $1,900 per person Haiti Physical and Occupational therapy teams needed to work with our Advantage Program in Les Cayes, Haiti. Volunteers will work alongside our Haitian staff to provide direct physical and occupational therapy, prepare patients for, create and/or fit prosthetics and orthotics. Volunteers should be prepared for a wide variety of patient types. Settings may include our own clinic, local hospitals, or home visits. Departure dates have flexibility within the month they are scheduled. Team size will be 2-4; must have 1 Physical Therapist per team; a combination of other specialties is ideal. May 12, 2016 June 18, 2016 August 13, days 1 Physical Therapist Occupational Therapist Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Physical Therapist Assistant $1,800 - $2,000 per person Haiti EMERGENCY MEDICINE TRAINING TEAMS are needed to provide emergency medicine training at Centre Medical Beraca in Port-Au-Paix, Haiti. The first two volunteer teams will provide intensive training in basic emergency medical skills for Beraca s emergency department clinicians, a group of 4 doctors, and 4 nurses. Particular skills include trauma treatment and management, basic life support, and mass casualty planning. The two following teams will provide continuing medical education and follow up training to support the work of the first two teams. Must have some training or adult education experience. 9 Haiti EMS, continued May September, days ER Doctors ER Nurses Paramedics $2,500 per person Haiti TWO ANESTHESIOLOGY TRAINING TEAMS are needed to provide anesthesiology training at Centre Medical Beraca in Port-Au-Paix, Haiti. The training will help improve the skills of the existing anesthesiologist and teach new skills to additional nursing staff. Travel dates are flexible within Team size to be determined. January December, days Anesthesiologists CRNAs $1,800 - $2,000 per person Haiti FIVE OBSTETRICAL/GYNECOLOGICAL TRAINING TEAMS are needed to serve at Centre Medical Beraca in Port de Paix. These teams will provide training to local nurses, both through formal training and side-by-side practice. Must have prior training or adult education experience. Travel dates are flexible within One to three people per team. January - September days OB/GYNs Nurse Midwives Labor & Delivery Nurses $1,800 $2,000 per person Haiti ONE ULTRASOUND TRAINING TEAM is needed to serve with Centre Medical Beraca, a hospital in northern Haiti. The team will be providing training to clinical staff (physicians and nurses) various ultrasound skills to improve services, diagnosis, and treatment offered. Team size of two. 10 Haiti Ultrasound, continued February 17, March 3 or June 16, days Ultrasound Technicians $1,800 $2,000 per person Honduras ONE ULTRASOUND/X-RAY TRAINING TEAM with expertise in mammography, obstetrical and gynecological, and renal applications are needed to provide training to our partner PREDISAN s radiology team in Catacamas, Honduras. This team follows an assessment team so some foundational information about the clinic is available. This will be the first team of a series of training teams so team applicants should feel comfortable training adult learners, and should be comprised of one ultrasound technician and/or one radiologist and an x-ray technician who will do an assessment of existing knowledge and practice. This team will, in conjunction with MTI staff, may need to design the curriculum prior to traveling. Size of team to be determined. Departure dates are flexible. January December, days Ultrasound Technicians X-ray Technicians Radiologists $1,500 $1,800 per person Honduras ONE ALCOHOL AND DRUG THERAPY TRAINING TEAM with expertise in family therapy will train 20 students and 15 personnel of our partner PREDISAN ( in methods of family therapy and life-project design. Location is Catacamas, Honduras. Travel dates are flexible. Team size can be 1 to 5. 11 Honduras OPTOMETRY TEAMS are needed to work with our partner PREDISAN in Honduras. The team will provide basic optometry services to children and adults in rural communities. Spring days Optometrists $1,700 - $2,000 Disaster Response Teams Disaster Response teams provide rapid and coordinated disaster response to the most vulnerable populations during and after a humanitarian emergency. Recruitment activities must be completed before a disaster occurs to qualify for deployment. Using our roster helps us to be one of the first agencies on the scene, providing immediate care.
