WHITE PAPER The Ideal IT Architecture for the Cloud Era By Dean Tremblay Director, Professional Services, Rogers Data Centres

The Ideal IT Architecture for the Cloud Era A Hybrid Cloud based on a software-defined data centre may offer the ultimate in agility, scalability and efficiency. Today s IT organization is under considerable pressure on many fronts. From within, IT management continues to struggle with the age-old conflict between the effort and cost required just to keep the lights on and keep existing systems running smoothly, and the need to generate value for the business by allocating resources to develop and deploy new applications and new services. Numerous reports from industry analysts suggest that maintaining existing systems chews up as much as 70% to 90% of the total IT budget, leaving precious little to spend on innovation. In business units, managers are looking for more responsive support from IT faster provisioning of applications and services. They are also looking for IT to be more agile and to close the gap between what IT can deliver today and what is available in the public domain namely, utility computing services. Line-of-business people are quick to point out that IT is too slow and cannot give them what they need, yet they can simply go online with a credit card and spin-up a new service or application that same day. The more public services that emerge, the more they try to leverage these services as opposed to what IT is delivering or, in many cases, not delivering. In so doing, business units may also be circumventing governance or compliance requirements and, as a result, corporate data may no longer be secure. Increasing pressure is also being exerted on IT by the end-user community. Historically, with users sitting in an office, connected to the corporate network, IT could control what they did; but this is no longer what the world looks like. More often than not, today s knowledge and information workers are working remotely outside the four walls of the organization, outside the corporate LAN, outside the firewall and thus have a different perspective now on what they can and cannot get from IT. When users choose Dropbox for file sharing, for example, it is because it is seen to be easier to use and quicker to provision than the file servers and SharePoint solutions that IT might traditionally promote and these may only be offered to those working inside the firewall because properly managed and controlled access from outside the firewall can be very difficult to configure and maintain. Similarly, when users spin-up new servers and workloads on a public cloud, they often rationalize it to IT by saying It would take you guys six months to give this to me, but I got it this afternoon. In a lot of cases, users are taking advantage of public cloud offerings behind IT s back, and many organizations are not even aware this is occurring. To respond to these pressures, IT simply must change the way it does things what IT did in the past will not likely make it successful going forward. Things are changing too dramatically and old approaches are no longer adequate. IT needs to complement traditional focus on the needs of the business with greater focus on the expectations of end users. If I can get what I need faster and cheaper from somewhere else, why would I get it from IT? This is what users are thinking about today, whether inside or outside your organization, even though they may not be thinking about who is going to be responsible for the security of the data; and the younger the users, the more true this is. This has become part of the challenge of attracting new employees, and IT organizations must constantly be evaluating what they are doing, how they are doing it and how they can do things differently to be more efficient and agile. 2 DATACENTRES.ROGERS.COM

All Roads Lead to the Cloud One thing that IT has done differently to be more efficient and agile is adopt virtualization, which has enabled the creation of computing resource pools that optimize asset utilization, accelerate service provisioning and enhance infrastructure scalability and flexibility. According to industry analyst Gartner, 60% of server workloads will be running on virtualized infrastructure in 2013, and as high as 80% by % WORKLOADS ON VIRTUALIZED INFRASTRUCTURE 100% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0 80% 59% 60% 51% 42% 33% 22% 14% 9% Source: Gartner Magic Quadrant Although the aggressive adoption of virtualization by many IT organizations has enabled significant gains in infrastructure provisioning, resiliency, availability and cost, there is a growing realization that keeping everything in-house and doing it all yourself may not be the best way to run your infrastructure or meet demanding new end-user expectations. With the goal of doing things even faster and cheaper, while maintaining the control and the quality standards they need for the business and for individual users accessing the services they deliver, IT Managers are turning more and more to cloud-based service delivery. This new provisioning model for IT offers numerous benefits, including efficiency, self-service, instant provisioning, pay-for-use and fast, easy scalability up or down. For a growing number of organizations, migration to the cloud is well underway, and just as virtualization has done over a few short years, cloud computing has become a permanent fixture on the IT landscape. The evolution of cloud computing has been shaped considerably by earlier concerns that clouds were less secure than conventional data centres behind the corporate firewall. As a result, many early cloud adopters chose dedicated private clouds, either on-premise or hosted by a third-party, for core business-critical applications, believing them to be more secure, while relegating non-critical workloads to public clouds. In spite of numerous technological advancements in the cloud, including solutions to many initial security problems, this pattern of cloud adoption keep critical workloads in-house, move non-critical workloads to the cloud is still prominent. In some cases, this is due to residual concerns about security, but in a large number of instances, it is because of compliance and data sovereignty requirements. In some sectors, stringent control and accountability requirements presented by industry and governmental regulations drive organizations to retain certain workloads and data in-house. The need to support both critical and non-critical workloads is met quite well by the hybrid deployment model the combined use of private and public clouds, where the clouds are not necessarily interconnected. 3 DATACENTRES.ROGERS.COM

Introducing the True Hybrid Cloud A potential drawback with the conventional hybrid deployment model in which the private and public clouds are not interconnected, is the difficulty in moving workloads back and forth between them. The architecture and technology stack underpinning a private cloud infrastructure may be totally different than that used by a public cloud service provider. As a result, moving a workload from the private cloud may require re-architecting it for that different public cloud infrastructure. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a hybrid cloud is, the composition of two or more distinct cloud infrastructures (private, community or public) that remain unique entities, but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability. With a true hybrid cloud, however, the private cloud and the public cloud are based on the same architecture and technology stack, allowing workloads to be moved back and forth easily, without the complexities of having to re-architect or re-build the application environment or re-assign IP addresses. With a hybrid cloud, organizations can experience significant economies for those applications that run fine in-house for 90% of the time but need additional computing resources to support a peak period. In this scenario, the workload is bursted to the public cloud for that peak period and reclaimed when it is over. For example, to support additional processing requirements for finance and accounting applications during a year-end accounting period, businesses can burst these workloads to a public cloud. There, computing resources can be scaled up more quickly and typically at less cost than scaling-up in-house infrastructure; and then the workload and data can be brought back in-house, with no infrastructure compatibility issues. Another use case, which happens to highlight the benefit of being able to re-allocate resources within a hybrid cloud for better utilization, would be for a Development team to push all its overnight batch workloads out to the public cloud and then retrieve them in the morning. With a hybrid cloud and cloud bursting, an application can be deployed locally and then burst to the cloud to meet peak demands, or the application can be moved to the public cloud to free-up local resources for morecritical applications. A hybrid cloud also provides an alternate computing environment to support planned system maintenance downtime. Perhaps one of the most critical and beneficial uses of a hybrid cloud would be in providing a secondary site for business continuity and disaster recovery purposes. VMware s new vcloud Hybrid Service, for example, provides this true hybrid cloud capability. With a private cloud based on a VMware stack and a similarly architected public cloud from a VMware Cloud services provider partner, such as Rogers Data Centres, workloads can be moved back and forth easily as the demand for additional resources increases and decreases. And because the infrastructure is built on vsphere, the same level of security, reliability and service are available in the public cloud as on-site. According to VMware, the more than 3,500 applications that are already certified to run on vsphere can be moved to the hybrid cloud and run with no changes. 4 DATACENTRES.ROGERS.COM

Software-Defined Data Centre Pivotal to Hybrid Cloud In the past, it generally took a long time and a lot of money to provision a new service in-house using conventional physical infrastructure. Although the advent of server virtualization reduced provisioning costs and timelines considerably, since a Virtual Machine can be spun-up in minutes, it still requires the technical team to do the physical stuff related to storage and networking, which slows things down. It also impedes the organization s ability to leverage a true hybrid model because the in-house system architecture is unlikely to match the public cloud architecture, thus impacting workload portability. For example, consider a security workload that is predicated on the use of physical load balancers and firewalls. Moving that workload to another infrastructure, such as a public cloud, means that either the new infrastructure must also support the same workload model, or the workload would have to be re-architected to run in a different environment, and then potentially re-architected once again to move back in-house. Instead, why not virtualize everything? Why not do the same thing with the storage, networking and other elements of the infrastructure stack that have traditionally been done in the physical realm that was done with CPU and memory deliver them in software! This dramatically increases workload portability and flexibility and allows organizations to fully leverage the hybrid cloud model. PAST EVOLUTION OF PROVISIONING PRESENT EMERGING PHYSICAL SERVER VIRTUAL SERVER PHYSICAL STACK SOFTWARE-DEFINED DATA CENTRE ENTERPRISE STORAGE VM VLAN NETWORKS $10, WEEKS $1,800 5 DAYS, 2 MINUTES FIREWALL LOAD-BALANCER IDS, SECURITY, MONITORING $300 3 MINUTES 5 DATACENTRES.ROGERS.COM

By way of example, consider a large, complex Microsoft SharePoint deployment running onpremise and consisting of many servers. It would be virtually impossible to move this workload to someone else s infrastructure. For one thing, all the IP addresses are hard-coded, and in a lot of cases, there are physical firewall devices sitting between a number of the elements, such as the application and the database, both of which could actually be running as VMs on the same physical server. However, if you virtualize the hardware elements and deliver them as software constructs, they can ride with the application, which can then be moved to another data centre, thus enabling the use of the hybrid cloud model. The software-defined data centre is an extensible cloud architecture that supports unprecedented choices, is completely hardware agnostic, is elastic and responds quickly to changing business needs, all while supporting a fully automated ecosystem. This architecture can be consumed on-premise or as a cloud service, or combined to create a true hybrid cloud; and when it is used to create a hybrid cloud, both the private cloud (i.e. on-premise data centre) and public cloud environments can be administered and managed using a single, integrated common management platform, as depicted by the accompanying diagram.
