1 Find Hidden Words (Decoding Strategy) Ask your child: Finding smaller words in larger ones. 1. Do you see a little word inside the big word? 4 Chunk it Out (Decoding Strategy) Dividing the word into smaller chunks. Ask your child: 1. Do you see chunks in the word? 2. Chop the word up into chunks then read the chunks one after the other. 3. What does that word start with? Demandez à votre enfant: Comment diviser le mot 1. 5 Backtrack (Decoding Strategy) Backtracking or rereading. 1. Go back and reread the sentence and maybe the sentence before. 2. What word would make sense? 3. Does that sound like you would say it? 4. Now, reread a little faster. Comment relire le texte ou revenir en arrière 1. Relis la phrase et peut-être même la précédente. 2. Quel mot irait bien là? 3. 6 Look for Patterns (Decoding Strategy) Looking for word patterns. Ask your child: 1. Does that word have a word pattern that you know? (at, ew, ake ) 2. Does it look like a word you know? (e. g. yellow looks like fellow) 3. Are there words with the same patterns? 4. Do they rhyme? Comment chercher des structures de mots similaires Demandez à votre enfant: 1. 7 Say the First Sound (Decoding Strategy) Using the first sound in a word. 1. What is the first letter sound in the word? 2. Read it. The word may just Pop into your head and out your mouth!
