Family and Child Care Resources Winter/Spring 2014 Workshops WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION F01 Attachment and the Circle of Security Friday February 28, :00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. The Circle of Security training is an introduction to Attachment Theory. During this workshop, participants will increase their awareness of the needs of the children they are caring for and whether their own responses meet those needs. Facilitators: Mona Klagenberg is the Clinical Supervisor in the Family Support Program at Family Dynamics. She is a member of the Attachment Network Manitoba and has been facilitating workshops on attachment since Shay Smythe is a Behaviour Support Coordinator in the Family and Child Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. F02 You ve Got What it Takes! Supporting All the Children in Your Care Saturday May 3, 2014 *Note: This workshop is geared to people new to the field, but open to all! Caregivers really do have the skills, desire and abilities to meet the needs of all the children in their program. Great caregivers also look for new ways of thinking about how they can provide the highest quality care. There are many things we cannot change about a child s life and experience. This workshop will focus on some of the things we can do: Our attitudes about behaviour How to be a behaviour detective Building positive relationships with children, parents and colleagues How to provide fun, developmentally appropriate activities Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. Sylvia Ritchie is a Behaviour Support Coordinator in the Family and Child Care Resources program at family Dynamics.

F03 Go Find Something to Do!: Programming for Success in School Age Programs Monday March 10, 2014 Engaging school age children can be one of the biggest challenges facing caregivers. A strong school age program responds to children s interests and invites children to be a partner in planning daily activities and special events. In this workshop, participants will learn to create an environment that is welcoming, supports and promotes independence and enhances children s positive social interactions. Using a mix of small group activities, large group discussions and role plays, participants will come away with lots of practical ideas for working collaboratively with colleagues, children and parents to develop a fun, engaging environment. *Note: This workshop is geared to people new to the child care field working with children 5-12 years of age, but open to all! Facilitators: Sylvia Ritchie and Wendy Lothian are Behaviour Support Coordinators in the Family and Child Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. F04 Mad, Sad and Frustrated: Helping Children Manage Their Big, Often Intense, Feelings Monday March 31, 2014 Another biting incident, a shoe flying through the air, a bin of crayons dumped on the floor - When do these behaviours mean I m mad! or I m scared or I don t understand what you want me to do? Children need calm and responsive adults to help them recognize, understand and manage their intense feelings. Caregivers who take the time to listen, share and teach children during emotional moments foster healthy emotional development, encourage positive relationships and have fewer behaviour problems. Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. Shay Smythe is a Behaviour Support Coordinator in the Family and Child Care Resources Program at Family Dynamics.

F05 Play Skills to Pencils Saturday April 5, 2014 Cutting, using a spoon, threading beads, moving puzzle pieces, drawing, tracing, zipping and tying. Opening a jar, using tweezers, tongs, chopsticks or clothespins. Sewing, crumpling paper, using an egg beater, pouring juice. Strong fine motor skills (using small muscles in hands and fingers) are essential to doing all these things. Without well-developed fine motor skills, a child may struggle learning to write or do other tasks at day care, school and at home. This workshop will give participants an overview of fine motor development and lots of fun games and activities to support and encourage fine motor skills. There will be lots of time to ask Susan about struggles and challenges you might be seeing in your program. If you ve been to one of Susan s other workshops here at Family Dynamics, you know you ll come away with lots of practical information you can use right away. Facilitator: Susan Hales O.T. Reg. (MB), is an Occupational Therapist at Children s Hospital. She is also an Instructor in the Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Medical Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. F06 Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Wednesday April 16, 2014 This workshop will discuss how FASD impacts the brain and results in behaviors that require careful attention. A large part of the workshop will describe how FASD affects an individual s ability to function throughout the day and strategies to accommodate for this. Facilitator: Andrea Auch, is an Occupational Therapist in the position of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Consultant with the FASD Family Support, Education and Counselling Program in Winnipeg. Her primary focus for the past 11 years has been with young children prenatally exposed to alcohol with sensory processing dysfunctions. She assists children and caregivers by providing sensory based strategies in the home, daycare, and school setting. She also has experience working in the field of mental health.

F07 Attention and Self Regulation: Practical Steps for Building Success Saturday April 26, 2014 There are many reasons why children have trouble paying attention. Some children may appear inattentive while others show an unusual need for activity. Some children may appear impulsive, hypersensitive or tend to overreact to minor challenges. This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to become better detectives in identifying and understanding children with attention and self regulation difficulties. Strategies to support children as well as practical ideas to best meet their individual needs will be explored and discussed. Leslie has visited numerous child care programs in Winnipeg, so brings an experienced eye to the many challenges and strengths of child care centres, family day care homes and nursery schools. Facilitator: Leslie Assor, O.T. Reg.(MB) is an Occupational Therapist who has been working with children for over 30 years. Leslie currently works at the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities at the Communication Centre for Children providing O.T. to preschoolers who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. She also operates Choice Children s Multi Rehabilitation Services, a private Occupational Therapy practice. Leslie is a Sensory Integration Certified Therapist who has a special interest in treating children with sensory processing challenges. F08 Why Does the Baby Do That? The funny, puzzling and mysterious world of infant behaviour Wednesday April 30, 2014 * Note: This workshop is geared to people working with children 3-24 months Head banging, not eating, crying all the time, losing a skill, breath holding, biting this workshop will try and answer all your questions about why babies do these things. And yes, there really are reasons why! We will also introduce participants to Magda Gerber s Resources for Educaring approach to infant care, which is based on a deep respect for a baby as more than a helpless object. Do you have a question about infant behavior not listed above? We welcome your queries in advance of the workshop. Martha at melliott@familydynamics.ca or call her at (204)

Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. Shay Smythe is a Behaviour Support Coordinator in the Family and Child Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. F09 Building a Solid Foundation Saturday March 1, 2014 Does your program sit on a solid foundation? Having a solid foundation means that you don t have to reinvent the wheel every time a new problem, challenge or opportunity arises. This workshop will introduce participants to some of the pieces which make up a solid foundation, including: positive communication, smooth transitions, using visuals, role modeling and the importance of having fun. We ll give you lots of time to practice, problem solve and share ideas with colleagues from across the city. *Note: This workshop is geared to participants new to the child care field, but everyone is welcome! Care Resources Program at Family Dynamics. Wendy Lothian is a Behaviour Support Coordinator in the Family and Child Care Resources program at Family Dynamics. F10 Anxiety in Children: What it Looks Like in a Child Care Setting - Part 1 Wednesday May 14, 2014 Anxiety takes many forms and is a normal part of child development. Anxiety is the most common problem experienced by children across all ages. However some children experience fears and worries that are excessive and cause considerable distress in comparison to other same-aged children. This workshop will provide an overview of childhood anxiety disorders and will help you learn to identify signs of anxiety in a school or daycare setting. Facilitator: Michelle Diawol works as a school psychologist in the school setting, and in private practice with the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Institute of Manitoba and in independent practice with Dr. Michelle Warren and Associates. She sits on the Executive Board with the Manitoba Association of School Psychologists. She specializes in working with children and adolescents with anxiety and their families. She also works with groups and organizations providing information and workshops on anxiety, stress management, vicarious trauma, behaviour management and other topics. *Note: Part 2 of this workshop, focusing on practical solutions, will be offered in June. Please look for an e- mail announcing the date and time in late February.
