ASOR (AMERICAN SCHOOLS FOR ORIENTAL RESEARCH) ANNUAL MEETING, SAN DIEGO, CA, WESTIN HOTEL, NOVEMBER 19-22, 2014, SESSION: "AGENCY AND IDENTITY THROUGH DRESS IN THE ANCIENT AND CLASSICAL NEAR EAST" ASOR (American Schools for Oriental Research) Annual Meeting, Member-Organized Session San Diego, CA, Westin Hotel, November 19-22, 2014 Session chair: Allison Thomason (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) This year's session on dress at ASOR focuses on the consumption of dress objects as they relate to the formation and performance of individual, social, and institutional identities. Presenters might explore how individuals or groups expressed agency and negotiated status or gender roles through the manipulation of dress objects. The session is wideranging, and I encourage submission of abstracts that explore a variety of objects, such as textiles and items of adornment, and a broad arena of geographic and chronological contexts within the Near East. Abstracts (250 words) should be submitted by February 15, 2014 to ASOR's online abstract submission system. In the submission process, please be sure to indicate that you are submitting your abstract to this member-organized session. Professional membership in ASOR and registration for the Annual Meeting is required at the time of abstract submission (directions will be provided in the confirmation of abstract receipt). Abstracts will not be reviewed until first authors of the papers have registered for the meeting. Should an abstract not be accepted, the registration fee can be refunded. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this policy. Please also note ASOR's rules for participation in the Annual Meeting. Please fee free to contact the session chair with any questions about the session. Allison Thomason (althoma@siue.edu) 13
2015 AIA ANNUAL MEETING, NEW ORLEANS, JAN 8-11, 2015, CALLS FOR PAPERS The AIA is now accepting submissions for its 116th Annual Meeting, which will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from January We encourage everyone to review the full Call for Papers (available at ) prior to submitting. Deadline for Submissions As in past years, all colloquium sessions must be submitted by the first round of deadlines in March. Workshops and open session submissions may be submitted to meet either the March deadlines (if an early decision is needed to acquire a visa or obtain funding) or the second set of deadlines in August. The submission system will be open through August 17, If you expect to be in the field without Internet access you may submit your abstracts early, but you will not be notified of the PAMC's decision until late September. * First Deadline: Sunday, March 9, 2014 and Sunday, March 23 (with $25 fee) * Second Deadline: Sunday, August 3, 2014 and Sunday, August 17 (with $25 fee) Session Types The AIA continues to offer both organized (workshops and colloquia) and open sessions. In addition, the AIA continues to offer additional session types: Undergraduate Sessions: The AIA and Program for the Annual Meeting Committee have created two special sessions specifically for undergraduate students who would like an opportunity to present the results of their research at the Annual Meeting, but are not yet ready to participate in the regular program. There will be both an undergraduate colloquium for oral presentations, and an undergraduate poster session. These sessions will provide a fantastic opportunity for undergraduate students to experience the challenges and thrills of presenting at a professional meeting, and they will be held to the same high standards as other participants in the Annual Meeting. Lightning Session: This session is intended for brief five-minute presentations on a particular idea (e.g. for a research project, relating to one's dissertation, etc.) followed by five minutes of feedback from the audience and other participants. The session will be very low pressure and informal, but potentially very useful as a venue to float new ideas. The session will be held outside of the regular session blocks. Poster Colloquia: The AIA and the Program for the Annual Meeting Committee are for the first time soliciting poster colloquia. A poster colloquium should be organized around a particular theme, just like a paper colloquium, and submitted at the same time as paper colloquia. The full Call for Papers 14
( and submission instructions are available on the AIA website ( Please review these instructions prior to submitting your abstract or session. All submissions must be made electronically by means of the online submission system via the AIA website. All submissions, of course, must pass the PAMC's vetting process to be put onto the program. The online submission forms and supporting documents are available on the AIA website. * View the 2015 Call for Papers: * Online Submission Forms: 15
GROUND STONE ARTIFACTS AND SOCIETY, AN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON GROUND STONE ARTIFACTS: QUARRYING, PRODUCTION, FUNCTION AND EXCHANGE, JULY UNIVERSITY OF HAIFA It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in an international workshop on ground stone artifacts. The workshop will be held at the University of Haifa, Israel (July 5-9, 2015). This first circular is aimed at providing basic ideas about the workshop themes, the general outline and to begin a dialogue with potential participants. If you have an interest in broadening and developing the approaches to ground stone artifact analysis and would like to participate, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible so that we can begin to evaluate the number of participants and sessions. Please send all communications ( s, suggestions and comments) to Danny Rosenberg (drosenberg@research.haifa.ac.il). Don't hesitate to forward this to any of your colleagues who might have an interest in taking part in the workshop. Scientific committee - Danny Rosenberg, Laboratory for Ground Stone Tools Research, Zinman Institute of Archaeology, University of Haifa (drosenberg@research.haifa.ac.il) - Yorke M. Rowan, Oriental Institute, University of Chicago (ymrowan@uchicago.edu) - Tatjana M. Gluhak, Institut für Geowissenschaften, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (gluhak@uni-mainz.de). - Katherine I. (Karen) Wright, Institute of Archaeology, University College London (k.wright@ucl.ac.uk). Themes Studies of ground stone increasingly play an integral role in any truly holistic archaeological research program. Ground stone artifacts served in widely divergent physical and social contexts through millennia, reflecting a wide variety of functions, documented through a century of archaeological and ethnographic research. Although commonly associated with prosaic daily necessities such as food production, this important functional role is often treated as their sole purpose. However, ground stone artifacts are also used for a wealth of other functions such as processing other materials, tool manufacture, and storage; they also carry symbolic meanings, serve as markers of identity, or are imbued with religious or ideological significance. Taken together with other categories of material culture as part of the functional and cultural fabric of a society, contemporary ground stone studies are treated in various ways by different scholars who employ a range of analytical methods and approaches, including the application of scientific techniques. Inspired by these diverse analytical 16
approaches and interpretive challenges, one of the principle aims of this workshop is to promote a dialogue and create an optimal arena for scholars who are interested in ground stone artifact studies and the various issues related to this growing area of research. We would like to initiate discussions on various ground stone related topics in order to debate new methodologies and interpretations, discuss analytical currents, and exchange ideas concerning challenges of data storage and presentation. General topics and sessions We envision several ground stone-related thematically driven topics that could be used as starting points for different discussions and could be used as titles for sessions. These include, for example, the social context of ground stone artifacts in different geographic locations, periods and cultures; quarries, quarrying technologies and quarrying tools; production techniques; archaeometric and provenance studies; micro/macro-wear and residue analyses and other functional studies; trade and exchange systems and mechanisms; studies of bedrock features; ethnography of ground stone use; ground stone in prehistory and in later antiquity. Other topics and themes are also welcome. The number of sessions and their principle themes will be decided when the deadline for sending abstracts is due and all abstracts are considered. Technical Information Duration and tentative dates: 5 days, 5-9 July Location: The workshop will take place in the University of Haifa, Mount Carmel, Israel. Oral contributions: Oral contributions will be 15 minutes long followed by a 5 minutes discussion. Poster presentation: Poster presentations are also welcome. Abstracts: An abstract of approx. 300 words (including author's details and institutional affiliation). Language: English is the official language for the Conference. Deadline for submitting abstracts: TBA. Deadline for registration: TBA. Workshop fees: TBA. Accommodations: We will seek fare rate accommodation in Haifa. Transportation to Haifa: Convenient trains and buses run frequently from Ben-Gurion Airport. Field trip: Optional, we are planning a field trip on the 3rd day of the workshop. 19 2015 AIA ANNUAL MEETING, GETTING ELEMENTAL: INTEGRATING ISOTOPES AND ARCHAEOLOGY, NEW ORLEANS, LA, JAN 8 TH -11 TH, 2015, CALL FOR PAPERS Dear all, Below please find a call for papers for a proposed session at the 2015 AIA annual meeting that will focus on isotopic analyses and archaeology. Please distribute widely to anyone who might be interested in participating or attending. Many thanks, Jeff *********************************************************************** Jeffrey F. Leon PhD Candidate in Classical Archaeology Department of Classics Cornell University 120 Goldwin Smith Hall, Ithaca, NY (551) *********************************************************************** 2015 AIA Annual Meeting, New Orleans, LA, Jan 8 th -11th Getting Elemental: Integrating Isotopes and Archaeology Co-organizers: Catherine M. Kearns (Cornell University) and Jeffrey F. Leon (Cornell University) Call for Papers Archaeometric investigations of stable and radioisotopes have, since the establishment of radiometric dating methods in the 1950s, become increasingly common in archaeological investigations. From analyses of local herding practices to broader models of past climate, new work continues to highlight the potentials for isotopic analyses in reconstructions of ancient social, political, and cultural practices. These advances are possible because interdisciplinary approaches are integrating archaeological and isotopic data, thus avoiding the unproductive gap between archaeology and the natural and physical sciences. This AIA colloquium aims to draw examples of these new applications into dialogue, examining the limitations and challenges of isotopic research, while also exploring its potential to answer social, economic, and political questions about the ancient world. We invite abstracts from a broad range of perspectives that emphasize the integration of isotopic and archaeological data from all regions of the ancient Mediterranean world, extending from earliest prehistory. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): 19
tracking mobility and movement of faunal and human populations, diet and foodways, palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental proxies, compositional analysis of materials, radiometric analysis, and residue analysis. Papers should either consider methodological aspects (e.g. how to effectively collect and collate isotopic data for archaeological applications; statistical approaches that are useful in presenting, analyzing and interpreting data in archaeological pursuits; limitations of isotopic analyses), or present current research projects employing isotopic approaches to answer archaeological research questions. Papers that link explicit archaeological questions with isotopic data and methods (rather than simply showing isotopic data-points) will be given priority. Anonymous abstracts of no more than 400 words should be sent to with identifying information in the . Abstracts must follow the AIA guidelines, copied below. In the body of the , please confirm that you are a current AIA member. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 5 pm, March 4th, Once a panel with AIA member contributions is composed, it will be submitted to AIA for approval. AIA guidelines for abstracts: The title of a proposed presentation should indicate its specific content in clear terms. The abstract must not exceed 400 words and must conform to the AIA Style Guidelines for Annual Meeting Abstracts, available in PDF format in the Annual Meeting section of the AIA website: The research described should be referred to in the present tense rather than in the future tense. (e.g., I present an analysis of three sealed deposits, rather than, I will present an analysis of three sealed deposits. ). While limited use of in-text citations (in author:year format) is acceptable, bibliographical references and footnotes should not be included and will be removed. 20
