4 STATEMENT FROM SOUTH FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Students interested in enrolling in our continuing education courses must understand that these courses are not designed or intended to qualify its participants and graduates for employment. They are intended solely for the avocation, personal enrichment, continuing education, and enjoyment of its participants. South Florida Institute of Technology does not make any statement implying that persons who enroll in or complete the continuing education courses have a more substantial likelihood of obtaining employment in the field to which the training pertains than people who do not. Continuing education courses are not prerequisite or provide credit toward any vocational program offered within the school. PAYMENT OF FEES AND TUITION All tuition and fees must be paid at the time of registration. We accept cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, Discover and money orders. BOOKS AND SUPPLIES If books and supplies are required, they are not included in the tuition cost unless indicated in the course description. Some courses require the purchase of special books or equipment. Some courses require a supply fee payable at the first class, or a supply list will be provided at the time of registration or at the first class meeting. COMPLETION OF COURSE Upon completion of the continuing education course students will be provided with a Certificate of Course Completion. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY Should student s enrollment be terminated or cancelled for any reason, all refunds will be made according to the following refund schedule: 1. Cancellation can be made in person, by electronic mail, by Certified Mail or by Termination. 2. All monies will be refunded if the school does not accept the applicant or if the student cancels within three (3) business days after signing the enrollment agreement and making initial payment. 3. Cancellation after attendance has begun, but prior to 40% completion of the program, will result in a Pro Rata refund computed on the number of hours completed to the total course hours. 4. Cancellation after completing 40% of the program will result in no refund. 5. Termination Date: When calculating the refund due to a student, the last date of actual attendance by the student is used in the calculation unless earlier written notice is received. 6. Refunds will be made within 30 days of termination of the student s enrollment or receipt of a Cancellation Notice from the student. 4
5 COMPLAINT & GRIEVANCES APPEAL PROCEDURES Complaints and grievances will be handled in a reasonable manner. Everyone involved is expected to concentrate on the solution of disagreements and personal reconciliation. The parties must attempt to resolve the disagreement among them prior to the involvement of a higher authority. In the event that the disagreement continues unresolved, the parties may bring the issue(s) to the Board of Directors for further review. Once the Board of Director dictates a solution, the complaint or grievance shall be considered to have no further recourse and the parties involved must abide to the resolution of the Appealing Body. If a student does not feel that the school has adequately addressed a complaint or concern with its human and authority resources, the students may consider contacting the Commission for Independent Education or the Accrediting Commission. All complaints considered by the Commission must be in written form, with permission from the complainant(s) for the Commission to forward a copy of the complaint to the school for a response; the complainant(s) will be kept informed as to the status for the complaint as well as the final resolution by the Commission. 7 JOURNEYMAN AIR CONDITIONING EXAM PREPARATION OBJECTIVE This course is designed to help test applicants prepare for the Miami Dade Journeyman Air Conditioning examination by explaining general mechanical concepts, equations, maintenance regulations and latest code related issues. COURSE DESCRIPTION This preparation course will cover a review of the main topics for the Journeyman Air Conditioning s exam. This program includes topics such as refrigeration, ductworks, pipe systems, codes, filters and related content, as well as several practice tests for training purposes. REQUIREMENTS Participant must have at least three years of field experience in the trade or education equivalent or a combination of the two, but not more than one-half consisting of education equivalent. Seminar assumes that the student has a basic understanding of mechanical theory and trade knowledge. 8 COURSE DESCRIPTION JML 1 - Basic Math, Mechanical formulas. Pressure, temperatures, utilities tables. This course covers the basic physical, chemical, and engineering principles which apply to refrigeration, define basics refrigeration terms, and how to use temperature conversion formulas to convert from one temperature scale to another. JML 2 - Refrigerants. Properties. EPA regulations and safety In this topic students will understand the differences between CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs. They will learn how to identify and classify common refrigerants by their numbers, their properties and approved safety procedures for handling refrigerants. JML 3 - Refrigeration systems. Equipments, compressors, condensers, evaporators and metering devices. This section covers the five thermal laws relating to refrigeration, the compression cycle, types of motor controls, compression systems, different types of compressors and their functions. JML 4 - Tube, piping and accessories This portion lists and discusses the various types of tubing used in refrigeration work, how to use various hand tools, identify thread types, and how to maintain and calibrate gauges. JML 5 - Heating systems. Boilers and burners Students will discuss the design of different air conditioning systems and the specific details of how each system operates. The combustion process and the types of ignition systems will be explained as well as how to compare gas, oil, hydronic, and electric heating systems. JML 6 - Psychometric. Air process. Heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification This topic will explain the principles of air conditioning, air movement and humidity. It will also cover the use of various instruments, such as psychrometers, recorders, barometers as well as the interpretation of psychometric charts and scales. JML 7 - Air distribution, ductwork, filter, grilles, registers and insulation. In this course students will be taught about basic ventilation requirements, the different types of air duct systems, duct sizing, design, air cleaning system and distribution. The principles and methods for cleaning air will be covered as well. JML 8 - Automatic Controls. Maintenance and service. This section covers the common types of electrical circuit controls used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, how to test and service thermostats, and understanding electrical circuits. How to work safely around electrical circuits and controls is also covered. 8
9 JML 9 - Florida mechanical code, energy code. This course includes the fundamentals about the Florida Building Code enforced by local governments. It will also cover the minimum requirements for permissions, plans review and inspections that are established by the code. JML 10 - Fuel Gas code NFPA 54. OSHA safety code This part will cover the use of gas code that regulates the design and installation of fuel gas distribution piping and systems. The purpose of the code is to establish the acceptable level of safety in compliance with the OSHA regulations to protect life and property from potential dangers. JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN EXAM PREPARATION OBJECTIVE This course is designed to help test applicants prepare for the Miami Dade Electrician Journeyman examination by explaining general electrical concepts. The objective of this course is to facilitate effective training, review the essential mathematics formulas and National Electrical Code topics needed to successfully pass an electrical certification examination for Journeyman. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course prepares individuals to take the Journeyman Electrician in the Miami Dade County. A variety of theoretical and applied concepts will be covered in each course, with the overarching intent of journeyman electrician certification preparation. Each class will devote a significant portion of time covering the National Electrical Code. REQUIREMENTS Participant must have at least three years of field experience in the trade or education equivalent or a combination of the two, but not more than one-half consisting of education equivalent. Student must have a basic understanding of electrical theory and trade knowledge. 10 COURSE DESCRIPTION JEL 1 - Electrical Theory This course includes Math and electrical basic fundaments necessary for the understanding of electrical systems. This program also covered basic requirements of electrical circuits, combination of series, parallel circuits, and the roles of current and voltage in each of these types of circuits. Other topics included are the special characteristics of alternating current and how it is generated, distributed, and utilized. The basic operational characteristics of motors and transformers, the way they work, proper installation and connections are also discussed in this course. JEL 2 - NEC Calculations This section studies Raceway and Box calculations, their limits and the amount of conductors in the raceways as well as the proper installation. Another topic covered will be Conductor sizing and Protection Calculations; how to make the correct choice in sizing electrical conductors and the selection of the proper conductor. Motor circuit s special requirements and air conditioning calculations in compliance with Article 430 are also discussed. This course includes how to find the necessary information for making an accurate voltage-drop calculation for single and three phase circuits. This content will be helpful in designing practical circuits and preparing students for the exam. JEL 3 - Dwelling Unit Calculations and Small Appliances This portion focuses on sizing the service for one-family dwelling unit and commercial calculations. Standard and Optional methods are explained, so the students can familiarized with both methods for examination purposes. There are other topics covered such as small appliances, cooking equipment, laundry circuit, general lighting and receptacles, as well as feeder services and load calculations. NURSING ASSISTANT EXAM PREPARATION (CNA) OBJECTIVE This course prepares test applicants to take the certification exam which is necessary to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Florida. The program is designed to prepare qualified individuals to be safe, caring and effective nursing assistants who work under the supervision of qualified health care professionals. COURSE DESCRIPTION This program presents basic nursing assistant principals as well as providing opportunities for practice and demonstration skills related to patient care. This intensive course focuses on the teaching practices of the 22 skills that are part of the Clinical Skills Test. It will also cover the importance of standard Procedures, ethical standards, and legal limitations as well as the study of medical abbreviations frequently used on the daily work. REQUIREMENTS Student must have passed a course in Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or Home Health Aid; or obtained previous theoretical studies on the subject. 10

12 COURSE DESCRIPTION CNATP 1 - Hand washing In this course students will learn about Hand washing as one of the five skills scored in every Clinical Skills Test as well as how to use Standard Precautions and Infection Control Measures when providing care. CNATP 2 - Change an Occupied Bed This section will teach students how to change the top and bottom sheets and pillow case of the bed while the resident stays in the bed, how to handle it properly and safe. CNATP 3 - Measure and record-pulse In these classes students will learn and review how the pulse should be counted for one full minute and the appropriate measurement form to record the resident s pulse rate. CNATP 4 - Measure and record respiration In this topic students will learn and review how the respiration should be counted for one full minute and the appropriate measurement form to record the resident s respiration rate. CNATP 5 - Transfer the patient from the bed to the wheelchair This course will cover how to transfer a resident who is lying in bed, into a wheelchair. A pivot transfer technique is required and a transfer/gait belt is required too. In addition to this they will learn that the resident is able to stand but cannot take steps. CNATP 6 - Ambulate with the patient In this part students will learn how to walk a resident who needs some assistance to stand. They will also learn that a transfer/gait belt needs to be use while walking the resident. CNATP 7 - Change the patient position This section offers an introduction on how to change the position of a resident who is lying on his/her back, to a side-lying position. For this activity the patient requires support to remain positioned on the side. CNATP 8 - ROM for upper extremities (shoulder) Course offers details on how to provide a range of motion exercise to a resident who is not able to perform the exercises for themselves. The patient needs his/her shoulder flexed and extended, and abducted and adducted. For testing and practice purposes, the resident needs three repetitions of both exercises. CNATP 9 - ROM for upper extremities (elbow and wrist) Students will learn how to provide a range of motion exercise to a resident who is not able to perform the exercises for themselves. The resident needs his/her elbow flexed and extended, and the wrist flexed and hyper extended. For testing purposes, the resident needs three repetitions of both exercises. 12
13 CNATP 10 - ROM for lower extremities (hip, knee and ankle) This part details how to provide a range of motion exercise to a resident who is not able who is not able to perform the exercises for themselves. The resident needs his/her hip and knee flexed and extended, and the dorsiflexion and plantar flexion to the ankle. For testing purposes, the resident needs three repetitions of both exercises. CNATP 11 - Brush the patient s teeth In this course they will learn about oral care of a patient who has his/her natural teeth and needs mouth care; as well as the proper techniques on how to moisten toothbrush with water and apply toothpaste before brushing teeth. CNATP 12 - False denture and mouth care Students will be taught how to handle denture, provide mouth care, and rinsing equipment, how to protect denture from damage and contamination while cleaning it. CNATP 13 - Partial Bed bath This section presents how to wash properly some parts of the body such as patient s face, neck, back, one hand and arm, and one side of the chest and abdomen. Soap and water should be used for the bathing. The patient also needs a back rub with long gliding and circular motions by applying some lotion. CNATP 14 - Hands and Nail care Students will be trained how to clean hand surfaces using a wet washcloth, cleaning between fingers, and if soap used, rinse or remove soap using a clean, soap-free, wet washcloth. A well as the Use of a flat edge of orangewood stick to remove residue under tips of each fingernail. CNATP 15 - Dressing the patient with affected arm This section focus on how to move resident s extremities gently without overextension or force when undressing and dressing and how to apply clothing correctly (e.g. front of shirt in front), adjust clothing for comfort, neatness, alignment, and close fasteners). CNATP 16 - Feeding a dependent patient This course will emphasize how to assist a resident to sit upright in chair before feeding, how to protect resident s clothing with a barrier before taking meals, Leave area around resident s mouth clean and dry after eating and record the amount of the resident s food intake on the Food and Fluid Intake Form. CNATP 17 - Providing Feet care This part teaches how to provide foot care to a resident, the importance of using Soap and water and why foot care should be provided only to one foot at a time as well as replacing the resident s sock and shoes at the end of the skill. CNATP 18 - Measure and record contents urinary drainage bag Students will learn how to empty the resident s urinary drainage bag into a graduate container and to measure the amount of urine. An Intake and Output (I&O) Form will be used to record the 13
14 measurement. The output should be recorded as urine and the correct time recorded for the measurement. CNATP 19 - Giving the bedpan This course will cover how to help a resident who has asked for a bedpan, the proper way of placing a protective pad on bed over bottom sheet, under buttocks/upper thigh area, before placing bedpan. How to place and remove bedpan by either having resident positioned on side to turn on/off back, onto/off bedpan, or having resident raise hips off bed, how to place a bedpan under resident according to form/shape of the selected bedpan and empty contents into toilet. CNATP 20 - Catheter care to incontinence patient This section explains how to provide and safe handled catheter care to a female resident who has an indwelling urinary catheter, the use of soap and water for the catheter care and the cleansing of the front perineal area. CNATP 21 - Female perineal area The subject of this section is how to clean and care the front perineum, to include the genital and skin fold areas of groin. The importance of wear gloves while providing perineal care, cleaning equipment, and handling soiled under pads, washcloths and towels. CNATP 22 Practical Test This course will cover the 22 skills that are part of the Clinical Skills Test. Students will learn the procedures for skills and how to performed them properly on a resident. The course is a preparation for the CNA examination giving the student an exact idea of what to expect on the Clinical Skills Test. 14
