We are so excited, the new Wellness Center is just taking off so fast! The Wellness Center is going to be a drop-in center for anyone who would like to come and participate! It is still under construction down on Orange Grove and Garey Avenue. Our aim is to offer a place where people can come and socialize with each other, and learn how to implement a life of wellness for themselves or a loved one. We are already under way with our groups at our temporary site at 2008 N. Garey Avenue. Our groups are filling up everyday with people who are looking for support on their road to recovery through sharing and hands-on learning. We emphasize welcoming you to come and take this journey with us! I know through my own experience that I have learned so much about me, and I have made a lot of progress. Noelle M.,CSW S U C C E S S S T O R Y INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Summary Wellness Update Recent& Upcoming Events Living Well Job Specialist Info Letter from the Editor Wellness Center Photos Hello, my name is Patricia, and I am a Community Support Worker (CSW) for Tri-City Mental Health. I have worked here since November It is very nice place. I was born in Riverside at what was then March Field Air Force Base. My father was on the fire squad and when he heard, rushed down the mountain, picked up his paycheck and hugged my mom, gave her a big smooch, and I hope his paycheck. I graduated from high school from Covina and still meet with those friends. Then I graduated at Mount San Antonio College in biology, the best thing I ever did. I married Henry who went to graduate school at Claremont acquiring a Master s Degree in History. We then had to part. I stayed and raised the two boys we had, but Henry and I bonded after I sought therapy for family and personal matters. Frankly, we did a pretty good job raising those boys. The oldest graduated at Cal Poly Pomona in Political Science with a commission from U.S. Marine Corps and retired last year as a colonel. He has been working in corporate tax auditing. My other son graduated from Harbor City College then went on to do coursework at Dominguez Hills for teacher training. He now works in managed care as an out-patient caregiver with disabled individuals with a heavy client base. They are married, and I have one grandchild, Nate, who goes to Palomar College and works, surfs, and snowboards. After the boys grew up, I went back to school while working fulltime at Kaiser Permanente getting my certificate in medical records management, accredited records technician license. I worked full-time as a medical transcriber at that time and for over 26 years altogether. These were doctor dictations, all services, all reports. Then, I attended USC's Cancer registry training course, and it was an intense four month course, graduating in I have done volunteer work at a registry, a very interesting program. I have also started an online business, Tri-City Wellness Center, where I now work has done wonderful things for me, helping me get centered again, and I do appreciate all the fine people and programs that are offered here as well as all the help I have received from the clinicians. I now especially like the Depression, Anxiety, Art Group and the fun Music Group. Patricia M.,CSW
2 Page 2 Wellness Newsletter N e w G r o u p s The Music Group has been a favorite meeting of ours as it is entertaining and fun, and all are welcome to participate in the singing, dancing and instrumentation. We have a piano artist, John, who plays music of interest; both contemporary and standards. I was able to present the Irish program with John Shields who was born in Ireland, gave his rendition of St. Patrick s history and that of the Green Isle, Ireland, and an Irish tenor, Bob, sang the old favorites. This group meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 11:00 in 2C6. The Walking group is at the end of the week gathering for the benefit of those interested in having an end of the week stress releaser, and refreshing walk before the weekend starts We have some warmup exercises, then a nearby walk, back in time for some cool downs. Sonny is the leader and is the one we enjoy and look forward to. This group meets on Friday at 11:00 in 2C6. The money management group is presented by Sonny, and is an informative presentation of facts to help all manage their money, be it shopping, banking, saving, or tips on living on a tight budget. The group meets from 3:00 to 4:00 on Wednesdays in B1. The new Spanish group Direccion Positiva, is facilitated by Michelle Thomas, born in Costa Rica and a pleasant, comfortable presentation with the ideal to help those people learn to connect with their spiritual energy, so they can change Their way of feeling, and then they can enrich their inner thoughts and behaviors towards a more positive direction in their lives. This group meets at 1890 North Garey at the temporary Wellness Center in the meeting room. This group meets at 11:00 am to 12:00 p.m. on the 3rd Monday of the month. The Comadres group is a group for mothers who will be getting together having coffee, tea and snacks for socializing; and it is a bilingual group. There will be guest visits by specialists to train group members in parenting and linking to resources, and is for social support. It will begin on May 12 from 9:00 to 10:00 at the Royalty site, which is a children's site. The Anger Management group has a goal to discuss the definition and aspects of anger. It is to identify triggers that identify anger, and increase coping skills, and integrates assertiveness training by using the conflict resolution modality. It begins on May 26 and meets every other Thursday from 11:00 to 12:00 at 2C6. Healing Kids group provides a supportive environment for children who have experienced traumatic events such as losses of family members to circumstances such as divorce or any type of loss in their lives. This group meets every Monday at 4:30 to 5:30 at 2C3. Patricia M, CSW J o h n N e w t o n s S t o r y holic, addict. And so I had grave emotional and mental disorders. I am presently receiving coping skills at Tri City so I can manage my life for the better. I am also enrolled in a twelve step pro- Hello my name is John Newton and this is my story. I came from L A. I was one of sixteen children. My father was a alcoholic. I came from a dysfunctional family, and then had become an alcogram. Someone had given me their two year sobriety coin. This gift gave me unconditional love, hope, and faith. This has opened many doors for me, which I only used to dream about. So now I live one day at a time.
Empeze a tener desordenes mentales y emocionales agudos. The only thing to fear is fear itself. Franklin D. Roosevelt M e s s a g e F r o m R i m m i H u n d a l M H S A M a n a g e r I am honored to write in the second edition of the Wellness Center Newsletter. The Wellness Center is celebrating its first Anniversary and we have come a long way. We started with three activities per month a year ago to providing up to three groups and activities per day at present. The credit completely goes to our hard working staff who continue to provide excellent programming and customer service to our clients. Even though we have limited spacing, the Wellness Center continues to provide support groups to our clients in creative ways. With the addition of the Employment Outreach Coordinator at the beginning of 2011, we have added an incredible dimension to the Wellness Center Team. Staff continues to focus on their professional development as well as providing much needed employment and vocational services to our clients. As we continue to move on and assess the needs of our community, groups continue to grow and new groups are constantly being added to the calendar. With the summer approaching, the Wellness Center is looking to build on existing groups. We are looking forward to seeing you all at the opening of the Wellness Center home, located at 1403 N. Garey Avenue in Pomona coming in the fall of U P C O M I N G E V E N T S I n W e l l n e s s Upcoming for TAY Day are summer programs for teens. Look out for lots of summer fun. Soon to be a part of Tri-City Wellness Center will be a Positive Directions group in English to complement the Spanish Positive Directions group. Learn useful skills to keep your life going in the direction you want. Also coming to Tri-City Wellness Center will be an Anger Management group. Let go of your angry self, and find better ways of coping with life s demands. The second annual Talent show was a tremendous success enjoyed by everyone with many wonderful contestants and a large audience. For all those who enjoyed the Wellness Spring Festival, yes, your wish is coming true! The Summer Festival is coming to refresh your hot days. Look for it in your Tri-City Wellness Center calendar.
