W H I T E P A P E R A u t o m a t i n g D a t a c e n t e r M a nagement: Consolidating Physical and Virtualized Infrastructures Sponsored by: HP Stephen Elliot April 2008 IDC OPINION Global Headquarters: 5 Speen Street Framingham, MA USA P F CIOs and IT executives must consider the negative ramifications of undermanaging virtual infrastructure. Key technology developments in areas such as policy-based management, automation, and capabilities within the virtual machine (VM) itself offer IT operations teams an extension to existing physical management capabilities. Net benefits of managing physical and virtual infrastructures include lower cost of ownership and operations, improved service availability, increased control over change and configuration management, and improved ability to manage across "IT silos." IDC believes that IT organizations must better prepare for and invest in management for the growing problem of VM sprawl that spans server, storage, desktop, and application environments. As virtualization adoption continues to grow, IT executives must place a strategic emphasis on management to accelerate and extend the benefits of virtualization over the long term. IN THIS WHITE PAPER The deployment of virtualization technology for datacenter consolidation, cost reduction, and improved agility continues to accelerate datacenter adoption, spanning server, storage, application, and client environments. Increasingly, IT organizations are adopting heterogeneous hypervisor environments, increasing complexity and the need for management. Virtual computing teams, operations executives, datacenter managers, and server and storage teams face increasing pressure to gain the expected ROI from their virtualization investments. The need to manage change, configuration, performance, and capacity management in an automated fashion continues to grow. This white paper examines the role of datacenter management solutions that automate cross-silo virtualization capabilities to lower virtualization TCO, increase infrastructure compliance, and deliver end-to-end service visibility across both physical and virtual infrastructures. SITUATION OVERVIEW Virtualization is being adopted by many different teams across IT organizations; server, storage, desktop, and application teams are adopting or often investigating the need to virtualize file, print, Internet, and (in the future) mission-critical applications and databases. There are many core reasons for this adoption, notably reducing and containing costs, reducing power costs, increasing server utilization, reducing time to execute tasks from months to weeks, and creating a more agile

infrastructure that responds to business requirements. With cross-silo hypervisor adoption, complexity increases. In fact, IDC's 2007 Management of Virtual Infrastructure multiclient study indicates that the majority of IT organizations (57%) will adopt multiple types of hypervisors over the next two years. As we have seen in the physical world, complexity increases management requirements. Figure 1 shows that management of virtual infrastructure is a growing challenge. FIGURE 1 The Management Problem Is About to Explode Q. In two years, what will be your most important IT challenge as it relates to virtualization? Management of virtual infrastructure Budget Business/IT alignment Business process impact Business resistance to using shared infrastructure Staff training IT organizational structure Other, please specify (% of respondents) n = 102 Source: IDC, 2007 Key Management Considerations The rapid adoption of virtualization as a production-level, datacenter architecture is pressuring IT organizations to adopt management solutions that manage both physical and virtual infrastructures. IT organizations should consider the following key management requirements that drive down costs and reduce the risk of failure for virtualization deployments: 2 # IDC

! Single management interface. Organizations should consider incorporating both physical and virtual server infrastructures into a single solution interface and also consider the broader implications as virtualization expands across desktop, storage, and application environments.! Functional evaluations. Organizations should consider the key functions for management, as well as the process standardization impact in areas such as ITIL v2 and v3.! IT service perspective. Organizations should determine VM-level management and the need to understand the dependencies of a group of VMs in relation to defining an IT service, and they should incorporate VMs into the asset repository.! Configuration management. Configuration management is a key function for ensuring compliance in virtualized infrastructure. VM configuration management should have integrations into CMDB deployments.! Heterogeneous hypervisor adoption. Deployments of XenSource, Microsoft, VMware, and other hypervisor technologies will happen; multiple technologies and OS flavors must be managed to increase the scalability and ensure the reliability of IT services that utilize the infrastructure.! Automation. Many of the same physical management challenges exist in virtual environments; examples include change, configuration, capacity planning, chargeback, problem, and performance management. Automation offers a seamless approach to linking management processes and tasks across physical and virtual infrastructures.! Application abstraction. Virtualization decouples the application from the hardware and OS; as such, several "layers" of abstraction require management and visibility to drive end-to-end service performance. Understanding the application layer and underlying supporting infrastructure is critical. IT organizations must consider the impact of VM sprawl as production usage of virtualization continues to accelerate and broaden across IT silos. IT has an opportunity to utilize automation technologies that drive tighter task automation across domains; for example, the ability to automatically isolate and identify server resources that should be virtualized. As such, automating a capacity planning process can assist server organizations in increasing utilization rates, reducing power consumption, and creating policy-based control over infrastructure. Automation offers teams a faster rate of return on virtualization by eliminating redundant tasks and creating an infrastructure that is driven by agreed-upon policies that trigger actions within virtual infrastructure. Another example is performance management, whereby IT organizations establish chargeback models driven by availability metrics in servicelevel agreements (SLAs). By determining these metrics up front in policies, IT can drive visibility for SLA assurance and meet changing business requirements. Automated management is a critical consideration for physical and virtual infrastructures; in fact, automating processes requires the need to become indifferent to the underlying infrastructure. Policies are only as effective as the processes they impact and the actions they trigger that deliver business impact. As cross-silo adoption of virtualization increases, IT organizations have the opportunity to drive 2008 IDC #

efficiencies across the spectrum, using an automation platform to accelerate the virtualization opportunity in cost reductions, increased availability, lower human error rates, and more agile infrastructure. Process integration is a key requirement in reducing costs and increasing service availability for IT organizations, spanning both physical and virtual infrastructures. Often, ITIL is the most frequently used process standard for virtual and physical processes. IDC research shows a continued acceleration of process adoption and an inclusion of these processes with virtual infrastructure (see Figure 2). FIGURE 2 ITIL Process Integration Q. In two years, do you envision integration of your virtual infrastructure into your: Change management process Configuration management process Problem management process Release management process Incident management process None selected Other (% of respondents) n = 102 Note: Multiple responses were allowed. Source: IDC, 2007 Embedded Software Trend It is important for IT organizations to recognize the key trend of embedded software. As pieces of the hypervisor become more embedded into servers, blades, storage, and client hardware, the opportunity for virtualization adoption increases. The future reality is that IT organizations could have a "wire once, virtualize anywhere" mentality that will require a comprehensive management competency to reduce risk, improve security, and manage performance. As more mission-critical services are deployed over using virtual machines, IT organizations will struggle with adopting "good enough, cheap enough" management solutions. IT organizations must recognize that both platform management, driven by hypervisor providers, and broader end-to-end management capabilities that support heterogeneous hypervisors will be required. 4 # IDC

IT Organizational Impact IDC has done extensive research on the impact of virtualization on IT organizational structure. With economic pressures building in North America, IDC expects to see this trend accelerate as CIOs look to become more operationally efficient by reducing IT silo driven barriers. Figure 3 shows how virtualization is impacting IT staffing structures for management tasks, in some cases triggering CIOs to develop a virtualization center of excellence team. FIGURE 3 IT Organizational Ownership Q. Within your IT organization, who will own the tasks of managing your virtualized infrastructure? Existing server OS team IT operations team Existing server hardware team A new "virtual computing team" that owns virtualization Other, please specify (% of respondents) n = 36 Source: IDC, 2007 Additional key considerations that impact IT organizational structure include:! Blurring IT staffing accountability. The dynamic nature of VMs, and the mobility they provide, forces IT staff to define the roles of various teams as they interact with each other via VM resource demands and management processes. Tasks (e.g., file-level recovery, backup, storage allocation, and business continuity) between server and storage teams are one example.! Location of functionality. Data is created throughout the VM life cycle, from preproduction and postproduction through retirement of the VM; management functions and role-based reports can deliver value for various constituents across IT teams.! Budget allocation. Ownership of the virtualization budget and resource dedication must be vetted, as VM-specific platform management and service management depend on each other IDC #

FUTURE OUTLOOK IT organizations must understand the need to manage at both the VM layer and the underlying hardware layer to deliver a service perspective. The dependencies between the layers will be increasingly important to deliver compliance and meet SLA objectives and business key performance indicators (KPIs). By utilizing HP Operations Orchestration, users can automate the workflows between the products to drive improved efficiency and respond to problems proactively, across physical and virtual infrastructures. This enables IT to scale faster and accelerate competitive advantage opportunities. Many IT organizations face critical future considerations when deploying virtualization and consolidating management capabilities. These considerations include:! Automation technology adoption. Identifying automation technology task opportunities and integrating them with a process standardization will help staff be more efficient and drive more policy-based management.! Integration of physical and virtual data. Bringing together data from across disparate parts of the virtual and physical infrastructures can improve the visibility and business benefit analysis from a service life-cycle perspective.! IT service view. Clustering and grouping VMs, understanding dependencies, CMDB inclusion, and expanding production usage of virtualization and emerging server architectures are driving the need for IT to deliver a service orientation that understands the supporting infrastructure.! New management benchmarks. IT organizations must better understand how they utilize and measure service delivery successes; benchmark analysis such as admin-to-vm ratios, availability, file recovery times, and reduced provisioning cycles are critical to measuring the success of IT service deployments.! IT as a profit center. The ability to measure and offer tiered services to business partners is a goal for IT; granular insights into data and the service delivery life cycle enable accurate and credible chargeback models to drive a profit center. CHALLENGES/OPPORTUNITIES HP Software challenges include:! The buildout of integrations across a large, growing product portfolio focused on enabling physical and virtual management for datacenters.!
