1 Hospitality Training Packet Reflecting God s Hospitality at VBC Introduction The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. 2 The Gospel: the great invitation into God s home by means of Jesus life, death, burial and resurrection. Our Great God: When we think of welcoming others & practicing hospitality, we should immediately think of God himself. God still longs to welcome people into his home with open arms. Reflecting God s Hospitality to All Our Understanding from Scripture: in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. (1 Tim. 3:15, ESV) Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. (1st Pet. 4:9, NLT) When God's people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. (Rom. 12:13, NLT) Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! (Heb. 13:12, NLT) Reaching Out to Church & Community What will you do to welcome your guests to an extraordinary experience? Inside your doors they will hear of the love of Christ. They will be invited to engage in life-changing relationships, particularly with a God who invites them to come home. What will you do to lay out the welcome mat as they enter your doors? 3 Hospitality Ministry Purpose Statement: The purpose of the VBC hospitality ministry is to reach out with a welcoming spirit and genuine servant s heart to each person on Sunday mornings from the time they walk in the door to the time they leave. The Face of the Church Valley Bible s Mission As we proclaim, we that are intimate with Christ, active in the church and loving the community. When guests encounter any individual on your guest services team, they encounter your church. We tell our team members, You are Granger Community Church. When you smile, our guests will leave thinking, What a pleasant church! When you wow people with your listening skills and service, they will know that this is a church that cares. You are the church. Of course, this is also true of negative experiences. If one greeter is indifferent, doesn t really listen, or doesn t follow through, the guest naturally assumes that the church is cold and uncaring [ ] you will have a brand that consistently honors the name of Christ, and this reputation will be confirmed every Monday morning. (Mark Waltz) Negative side: if you aren t on your game, that s the impression individuals will take away Positive side: if you are on your game, THAT S the impression individuals will take away! Grace side: God will work out his purposes regardless we can rest in him as we grow. 4

5 The worker s calling The for hospitality ministry A Unique Attitude & Mindset If you re wondering What attitude should I have while serving in Hospitality?! Just C.H.I.L. C: Explanation: a welcoming attitude that is apparent but ultimately seeks out what will be comfortable for the individual(s). Work towards being more expressive, clearly showing the other they are valued and can feel at home in our congregation. H: Explanation: no lack in diligence (Rom. 12:11) when it comes to hospitality ministry work! Demonstrating an inviting attitude, while meeting the needs of others requires a lowly and dedicated attitude. Give all that they can to their service. I: Explanation: characterized by an awareness of what s going on for the sake of service. Avoid being passive or lacking in drive and have mindful disposition. Actively look to meet the needs around us. L: Explanation: seek to genuinely care for the wellbeing a way that is evidenced in action. That means laying aside distractions as best as possible, including both those that are internal and external. 5
