6 Port of Charleston 14 miles south of the Cooper River Business Community via the Cooper River Port Expansion As of Q3 2015, the South Carolina Port Authority has completed the preliminary demolition, preparation, and containment wall construction for the new 280 AC terminal at the former Navy Yard. The first phase of construction will encompass 171 AC and is planned to open for the FY2019. Once completed, the full 280 AC terminal is projected to increase port capacity by 50%. A new 25 AC refrigerated container yard at Wando Welch Terminal is available for future development as needed. The terminal serves as the port s largest container facility and is vital to the port s economic productivity.
