2 ELEMENTARY DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT CLASS DESCRIPTION First Grade is a place that provides a positive and safe learning environment. It is a place where students are free to explore and discover new things. Students are engaged in learning about themselves and their relationships with their peers, school, family, and community. Students will be encouraged and challenged in each curriculum area to express their thoughts and ideas creatively to promote higher order thinking. Language Arts and Mathematics are the main focus in first grade. However, Science, Social Studies, Health Education, Physical Education, Art, and Technology are also a priority and are integrated throughout their learning to help develop a strong learning foundation. The goal in my class is for the students to learn how to be: A complex thinker and problem solver An effective communicator A cooperative group participant and leader A contributor to the community A quality worker and producer A self-directed learner GOALS AND OBJECTIVES We will be following the Utah Common Core curriculum for math and language arts, science and social studies. These curriculums outline standards of learning are essential for all students at each elementary grade level. The Core Curriculum for each grade level can be accessed through the Utah State Office of Education website at: Curriculum.aspx INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS - Language Arts standards are divided into: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Language. The reading program in ELP is based on a balanced literacy philosophy and includes instruction in phonics, literature, writing, and the use of reading strategies. I will use a combination of approved curriculum material such as Junior Great Books, McGraw Hill WONDERS, Jacob s ladder, and a unit from the College of William and Mary specifically designed for gifted children. Our Math program will be Houghton-Mifflin s MATH EXPRESSIONS. Our goal will be to help children value mathematics, become confident in their mathematical abilities, and become problem solvers. COURSE REQUIREMENTS GRADING Math- Grades for math will be based on unit pre and post assessments. They will also receive points based on math journals and finished class assignments. Language Arts Writing is based off the Developmental Writing Continuum. Students will receive writing rubrics that match the continuum to help determine their writing level. Reading is based off comprehension assessments and their reading level. Science & Social Studies Students will be graded based off of projects and any post assessments in a particular lesson. I do no give extra credit, however, depending on the assignment students will have opportunities to correct their work. I will accept redone work up until two weeks prior to when report cards are sent home. It is not required to redo assignments, but it may be beneficial to follow up and reinforce concepts. Report cards will be sent home after each trimester. First trimester ends November 18 th,
3 Second Trimester ends March 2 nd, and the last trimester ends June 2 nd. These are district wide report cards. ASSIGNMENTS & HOMEWORK- Reading every day will be the main portion of homework assignments. Students will start out the year with weekly reading responses that will need to be initialed and returned each Friday. As the year progresses students will move on to monthly projects and either receive a Reading Response Report or Research Writing Report that is finished and returned by the end of that month. Independent math work will be expected to be finished in class. However, as we get ready to take each unit test, I will evaluate what missing math assignments there are and at that time math work may need to be sent home at that time to be completed. For ideas at home, studies show that the best way to help promote independent inquiry and thinking is through games that have a math component. Students will need to be responsible about using their classroom time wisely and be expected to finish their work in class. Assignments sent home to be completed will depend on the student s needs. BEHAVIOR- Students are expected to be respectful to one another in the class, to be responsible, and to be happy! All students should feel safe and respected in my classroom. Hawthorne Elementary teaches the 8 keys of excellence in each classroom to promote this type of behavior. Students will learn how to have integrity, be flexible, and take advantage of opportunities to rise, and many other great qualities. Techniques such as consistent routines, warning of upcoming changes, specific directions, etc are used to help with smooth transitions, stopping misbehavior before it gets out of hand, and planning around specific interests so that students are engaged in activities. Our classroom will use a variety of techniques to help students be accountable for their behavior and to reward them for their choices. Consequences of misbehavior will include things like think sheets, time missed from rewarded activities, a note/call home. The school policy on any inappropriate behavior (such as punching, fighting, using inappropriate language for school) may lead to a discipline note and possibly in-school suspension and/or out-of-school suspension. OTHER CLASS INFORMATION CONFERENCES- Formal conferences are held twice a year to go over your child s progress. These conferences are called Student Education Plans (SEP) and they are scheduled for September 26 th 28 th and February 22 nd & 23 rd. Please watch for more information, as those dates get closer. In September, I will be able to share our beginning of the year assessment and together we will come up with goals for the following few months. In February we will establish new goals for the rest of the school year. I will be available 15 minutes before school and 15 minutes after each day. If you have questions or concerns where you feel to you need more time to discuss the situation please feel free to call and set up an appointment. SUPPLIES- Please provide a backpack or book bag for your child to bring to school each day. This will give you a better chance of receiving papers that are sent home. Keep in mind that lockers are shared and large bags or backpacks will not fit. I will provide each student with a pencils and other school supplies. Your child may bring a reading book and/or a notebook to keep in their desk to use during free time. **Please write your child s name or initials on his/her
4 bag and make sure it s big enough to fit a folder** BIRTHDAYS- Birthdays are always a special time for the student. We take time for the class to learn more about the student. The birthday student will have this time to bring items from home to share with the class (examples, favorite book to share/ read with class, pictures, favorite toy, etc). As a class we will ask questions to get know our fellow classmate better and sing and make cards. You are welcome but not obligated to send with your child a simple birthday treat or favor! (NEEDS to be store bought with label and NO treat with NUTS!) If the birthday falls during the school year, we will celebrate on the closes school day. If the birthday falls in summer, please check with me on a day to celebrate. To avoid hurt feelings please don t send birthday party invitations to school to be distributed unless the entire class is invited. CLOTHING- Please send your child dressed appropriately for the weather. Every child will go out to recess except during heavy snow or rain. Please don t send them in shoes that they can t run/play in, no spaghetti straps or flip-flops. In the classroom we will be doing many hands-on (potentially messy) activities. Please make sure that your child is dressed so that they can fully participate in all school activities. I will make every effort to keep them clean but it s amazing what can happen when least expected! SNACKS- Snacks are a great and quick part of our day. I would love to stock our snack shelves with SIMPLE, small, easy to distribute, healthy and ready to eat snacks. If you would like to DONATE snacks for our closet that would be GREAT! This system seems to work well and if everyone contributes, it doesn t put too much pressure on anyone. I will let you know when we are running low. General Rule, always plan on nut allergies so no snack with nuts. BOOK ORDERS- Book orders will be sent home in their folder monthly. Your orders benefit the class by earning points that we can use for classroom books. If you choose to place an order you can do so directly online using my classroom code NC9RR or send a check payable to scholastic books. I cannot accept cash for book orders. SHUTTERFLY- This is a share site through shutterfly that allows for better communication. I will frequently post classroom updates and reminders. All parents are members to the site and will be able to make comments, one another, post pictures and so forth. CO-OPING- Thank you in advance for all your time and support in the classroom. The effort and time that you provide in the classroom is an essential part of the success of the class and/or assignments at hand. Please do your best to be reliable, however, if there are times that you will not be able to make it into the classroom then please contact me. A lot of our greatest activities are made possible due to your assistance in the class. I m excited to work with each of you and to be a part of your children s lives. Thank You, Mrs. Torres
