1 Workshop Invita/on Moose Health Management challenges with growing ungulate popula/ons October 23-24, 2013, Uppsala, Sweden Center for Fish and Wildlife Research, SLU Swedish Center for Animal Welfare, SLU Na/onal Veterinary Ins/tute, SVA
2 Centrum för vilt- och fiskforskning Center for Fish and Wildlife Research (CFW) Moose Health: Management challenges with growing ungulate populations Synopsis Recovering wildlife populations provide novel challenges from a societal as well as scientific perspective. From a societal perspective there are benefits as well as costs, and to adopt we need to change the baseline of our perception as well as also our management approach. From a scientific perspective, the ecosystems are constantly evolving into new conditions to address and ponder, but also to consider in the light of previous results and experiences. In Sweden, the large ungulates populations have recovered since an all-time low at the midst of the 19 th century. The Swedish moose population peaked during the 1980ties with near 200 k shot annually, estimated at a total autumn population of more than half million specimens. The high densities of moose, the second largest terrestrial mammal in Europe, brought about problems to infrastructure and forestry, but also a tremendous source of high quality game meat, recreation and wildlife experiences. Today, the moose population of Scandinavia has stabilised at some 300 k specimens in autumn, about 80 k harvested annually in Sweden alone. Other ungulate populations, in particular redand fallow deer are still increasing in numbers. The wild boar locally occurs in high densities and creates obstacles to agriculture. The population of roe deer has retracted in the north and central parts, but still occur in high numbers in the south. In other parts of, particularly in eastern and central Europe, the moose population as well as most other ungulate populations are on the rise, putting management and societies to the test. In North America, the populations of white tailed deer are regionally dense and partially out of management control, and moose and other deer species are increasing. During the 1980 peak, the health of the Swedish moose population drew particular interest. Scabbard, meagre and suffering moose were frequently encountered by hunters and public alike, creating medial turmoil and a row of more or less speculative hypothesis over the underlying causes. Scientists were puzzled, pending between nutritional deficits, starvation, primary and secondary imposed diseases and illnesses. No uniform conclusions could be drawn however, and with decline of the populations, the problems diminished. Today, it seems the moose population in southern Sweden is facing similar problems. The signs are the same, but the prerequisites are different as compared to the 1980ties, and contributing explanations could be found in changes of climate, hunting practises, forestry, agriculture and other wildlife populations. Also the societal perspective of wildlife has changed, while the medial turmoil still seem to be a kin. As we believe that the challenges we are now facing in Sweden are universal in some way or the other, we call upon a workshop to address how to manage the health of our moose (and other Centrum för vilt- och fiskforskning, SLU tel: +46 (0) SE Umeå, Sweden carl-gustaf.thulin@slu.se Org.nr
3 Moose Health: Management challenges with growing ungulate populations ungulate) populations in a constantly changing world. Apart from issuing some key components to build future management and research strategies on, we intend this to be a first meeting on the general health of our wild resources, important for their sustainable management and use. The scientific journalist and writer Henrik Ekman will moderate the workshop. The workshop is open for invited guests, other interested are recommended to contact the organising committee.
