1 Modern Languages Self Assessment Questionnaire Guidelines: There is no time limit Please answer yes or no to the can do statements Please check your score and see the recommended course Topics may look similar but the level of depth vary depending on courses These questions give an idea of what will be included in each course level If still unsure, please talk to the tutor at first session who will arrange a transfer to another course if the level does not suit you Question No. 1 I can Yes No Say hello/goodbye, good morning/good evening, please/thank you/how are you? Say my name and ask someone s name, say how you are/pleased to meet you. 2 Order drinks and snacks in a café: name a few drinks and snacks, use key phrases to order a drink or snack in a café e.g. I would like a coffee/tea/beer/cheese sandwich, accept and refuse a drink. 3 Order food in a restaurant: recognise some authentic dishes of the country where the language is spoken, read a simple menu, order food and ask for the bill. 4 Count up to Shop using basic phrases: I would like a kilo of potatoes, 2 bananas, 100g strawberries; I can name a limited range of vegetables and other items such as bread, sugar, cheese. 6 I know the months of the year, days of the week, I can tell the time. 7 I can ask for a hotel room, say single or double, specify how many nights and for how many people, I know the alphabet and can spell my name and fill in a form. 8 Writing skills: write a short paragraph (2 or 3 lines) to present myself, fill in a form. 9 Reading skills: Recognise familiar words and key phrases. 10 Speaking and listening: Understand basic vocabulary or key phrases when someone speaks slowly and clearly and give a basic reply: e.g. recognise greeting and reply. 1
2 11 Greet at different times of the day, take leave appropriately, introduce myself and my family, say if I have any children and how many, say my nationality, what I do for a living (know a limited range of other jobs), know the vocabulary for marital status. 12 Name a few drinks, use key phrases to order a drink, accept or refuse a drink, read a very simple menu, order and say what I like and what I don t like (I don t like meat, I will take a fish dish), ask the waiter for the bill or say how much? 13 Shop for a limited range of fruits, vegetables and other items, ask how much something is, specify quantities, and know numbers to Book accommodation, say which type of room I want, for how long I want the room for and specify dates, simulate a situation where I book ahead by phone and spell my name. 15 Ask where something is, how far it is, ask for a specific place (name some places and shops e.g. chemist, theatre, swimming pool, baker) ask and understand basic directions. 16 Understand opening hours, make enquiries, check travel details (e.g. train), and tell the time (12 and 24 hour clock). 17 Reading skills: read and extract the main point from a simple text, comprehend familiar words and short sentences. 18 Listening skills: understand simple questions and give short answers when someone speaks slowly and clearly to me. 19 Write simple short sentences using learnt vocabulary. 20 Use basic grammar correctly (masculine, feminine, plural, singular, use the verbs to be and to have correctly, use some high frequency verbs in the present tense). 21 Introduce myself, family, pets and possessions (car, bike, house, flat, etc) give age, say my nationality and where I live, name a few other nationalities, indicate my marital status, can ask others to provide this information. 22 Describe people and things and use a limited range of adjectives e.g. say someone is tall, short, describe features such as hair and eye colour, say if something is ugly or pretty. 23 Book a table in advance, ask for a table on arrival, read the menu and recognise authentic dishes, express food preferences (simple use of like and dislike) ask for the bill and give compliments. 2
3 24 Book a hotel room or a B&B, Identify objects in a hotel room, book a room in advance, spell my name, use to communicate. 25 Find my way around, ask for direction, identify where something is from directions given. 26 Identify different types of weather, describe seasons using a limited range of vocabulary, understand main points when listening to the weather forecast (from teaching audio materials), and write a postcard. 27 Name various means of transport (bus, train, boat, and plane), buy tickets, obtain information about public transport, and understand time tables and frequency of travel, fares. 28 Shop in various shops (bakery, butcher, fruits and vegetables, etc) specify how much I need, ask for more or less, ask how much and pay (know numbers). 29 Writing skills; I can write short paragraph using continuous sentences, I know and can use high frequency verbs in present and past tense; I use negative and positive sentences correctly. 30 Use questions forms correctly (when/what/how/who etc), I can use singular, plural, feminine and masculine correctly. 31 Initiate social contact and handle small talk when people speak slowly and clearly to me. 32 Describe my daily routine using the appropriate verbs and vocabulary, I can use 12 and 24 hour clock for my activities, I can use adverbs of time (equivalent to sometimes, often, rarely in English), write a weekly plan of what I do. 33 Describe my home and its content (rooms, furniture, etc). 34 Name a range of sports and leisure activities, express my preferences and what I like to do, make sentences linking what I like to do to the weather (e.g. when it s sunny I garden but I prefer to read when it s raining). 35 Arrange a medical appointment, explain what s wrong and am familiar with a limited range of illnesses, medical instructions and medicines (e.g. have a rest, check temperature, take a spoon of syrup twice a day, etc). 36 Talk about myself and describe other people s lives. 37 Plan activities, accept or refuse invitations, make suggestions, talk about films and TV programmes. 3
4 38 Describe a lost property; recall the incident and the circumstances. 39 Recall past events (e.g. childhood memories) and make plans for the future using the correct verb tense. 40 Deal with a car breakdown in the taught language, deal with car rental, ask for help, and call emergency numbers. 41 Present myself and others/family giving details about jobs, nationalities, age and other relevant information and understand others when giving similar information (using continuous speech). 42 Describe where people live (house, flat, other type of habitation, etc) describe my town and its amenities, the country and its landmarks. 43 Deal with problems at a restaurant (e.g. poor service), make a complaint. 44 Shops for clothes bags and shoes from shops or catalogue/internet, name different, name different clothing for men, women and children, describe what a garment is made of (wool, polyester, etc, specify colours, prices, sizes, make comparisons (e.g. these trousers are cheaper that those ones ). 47 Deal with travel situations when in the countries where the language is spoken e.g. car rental, use various means of transport. 48 Give and understand directions by foot and by transport. 49 Understand what is said on a guided tour. 50 Know some typical dishes and know how they are made, know ingredients, can understand vocabulary in a recipe and know verbs relating to cooking and preparing food. 51 Read texts (various sources) understand the main points and write short paragraphs on particular topics using complex sentences and linking words. 52 Identify the main points when listening to short passages of speech. 53 Initiate social contact, talk in detail about myself and others, including my daily routine, job, family, spare time activities, etc. 54 4
5 Deal with everyday situations when travelling abroad, deal with situations that may arise in shops, offices, banks, cleaning services, repair services, other unpredictable situations). 55 Talk about type of jobs, roles and responsibilities. 56 Deal with different types of emergencies. 57 Express opinions, feelings and emotions, express preferences on a variety of subjects and justify my views (films, TV programmes, leisure activities, etc). 58 Familiar with commonly used verbs, regular and irregular in various tenses, aware that words do not always carry their literal meaning. 59 Read and write with reasonable command of grammar rules such as present, past and future tenses, use a variety of negative forms, extend and link to form a continuous text. 60 Listen to passages of speeches at normal speed and identify the main points and some details 61 Take part in unscripted dialogues and exchanges.
