3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Harmony School of Science established in 2006 is a Title I elementary school located in a North Austin Area of Austin, TX. The campus currently serves 550 students in grades K-5. However, HSS started as a K-5 school when it opened it is door to the North Austin Community in In 2008 school expanded its grade level and became K-8. In Harmony School of Science became again K-5 school transferring it is middle school students to Harmony Science Academy North Austin which is located at Pflugerville, TX. The student population is 20.9 % African-American, 22.9% Caucasian, 26.3% Asian, 29.7% Hispanic, 0.2% mixed race, 52% male and 48% female with 45.7% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. Over the last three years, there has been an increase of Hispanic students while our Asian populations have decreased. Due to changes in student demographics our campus hired more ESL certified teachers and offered more intensive training to its current staff. The staff population is 9% African-American, 63% Caucasian, 1% Asian, 25% Hispanic, 2% mixed race, 6% male and 94% female with an average of 3.6 years of experience. 100% of Highly Qualified teachers and 100% of Highly Qualified paraprofessionals.our campus offers Special Education, ESL, and GT programs to students that meet the criteria. Harmony School of Science serves 179 English Language Learner students, 47 Gifted and Talented students, 20 students in Special Education, 10 students in 504 program, and 5 students receive Dyslexia services. Harmony School of Science Austin is one of the two Harmony campuses to offer Coding classes to its entire 5th grade students. We have very small building with only 22 classrooms, we need bigger building to be able to add more seats in our school which has been a high demand from the community. Page 2

Vision Statement: The Vision of the Harmony School of Science-Austin is to enable students to succeed in school, in the workplace, and to provide options for students to enter math, science, and engineering careers. This will lead to students becoming productive and responsible citizens and even Nobel laureates. Mission Statement: Our Mission is to prepare each student for higher education through delivering a student-centered educational program with a strong emphasis on math, engineering, science, and technology in a safe, caring, and collaborative learning environment. Harmony School of Science-Austin's core values include: High Expectations, Dedicated Staff, Working Together, Character Matters, and STEM for All. Every student will learn and grow into a successful and productive citizen. We do whatever it takes to help our students reach their goals. Our students, parents, and staff work in harmony to create a strong community of success. We guide our students to value integrity, show respect, and be responsible. Every student will graduate with a strong understanding and appreciation of STEM and how it connects to the real world. Harmony School of Science embodies these beliefs by providing before and after school programs to our students which help them to foster a community of learning, programs include Coding, Robotics, and Lego. After school programs provide opportunity for students to practice their knowledge that they have learned in class. Page 3

6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. The pay at Harmony School of Science Austin increased by $5,000 during academic school year and then by another $4,000 in school year. Harmony also introduced it is reimbursement program during school year. With this program teachers without certification can apply for alternative certification programs and be paid by Harmony. Program also included Graduate program which school paid for its staff's entire masters tuition fee. In school year both Elementary and Jr.High students were announced champions in UIL Academics in District 27-AA Division. Again in school year our students got 1st place in 3rd Annual Austin District wide Robotics Tournament. In school year our students received "Inspirational Award" in Central Texas FIRST LEGO League. Over the next few years, we plan to expand our grade level to K-8 due to high demand from the community, if we are successful finding right building in the same neighborhood. Page 4

We are planning on bringing middle school back either to have all K-8 campus in the same building, if we can find larger building that can meet our needs such as more classrooms and resources or to have a separate building for middle school only with in close distance.
