Universal principles of a responsible feed
Focus in aquaculture feeds Alternatives to scarce raw materials Responsible managed raw materials Efficient food production Emerging environmental feed standard
Fish meal use in aquaculture AQUACULTURE - FISH MEAL USE ,813,000 mt Source: Tacon, 2010
Decreased dependency on fishmeal in many aquaculture diets Source: Skretting ARC Thanks to MicroBalance TM, salmon producers became net fish protein producers in 2010 Kg fish protein produced versus fish protein used in feed
Scarce raw materials fishmeal reduction 2012 Today we can formulate diets for salmonids with 5 10% of fish meal Our MicroBalance technology is now being tested in shrimp feeds
Raw material flexibility Protein raw materials Fish meal Krill meal Algal meal Soybean Sunflower Rapeseed Corn gluten Faba beans Lupins Pea meal Poultry meal Feather meal Blood meal Meat and Bone meal Microbial protein Insect meal Worm meal DDGS Fats Fish oil Krill oil Algal oil Rapeseed oil Soybean oil Sunflower oil Linseed oil Palm oil Camelina oil Poultry fat Lard Starch sources wheat Barley Sorghum Tapioca Potato starch Peas Faba beans

How to define a responsible feed? Both for industry and consumers it is a challenge to relate to knowing what is a responsible feed as part of the aquaculture production system beeing assessed
Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) «Feed dialogue» ASC today has the most comprehensive evaluation of responsible aquaculture feeds as part of their standards for a number of aquaculture species (tilapia, pangasisus, shrimp, trout and salmon) These standards has been developed in credible multi stakeholder processes Today the standard requirements for feed vary between species which can be confusing This year ASC will open up a transparent multi stakeholder process to define an environmentally responsible aquaculture feed This will be done trough harmonising the requirements in their different standards into one common feed standard This process will take about 2,5 years
Many wild fisheries are today luxury food
Affordable fish and seafood will in the future come from farmed origin Salmon, trout, tilapia, pangaisus, sea bass, sea bream, barramundi, halibut, shrimp..
