3 The New Public Health System Public Health England a national public health service A return of local public health leadership to Local Government Local authorities and their members know their residents their issues Professional leadership nationally and locally Dedicated resources for public health at national and local levels Focus on outcomes and evidence based practice supported by a strong information intelligence system Maintaining a strong relationship with the NHS, social care and civil society

5 Public Health England National 4 regions 15 centres All cover breadth of public health responsibilities and work with the local professional leaders the DsPH in local authorities

6 Public Health - Its about improving and protecting the public s health The science and art of promoting and protecting health and wellbeing, preventing ill-health and prolonging life through the organised efforts of society Health Improvement Inequalities, education, housing, employment, family/community, lifestyles, surveillance and monitoring of specific diseases and risk factors Health Protection Infectious diseases, chemicals and poisons, radiation, emergency response, environmental health hazards, Improving services Clinical effectiveness, efficiency, services planning, audit and evaluation, clinical governance (research), equity

7 Local Authority Responsibilities public health responsibilities Local Authorities have a duty (Health Social Care Act 2012) to take such steps as necessary to improve and protect the health of it s residents Specific responsibilities in legislation Professional leadership contracts transferred to local authorities
