2 Department Activities STAFF MEETINGS/ACTIVITIES: During the month of September Coolidge Police Department officers attended the Heartland Homeowner Association meeting at West School. Lt. Stinson attended the open house for the Pinal County Senior Citizen Center. He also the local Anti-Meth Coalition meeting. COPPER THEFT ISSUES: Chief Palmer met with the Pinal Copper Theft Committee to discuss the results of the new legislation and to plan for new legislative efforts in the upcoming session. Chief Palmer was invited to speak to the AgriBusiness Council meeting at the San Carlos Irrigation District Office regarding copper theft issues. Chief Palmer and Lt. Shepherd met with Steve Hendrix of Hendrix Scrap Metals and his attorney regarding enforcement efforts at their local salvage operation. POLICE HELP UPDATE SCHOOL EMERGENCY PLAN: SRO Mandi Childers and GREAT Officer Anthony Kelsh met with school district officials to update the Emergency Plan. GANG-RELATED ACTIVITIES: Chief Palmer and staff met with GIITEM on a number of occasions to plan gang-enforcement activities. PERSONNEL CHANGES: The police department continues its efforts of hiring police officers. The Sergeant promotional written exam was administered for four candidates on September 25. INVESTIGATIONS ACTIVITY: During the month of September the Coolidge Police Department Investigations Division assisted day shift with their work load and in responding to daily calls for service. There were 18 cases with evidence which were processed during the month of September. Investigations and the Pinal County Attorneys Office conducted a joint investigation recovering stolen property from a Coolidge resident, who was arrested for the possession of the property. Investigations also worked with patrol and responded to a burglary at the high school in which numerous keys were stolen from the office. This case is still under investigation. Sergeant Pacheco is currently working 10 cases, including one case of domestic violence involving a city employee who was charged and terminated from city employment. Detective Miller is currently working 15 investigations. He also was contacted by DPS and assisted in the investigation of possible elder abuse. This case turned out to be a civil matter. Detective Vance was assigned eight cases and currently has six cases assigned for the month of September. Page 2 of 18

3 Major Cases & Investigative Events COPPER WIRE THEFT: On September 1, unknown suspect(s) stole three 25- foot aluminum cables valued at $1200 from an irrigation pump located on the northwest corner of Bartlett and La Palma. No suspects or witnesses were located during the investigation. SUBJECT WITH A GUN: On the afternoon of September 12, officers responded to the Coolidge High School in reference to a subject with a gun. The call was received from a third party with a family tie to a high school security guard, who had called and told that third party that a student had a gun and the principals were doing nothing about it. This prompted the third party to call the Coolidge Police Department. Officers requested that the McCray, Hohokam and high school campuses be locked down. The lockdown affected over 800 students on the high school campus for approximately 45 minutes. When officers arrived, they observed a subject running from the school and across the football field and engaged in a foot chase. Officers located the subject at a home in the 600 block of N. 6th Place and placed him into investigative detention. Officers also located his shirt that contained ¼ ounce of powder cocaine and then arrested him. The gun situation was resolved when the investigation revealed that the security guard had reported that he only saw toy guns. The school administration was aware of the student possessing the toy guns and a search of the campus for those guns began. The student who possessed those guns was identified and it was discovered he had given the guns to another student who then passed them on to a third person. This third person was identified, but not located at the time of the search and it was evident that he was not on campus at the time of the lockdown. K9 SEARCH AT HIGH SCHOOL: On September 19, the school administration locked down the Coolidge High School to conduct a K9 search for drugs. With the help of Sgt. Palacios, a total of eleven K9 officers and participated. Officers found 1.9 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia belonging to a student, who was charged with possession of marijuana, possession for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia in a drug free school zone. PEDESTRIAN/VEHICLE COLLISION: On the night of September 20, officers responded to Central Avenue and 3rd Street in reference to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was not seriously injured and suffered only superficial abrasions and possible contusions to his right foot and ankle. The driver of the vehicle was arrested (following case investigation), for DUI and her vehicle was towed and impounded. She was later criminally cited and released. Page 3 of 18

4 BURGLARY OF COOLIDGE FIRE STATION #2: On September 24, the Coolidge Fire Department Station #2 reported a burglary, which was discovered after the City of Coolidge was conducting an inspection and located a sheet of tin on the northeast corner of the truck bay unscrewed and bent upward. Nothing in the bay was taken. Entry to the living quarters (mobile home) was made through a bedroom window on the east side of the house which is concealed by a brick wall. The window was pried and lifted open. A DVD player/recorder valued at approximately $ was the only item taken. The damage to the bay was estimated at approximately $ with a $ total loss. No suspect or leads were located and the investigation continues. ARSON INVESTIGATION: During the early morning hours of September 28, officers responded to a structure fire on the 300 block of West Hess Avenue. When officers arrived they found the home (vacant and under construction) fully engulfed in flames. Sgt. Walker and Chief McHugh investigated the incident, which is suspected to be arson. The investigation of the incident continues. BURGLARY SUSPECT APPREHENDED: During the early morning hours of September 28, Sgt. Peterson arrested a local man for burglary and possession of burglary tools. The Sgt. Peterson made contact with the suspect for a bicycle/traffic violation and during his investigation, found evidence that the suspect was involved in a burglary that occurred the previous day at the Golden Era Museum. The suspect is also a lead for an additional burglary earlier in September and investigation to that incident continues. He was charged for the burglary on September 27, along with possession of burglary tools and booked into the Pinal County Jail.
