7 Solar Heat Worldwide 55 countries included New countries: Morocco and Lebanon 4,2 billion people represent 95% of the solar thermal market worldwide

8 At the end of 2011 a total capacity of 245 GW th corresponding to 350 million square metres of collector area th were installed worldwide Based on data collected from detailed country reports, the jobs created by the production, installation and maintenance of solar heating and cooling plants is estimated to be375,000 worldwide

14 Solar Heating and Cooling roadmap Solar Heating and Cooling roadmap includes a growth path for solar thermal energy technology from today to 2050 and identifies technology, financing, policy and public engagement milestones that need to be achieved to realise the technology s full potential Australian support from Clean Energy Council, Australian Solar Institute and CSIRO Four workshops, over 100 participants - Paris (FR) - Kassel (DE) - Beijing (CN) - Sydney (AU)

15 Roadmap vision of solar heating and cooling by sector Solar heating and cooling capacity could produce annually by 2050: EJ solar heat (16% of TFE low temp. heat) EJ solar cooling (17% of TFE cooling)

16 Roadmap vision of solar hot water and space heating in buildings Solar hot water is the most important contributor in buildings, accounting for 25%, solar space heating 7% of total in 2050

17 Roadmap vision of solar process heat for low temp industrial heat Solar heating can contribute to 20% of total final energy for low temperature industrial process heat in 2050

19 Technology: low temperature heat Solar heat < 100 ⁰C: -Collector development: building-integrated collectors cost reducing materials (e.g. plastics) reduce installation costs - standardised kits -Large scale systems: pre-engineered solutions, smart energy grids integrating solar district heating and cooling networks and seasonal storage with electricity production (via heat pumps and CHP units)

20 Technology: medium temp. heat & hybrid solutions Solar heat (100⁰C < medium temp < 400⁰C): - Adaptation of concentrating solar technology for process heat applications - Development and standardisation of systems for solar heat in industrial processes Hybrid solutions: - Continued development of hybrid applications such as PV-T technology, solar systems incorporating heat pumps and solar systems incorporating biomass boilers

21 Technology: cooling & storage Solar heat for cooling: - Increase of thermal and electric COP, - Development of standardised systems - Development of small scale solar cooling - Development of integrated solar cooling and heating technology with compact heat storage Heat storage: - Continued development of experimental materials and research in new materials for compact thermal energy storage of medium temperatures, between 100 C and 300 C

25 Conclusions Global solar heat: 16.5 EJ in 2050 Global solar cooling: 1.5 EJ in /6 of total final energy for low temp. heat and cooling Potential for solar heat in building sector and in industrial (process heat) sector Crucial to address non-economic barriers: high up-front investment, information failures, split-incentives, quality assurance Need to transfer experience and knowledge to regions with good resource but less experience
