1 2011 Census Profile on the Town of Richmond Hill Every five years the Government of Canada through Statistics Canada undertakes a nationwide Census. The purpose of the Census is to collect quantitative statistical information on the country s population, which helps to provide a detailed snapshot of the demographic, social and economic conditions of the country. The Census achieves this by tracking trends related to the population, households, dwellings, families and language. Census data is important because it provides the information necessary to identify the emerging trends that shape Richmond Hill and guide the Town s plans. Prior to 2011, the Census was comprised of a mandatory short form sent to all households, and a mandatory long form questionnaire sent to a sample of households, in addition to a Census of Agriculture. As of 2011, the Census is made up of a 10-question mandatory form (known as the Census of Population), as well as the Census of Agriculture. The information that was previously collected through the long form Census is now collected on a voluntary basis as part of the National Household Survey (NHS). The NHS collects a range of demographic data on immigration, place of work, income, education and ethnicity. The NHS was sent to approximately 4.5 million households. Due to variations in data collection, as well as data reporting between the 2006 and the 2011 Census (as well as earlier Census periods) some of the datasets could not be compared between Census periods. Where there were inconsistences in data products and reporting between Census periods, only the 2011 Census data was analysed. The following is a summary of the demographic, social and economic profile of Richmond Hill as reported in the 2011 Census.

3 Population Richmond Hill s population increased by 22,837 people or by 14% between 2006 and Along with the population, the population density has increased between Census periods. 4 Age The Census provides a breakdown by 5-year age cohorts of the population. Richmond Hill s population pyramid is best described as an hourglass. Richmond Hill s largest age cohorts continue to be the baby boomer generations (ages 40-44; 45-49; and 50-54). After the baby boomer cohorts, the next largest cohorts are the teenaged and young adult age groups (ages 15 to 19; and 20 to 24). There are a greater proportion of females in comparison to males in all the 30 to 34 age cohorts and above. There are a greater proportion of males in comparison to females in all the 25 to 29 age cohorts and below.

5 Marital Status Legal Marital Status looks at the population aged 15 and older who are married, separated (still legally married), divorced, widowed, living common law and never legally married. In Richmond Hill, the proportion in every category of legal marital status aside from living common law has decreased between census periods. This may be attributed to the way that common law status has been measured between Census periods: in 2006, common law status was only looked at in terms of the total population, and in 2011 was treated as its own category. The majority of the Richmond Hill population over the age of 15 continues to be Married. The next largest grouping continues to be Never Legally Married. This could be attributed to the young age at which legal Marital Status begins to be measured. Marital Status of the Richmond Hill Population * This total does not take into account the residents living in common law relationships in the 2006 Census. **The total is based on the total number of residents aged 15 years or older who reported themselves as married, separated, divorced, widowed and never legally married. There are some discrepancies between this total and the Total Population Aged 15 Years and Older as reported by Statistics Canada. This is due to data standardization. 7 Households and Dwellings Households and Dwellings looks at a variety of characteristics related to structural types of dwellings, and household makeup. Single-detached dwellings continue to be the dominant structural dwelling type in Richmond Hill, and account for over 60% of the entire housing supply. While single family housing remains the dominant structural type, the proportion of this housing type has decreased between Census periods. Semi-detached units continue to form 4.1% of the housing supply. There has been an increase in the proportion of townhouses and apartments (including duplexes).

8 In terms of household makeup: There are 184,365 people who identified themselves as living in a private household. Of this total, 16,165 people (8.8%) did not belong to a census family household, and 168,200 people (91.2%) did belong to a census family household. 9 Of the 8.8% of the population not in census families but living in private households, over half of these respondents (50.2%) identified that they are living alone. Over 31% of these respondents identified themselves as living with relatives, but not as a Census family. Finally, 18.7% of these respondents identified that they were living with nonrelatives only. 11 Family Characteristics Family Characteristics looks at variables related to family composition. The total number of census families increased by 14.9% between census periods; which is close to the overall population growth rate (14%). The percentage of married-couple families had decreased between Census periods. The percentage of lone-parent families has increased, although the percentage of divorced individuals decreased during this period (re: Marital Status). The Average Number of Persons per Household has remained constant between Census periods at 3.2 persons per household. The 2011 Census altered the way in which language was measured over previous census years. In 2011, language was recorded as being either part of a Single or Multiple Response, meaning that whenever one language was identified as being a Mother Tongue Language, a Language Spoken Most Often at Home, or an Other Language Spoken Regularly at Home, it would be recorded as a Single Response. Whenever more than one language was identified as being a Mother Tongue Language, a Language Spoken Most Often at Home, or an Other Language Spoken Regularly at Home, it was recorded as a Multiple Response. English is considered the first language of nearly 93% of the population of Richmond Hill. There are at least 1.36% of the population that identified French, in addition to English, as their first language. 5% of the population does not identify either of the Official Languages as their first language.

An additional 7.7% of respondents identified that they have knowledge of both French and English. Together this means that 94.9% of Richmond Hill s population has some knowledge of the English language. There are 19 languages that at least 900 residents of Richmond Hill have identified as their mother tongue language. English is identified as the mother tongue language of 42.1% of Richmond Hill s population. After English, Cantonese (8.9%), Persian (8.8%) and Chinese (6.7%) have been identified as the next most prevalent mother tongue languages. Followed by Russian (5.4%), Mandarin (4.0%), Italian (4.0%), Korean (2.4%), Arabic (1.6%), and Spanish (1.2%). Other Languages make up the remaining 14.9% of the Mother Tongue Languages.

13 *Single Responses In terms of the Multiple Responses to Mother Tongue Languages, 86.5% of the population responded that English, in addition to another non-official language was their mother tongue language. A total of 5.9%, or 360 residents, identified English and French as their mother tongue language. A total of 3.4%, or 205 residents identified English, French and another non-official language as their mother tongue language.

Moreover, English in addition to another language is identified as the mother tongue language for 3.1% of the population. Therefore, English forms part of the identified mother tongue language of at least 43.8%, or 80,930 residents, of Richmond Hill. English is the only language spoken at home for 57.6% of the population, while another 7.8% speak English in addition to another language at home. English is not spoken at home for 34.6% of the population.
