1 Northwest Conference Sports Medicine Manual Introduction The Northwest Conference Sports Medicine Manual is intended for the use of administrators, coaches, athletic trainers, and support staff as NWC policy and procedure. It is a guide to administrative contacts, sports medicine contacts and available resources at each NWC institution. This manual contains information regarding: Medical Support Services for visiting teams routine treatment and Athletic Training Facility availability emergency and non-emergency acute care procedures NWC Conference Championship Medical Policies The following contact and medical facility information is included from each institution: Athletic Department/Institution Address Athletic Department Administrators Athletic Training Staff Team Physicians Athletic Training Facility location local non-emergency and emergency facilities local pharmacy. (PLEASE NOTE: The home phone numbers provided in this guide are for EMERGENCY USE ONLY. Any other use or distribution of this information is inappropriate.) Northwest Conference Sports Medicine Policies The following is a listing of the policies concerning medical support services contained in the Site Policies and Procedures of the Northwest Conference. SECTION 1 Organization and Administration 1.1 The chair shall be the Head Athletic Trainer from the institution whose Athletic Director chairs the board of athletic directors. 1.2 All Head Athletic Trainers, or designee, once per year, on the first or second Monday in May If warranted a conference call will be arranged following the regular season fall schedule. Pertinent issues regarding conference-wide standards of care will be discussed. 1.3 Student athlete welfare is a shared responsibility of the athletics department. Administrators, coaches and medical personnel should all have an understanding of appropriate emergency response procedures. Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques (CPR), first aid, and prevention of disease transmission (as outlined by OSHA guidelines) is required for a minimum of at least one coach present at all practices, skills instruction, and strength and conditioning. AED certification is recommended. 1.4 The NATA Code of Ethics and the Board of Certification (BOC) Standards of Practice shall govern the conduct of athletic training staffs.

2 SECTION 2- Medical Support Services to Be Provided 2.0 Competition/Event Staffing Requirements The following game coverage and supervision guidelines have been set forth according to recommended NCAA guidelines The host institution is responsible for providing a certified athletic trainer to be on site for the following intercollegiate sports: Football Men s and women s soccer Men s and women s cross country Women s volleyball Men s and women s basketball Baseball Softball Men s and women s track and field The host institution is responsible for providing a certified athletic trainer to be on call for the following sports: Men s and women s swimming Men s and women s tennis Men s and women s golf (adopted Fall 2005) Football Medical services provided by host institutions for football contests shall include on-site EMS transport, a Team Physician or designate, readily available equipment for transporting a student-athlete from the field of play and appropriate emergency equipment. 2.1 Institutions will be responsible for the care of the student-athletes of the visiting team. Arrangements should be made between certified athletic trainers at each institution regarding the nature of the visiting team s specific needs. This notification should be made at least 24 hours in advance of the event (football is excluded see 2.1.1) Institutions sponsoring football will be responsible for providing a certified athletic trainer for away contests. 2.2 Athletic Training Facility Access The host athletic training facility shall provide the following amenities: water (a minimum of 30 gallons/half for football games), bottles and/or cups, biohazard kit, injury ice and on the bench prior to the start of pre-game warm-ups and in the locker rooms when requested. In addition, a treatment table shall be provided on the sidelines for all football and soccer contests. 2.3 Pre-event Therapeutic Treatment A certified athletic trainer from the visiting institution shall contact the host athletic training staff prior to arrival to notify the host if a certified athletic trainer will NOT accompany the team and to discuss any special needs that can be identified at that time. If a visiting student-athlete requires treatment beyond what would be considered normal for the situation, e.g. modalities, manual therapy, etc., and if the visiting athletic trainer is not traveling with the team, then the visiting athletic trainer MUST send a written description of the treatment to be applied. A host athletic trainer will not be allowed

3 to administer any treatment of this nature except when they have communicated verbally with the visiting student-athlete s athletic trainer or in an emergency situation. 2.4 NWC Championships and Round-Robin Contests A certified athletic trainer shall be available plus additional athletic training staff as judged necessary by the host institution s certified athletic trainer for the particular event. Venue athletic training facilities and services shall be open and available to participants two hours prior to the start of competition at all championship events. 2.5 Emergency Equipment The host athletic training staff shall make available emergency medical equipment as required by event. All equipment that is borrowed must be returned at the earliest convenience upon returning home from the trip. 2.6 Emergency Assistance The host athletic training staff shall provide the visitors with pertinent information regarding medical facilities upon request. These numbers should be those that the home team would use in a similar situation. 2.7 Athletic Training Facilities The host will provide athletic training and treatment facilities appropriate for the specific event and competition. (See SECTION 3) 2.8 Supplies All teams that travel without a certified athletic trainer or athletic training student shall carry an appropriately stocked medical kit for use when attending away practices and competitions at NWC institutions. 2.9 Return to Play Decisions When a team is traveling without its own certified athletic trainer the host institution s certified athletic trainer is responsible for all return to play decisions for student-athletes injured during competition at NWC institutions. SECTION 3 Host Athletic Training Staff Professional Courtesy 3.0 Pre-event The host institution will extend the following professional courtesies to the visiting institution and its team: Communicate with visiting team certified athletic trainer or head coach in the event no sports medicine personnel are traveling with the team, and check on any preevent needs or special requests Provide access to venue athletic training facility prior to warm-up including access to modalities and adequate space for taping, stretching, etc Supply ice for injury care and an adequate supply of water prior to pre-game warmups before the scheduled event. Water should be supplied for visiting locker rooms/half time meeting locations upon request. 3.1 Acute Injury Care/Assistance If acute injury care or assistance is needed during the event, the host certified athletic trainer will be available to assist the visiting team personnel upon

In the case of a serious injury, the host athletic trainer will coordinate appropriate emergency care and/or activate the local EAP if necessary In the event a student-athlete is injured during practice or competition at a NWC institution, and a certified athletic trainer, the host certified athletic trainer shall contact the Head Athletic Trainer of the visiting institution within an appropriate amount of time and in a prudent manner. If the student-athlete is referred for medical treatment (Emergency Room, Urgent Care, etc.) the host certified athletic trainer will contact the Head Athletic Trainer as soon as reasonably possible. 3.2 Post-Event The host athletic trainer will check with the visiting team athletic trainer/athletic training student for any injuries or needs prior to departure following the event. SECTION 4 Visiting Athletic Training Staff Professional Courtesy 4.0 Pre-event The visiting athletic training staff will extend the following professional courtesy to the host institution s athletic training staff Teams requiring the assistance of the home athletic trainer should notify that institution's athletic trainer at least 24 hours in advance of the contest If for some reason you require some special medical care or equipment for any of your athletes, the visiting athletic trainer will call the host athletic trainer at least 24 hours in advance and inform him or her of the special needs Visiting teams are expected to supply their own taping supplies and medical kit. 4.1 During the event - The visiting athletic trainer will be responsible for requesting medical assistance from the host athletic trainer if needed. 4.2 Post-event - In the event a team physician is present at an event, the visiting athletic trainer will coordinate all injure athletes whom he or she believes should be seen by the physician after the event so medical evaluations can be made promptly and efficiently. SECTION 5 NWC Championship Events 5.0 Championship Event Coordination - The NWC Championship Event host institution's Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for coordinating all athletic training and emergency services on site for all NWC sports other than golf. The host athletic trainer may arrange for

5 his/her staff members to cover the event, or arrange for coverage by the participating institutions. SECTION 6 Miscellaneous 6.1 NCAA Sports Medicine - All NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook guidelines should be reviewed annually by NWC medical staffs, administrators and coaches. 6.2 Lightning Policy - The responsibility for the suspension of an intercollegiate athletic contest, due to the presence of lightning, is placed on the host certified athletic trainer in cooperation with the game administrator and officials. This decision will follow the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook unless a more stringent policy is mutually agreed upon.
