2 UCL DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION STUDIES LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER IN PUBLISHING Job description Main purpose of the job: To carry out high-quality research, teaching, public engagement and administration within the department, with a teaching focus on the MA in Publishing in the UCL Department of Information Studies, and a research focus ideally in one or more of the fields of copyright and intellectual property; publishing and book history; digital aspects of publishing; academic and/ or educational publishing; scholarly communication. An appreciation of interdisciplinary applications of these to other areas of research within the department is essential. Main duties and responsibilities: To carry out research, including writing publications, applying for external funding, and managing funded research projects in line with personal objectives agreed in the Staff Appraisal, Review and Development process. To teach, mainly, but not exclusively at graduate level, in relevant areas agreed with the Head of Department and reviewed from time to time by the Head of Department. To supervise or assist with supervision of the research of taught graduate (Master s) and/or research graduate (MPhil/PhD) students. To contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high quality curriculum. To assist in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance. To participate in the development, administration and marking of assessments. To provide pastoral care and support to students. To maintain their own continuing professional development. To participate in the administration of the department's programmes of study and other activities as requested. 2

3 To take part in public engagement and knowledge exchange activities, at a department, faculty or university level. To contribute to departmental, faculty, and/or UCL-wide working groups or committees as requested. To actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities. To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations. 4 UCL Department of Information Studies LECTURER/ SENIOR LECTURER IN PUBLISHING Person specification 1. Knowledge A broad knowledge of the publishing industry and its academic study, with knowledge of contemporary issues, especially digital trends and applications. Expert knowledge sufficient to undertake academic research and dissemination and advanced level teaching and doctoral supervision in one or more of the following areas: fields of copyright and intellectual property; publishing and book history; digital aspects of publishing; academic and/ or educational publishing; scholarly communication. Awareness of and interest in current developments in publishing in an international context. Knowledge and experience of the publishing industry, preferably gained from working in the field. 2. Skills and Abilities Ability to conduct high quality research which is reflected in the authorship of a number of high quality publications appropriate to the individual s career stage. Ability to supervise research-oriented academic work by undergraduate, Masters and doctoral students. Ability to teach at both undergraduate and graduate level and give other forms of public presentation. Ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to participate in the pastoral care of students. 4

5 Ability to carry out public engagement and knowledge transfer activities. Ability to write high quality research grant applications and take part in the management of funded research projects. 3. Qualifications PhD in a relevant subject, or close to completion. Teaching qualification and/or professional qualification in one of the areas with which the department is associated. 5. Previous Experience Active involvement in research at university level. Teaching or teaching support at university level in a relevant area. Management of funded research. Assessment of student work.
