1 ARCHERY STUDY GUIDE Canarelli Physical Education HISTORY Archery has a colorful image. First used as a means of survival before history was ever recorded, and now it has changed to an ultra modern sport. The invention of the bow and arrow was made by prehistoric man. This was a great cultural advance because it raised man above the beasts. Today archery is a sport that can be participated in many ways; hunting, hobbies, and is even an Olympic event. EQUIPMENT Arm Guard Finger tabs or Gloves Quiver Arrows Bow used to cover and protect the inner forearm. used to cover the three shooting fingers, used to hold arrows while you are shooting. a set of six used to propel the arrow towards the target. SCORING Single digits, odd numbers GOLD - Bull s Eye RED BLUE BLACK WHITE PETTICOAT REBOUND 9 points 7 points 5 points 3 points 1 point 0 points 7 points (must be witnessed) GOLD RED BLUE BLACK WHITE PARTS OF THE ARCHERY EQUIPMENT ARROW PETTICOAT BOW Nock Fletchings Hen feathers Back Bowstring Belly Arrow rest Crest Shaft Index feather (odd colored feather) Grip Serving area Pile Nock
2 THE SEVEN (7) STEPS OF SHOOTING Pre shooting preparation 1. Check the bow, arrows and string for damage. 2. Count arrows and examine markings to make sure you have the correct number of arrows (6), and that they are from your shooting station and the proper colored identification number. 1. STANCE 1. Feet are shoulder width apart and straddling the shooting line.bow side shoulder towards the target. 2. Your bow is in the hand that is closest to the target. 3. Arrow rest part of grip should be by the thumb and index finger. 4. Bow string is between arm and body 5. Weight is evenly distributed. 6. Every time you change your stance, you will shoot differently 2. NOCK 1. Raise bow to shoulder height (do not turn bow). 2. With non bow hand, pull an arrow from your quiver and hold behind you. 3. Take arrow around and over the top of bow and string. 4. Nock arrow to string - grooved end of nock goes into the string. Index feather (odd colored feather) up. 3. DRAW 1. Three (3) fingers behind you - no thumb, no pinkie (hook both of them together). 2. The tips of your three (3) fingers under the bow string. 3. Pinch arrow nock between the 1st and 2nd fingers - index finger above string, middle finger and third finger below string. 4. Turn bow from the horizontal to the vertical position (nocks of the bow are towards the sky and the ground). 5. Push bow hand towards the target until it is straight - important! Pull bow string, string arm elbow up (air out your armpit). 6. Pull the string straight back to the anchor point at the outside of your chin. 4 ANCHOR 1. Stay as still as possible during your anchor - HOLD and then aim. 2. Anchor point should be the same for every shot. 5. AIM 1. Look down the arrow shaft with only one (1) eye, your dominant eye. 2. Adjust your aim with the bow hand only. Look at one spot on the target. 6. RELEASE 1. Relax / extend fingers and allow the string to roll off smoothly. 2. Remember that you are releasing the string, not the the arrow. 7. FOLLOW THRU 1. Hold position of release until the arrow lands. Watch where the arrow strikes the target or lands. Adjust your aim with your bow hand on next shots to hit desired area of the target.
3 CARE OF THE EQUIPMENT 1. Always brace the bow correctly when stringing and unstringing. 2. Avoid dropping the bow or leaning on it. 3. Carry the bow by the handle, not the bow string. 4. Carry arrows at their pile ends between your fingers with the feathers separated. 5. To prevent tearing of the target face, place one hand against the face of the target when removing arrows. 6. Rotate arrows as you pull them out of the target. 7. Check all your equipment for any problems before you begin shooting. Report any problems to the teacher. SAFETY 1. Make sure you are using the proper weight bow and the correct arrow length. 2. Do not draw the bow without an arrow nocked in it. 3. Do not use damaged equipment. 4. Do not shoot until given the signal to do so. 5. Do not retrieve the arrows until given the signal to do so. 6. Never point an armed bow at another person. 7. Do not shoot if there is anyone at any target, behind any target or between the archer and the target. 8. When pulling arrows out of the target, make sure no one is behind you. 9. Etiquette (manners) in archery is a form of safety. Never do anything to disturb another archer - this includes talking. 10. When in doubt, DO NOT shoot! 11. Never shoot an arrow in the air. Shoot only at the target. ARCHERY TERMINOLOGY ADDRESSING THE TARGET Assume the stance prior to shooting an arrow. Feet should straddle the shooting line. Relax. ANCHOR POINT A definite spot on one s face to which the hand is brought on the draw. ARM GUARD A protective cover for the inner part of the bow arm. ARROW REST The upper part of the bow handle that forms a shelf for the arrow to rest on. BACK BELLY BOW The part of the bow away from the archer. The inside of the bow; the side facing the string. The piece of equipment used to launch the arrow. BOW ARM The arm that is extended in preparation for release.
4 BRACING To string the bow. To place the loops of the bow string into the bow nocks of the bow. BULLS-EYE Slang term for the center or gold area of the target. After the command is given by the teacher, archers may cross the shooting line and get all the arrows that they have shot. ROUND To shoot a definite number of arrows at specific distances.
